Chapter 5 - THE MESSAGE AT 1:07 A.M.

Khloe did not answer the unknown number.
She photographed the screen with Harrison's spare phone before waking him.
Within five minutes, the lights in his downstairs study were on.
Within ten, the three messages had been forwarded to a digital forensics consultant.
Harrison stood beside the window in gray sweatpants and a white shirt, looking less like the most feared attorney in Pennsylvania than a brother who had been dragged out of sleep by a threat against his sister.
That illusion lasted until he spoke.
"Do not block the number."
Khloe sat on the leather sofa with a blanket around her shoulders.
"I do not want to see another message."
"You do not have to read them."
"But if they keep sending, I want the evidence."
Khloe stared at the phone on the coffee table.
"Do you think it is Vanessa?"
"Maybe."
"Richard?"
"Possible."
"One of his people?"
"Also possible."
Harrison rubbed a hand over his jaw.
"What matters is that someone wants you frightened enough to make a mistake."
"I am already frightened."
"Then disappoint them by being frightened intelligently."
Khloe looked up at him.
That was such a Harrison sentence that she almost smiled.
Almost.
"What does frightened intelligently look like?"
"You sleep."
"You eat breakfast."
"You go to your appointment."
"You let me handle the people trying to manipulate you."
Khloe leaned back.
"You make that sound easy."
"It is not."
Harrison picked up the phone.
"It is simply necessary."
At eight the next morning, a courier delivered Richard's formal response to the divorce petition.
It was ninety-two pages long.
Khloe made it to page seven before her hands began trembling.
Richard denied the affair.
He denied hiding marital assets.
He denied forging signatures.
He claimed every transfer had been made for legitimate business purposes.
Then came the part Miranda had predicted.
Richard alleged that Khloe had become increasingly erratic during pregnancy.
He claimed she suffered "episodes of irrational suspicion."
He claimed she had become "obsessively focused on imagined infidelity."
He claimed she had threatened to destroy his company.
He claimed she had removed financial records from the home.
He claimed he feared she might leave Pennsylvania immediately after the baby was born.
And he requested an expedited hearing concerning temporary possession of the marital residence, preservation of company records, and future parenting arrangements.
Khloe lowered the pages.
"Imagined infidelity?"
Miranda sat across from her at Harrison's conference table.
"That is their position."
"I have photographs of them in bed."
"We have those photographs."
"I have two years of messages."
"We have those too."
"Then why would he deny it?"
Harrison answered from the head of the table.
"Because denial creates work."
Khloe frowned.
"What?"
"Every fact he forces us to prove costs time."
"Every delay increases pressure."
"Every accusation gives his public-relations team something to repeat while we are constrained by litigation."
Khloe stared at him.
"Public relations?"
Harrison slid his phone toward her.
A business news site had posted an article twenty minutes earlier.
HARRINGTON CEO FACES SUDDEN DIVORCE AMID CONCERNS FOR PREGNANT WIFE'S WELL-BEING.
Khloe felt heat flood her face.
She read the first paragraph.
Sources close to the Harrington family described Richard as devastated and deeply concerned for his wife's emotional health.
The article said there was no evidence of wrongdoing by Richard.
It said Khloe had recently made "unusual financial allegations."
It called the divorce "unexpected."
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"He leaked this."
"Someone did."
"That is lawyer language for yes."
"It is lawyer language for I cannot prove it yet."
Khloe pushed the phone away.
"I want to answer."
"No."
"Harry."
"No."
"He is telling people I am unstable."
"And if you respond emotionally, you help him."
Khloe stood.
"So I am supposed to sit quietly while he rewrites my life?"
Harrison's voice stayed calm.
"For seventy-two hours, yes."
"Why seventy-two?"
"Because that is when the emergency hearing is scheduled."
Miranda opened another folder.
"And because we are asking the judge to order preservation of electronic records, appoint a neutral forensic accountant, and prevent either side from using marital funds for public-relations attacks."
Khloe stopped pacing.
"Can a judge do that?"
"The court can restrict dissipation and litigation misconduct."
"Whether we get every item we ask for is another question."
Harrison leaned forward.
"But Richard just gave us a reason to ask."
At eleven, Khloe went to her obstetric appointment with Miranda rather than Richard.
Her blood pressure was higher than usual.
The baby's heartbeat was strong.
Her doctor, Dr. Leila Morgan, spent thirty minutes documenting Khloe's condition in exact language.
Alert.
Oriented.
Appropriate affect.
No evidence of confusion.
No report of self-harm.
No report of threats toward others.
No medical basis for psychiatric intervention.
Khloe hated that her prenatal visit had become part of a litigation record.
But she loved hearing her daughter's heart.
That sound gave her something Richard could not edit.
When the appointment ended, Dr. Morgan closed the chart.
"There is something I need to tell you."
Khloe's stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Your husband sent my office a letter yesterday."
Miranda looked up.
"A letter?"
Dr. Morgan nodded.
"He asked me to document that he had expressed concern about your mental state before the divorce filing."
Khloe's mouth fell open.
"He wanted you to create a record for him."
"That was my impression."
"What did you do?"
Dr. Morgan's expression hardened.
"I documented that he asked."
Miranda smiled for the first time all morning.
"Doctor, I may need a copy of that."
"With Khloe's authorization, you will have it."
Khloe signed before leaving.
Outside the medical building, a photographer was waiting.
Then another stepped from behind a parked car.
Then a third.
Cameras lifted.
"Khloe, are you receiving psychiatric treatment?"
"Khloe, did you accuse Richard of an affair?"
"Khloe, are you planning to leave the state with the baby?"
She stopped dead on the sidewalk.
Miranda moved closer.
"Keep walking."
Khloe heard shutters clicking around her.
"Khloe, is your brother using your divorce to attack Harrington Commercial?"
A microphone appeared near her shoulder.
"Do you deny being emotionally unstable?"
The question cut through everything.
Khloe turned her head.
For one dangerous second, she wanted to tell the reporter exactly what instability looked like.
It looked like a husband stealing millions while calling his pregnant wife irrational.
It looked like a mistress choosing nursery colors in the home she planned to buy out of foreclosure.
It looked like grief being turned into evidence.
Miranda touched Khloe's elbow.
Khloe kept walking.
She said nothing.
That afternoon, the unknown number texted again.
SMART GIRL.
Khloe showed Harrison.
His face changed.
"They were watching the medical office."
"Or the press coverage."
"Either way, this is not random."
The forensics consultant called an hour later.
The prepaid number had been activated three days earlier.
Payment came from a digital gift card purchased at a pharmacy in King of Prussia.
The pharmacy retained exterior security footage.
Harrison sent an investigator to preserve it before the system overwrote the recording.
By evening, they had a still image.
A woman in sunglasses buying the card.
Khloe stared at the photograph.
"That is not Vanessa."
"No."
"Do you know her?"
Khloe zoomed in.
The face was familiar.
Not from her home.
Not from Richard's office.
Then she remembered.
"She works for Vanessa."
Harrison looked at her.
"You are sure?"
"Her name is Brooke."
"She carried fabric samples into the house this morning."
Harrison's eyes went cold.
"Good."
Khloe looked at him.
"You keep saying that when terrible things happen."
"Because terrible people eventually make useful mistakes."
The next morning, Richard filed a supplemental declaration.
Attached to it was a security video from the Lower Merion estate.
The clip lasted forty-three seconds.
It showed Khloe in the kitchen six months earlier.
She was crying.
She picked up a ceramic mug.
She threw it against the wall.
The mug shattered.
The clip ended.
Richard's declaration described the event as an example of Khloe's "escalating volatility."
Khloe watched it once.
Then again.
Her entire body went numb.
"That was the day I miscarried."
No one in the conference room spoke.
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"He told me the doctor called while I was in the shower."
"He told me the pregnancy was over."
"I asked him to come home, and he said he had a board meeting."
"I threw the mug after he hung up."
Harrison's face had become frighteningly still.
"Was there more video?"
Khloe nodded slowly.
"The kitchen cameras record continuously."
Harrison turned to his associate.
"Preserve the entire day."
"Now."
Three hours later, they had the full recording.
It did not begin with Khloe throwing a mug.
It began with her sliding down the kitchen cabinets after Richard ended the call.
It showed her sitting on the floor for twenty-three minutes.
It showed her calling him back twice.
It showed her listening to a voicemail.
It showed her whispering, "Please come home."
Then it showed the mug.
And after the mug shattered, it showed Khloe crawling across the floor to pick up the pieces because she was terrified one of the dogs would cut a paw.
Harrison watched the full video once.
Then he looked at Miranda.
"File both versions."
Miranda nodded.
Khloe wiped her eyes.
"Will the judge understand?"
Harrison's answer was quiet.
"The judge will understand that Richard cut forty-three seconds out of nearly an hour."
"And that he chose the day you lost a child to do it."
Khloe looked down.
"He really hates me."
Harrison shook his head.
"No."
"He underestimated you."
"That is different."
At 6:20 that evening, the unknown number sent one final message.
YOUR BROTHER CAN'T SAVE YOU FROM WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE HEARING.
This time, Khloe did not feel frightened first.
She felt angry.
May you like
She handed the phone to Harrison.
"Make sure the judge sees that too."
