Chapter 2 - THE COMPANY SHE NEVER OWNED

Khloe read the message three times before the meaning settled into her bones.
The hallway seemed to tilt beneath her feet.
She moved into the guest bathroom, closed the door, and turned on the faucet before calling Harrison.
He answered before the first full ring.
"Tell me."
"Not while he can hear you."
Khloe lowered her voice.
"I am in the bathroom."
"Is the door locked?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Harrison paused.
"The company is called KHC Residential Partners."
Khloe frowned.
"KHC?"
"Khloe Harrington Cole."
Her stomach dropped.
"No."
"The incorporation filing uses your full legal name."
"The registered mailing address is a commercial mailbox in Wilmington."
"And the beneficial ownership certification lists you as the controlling member."
Khloe gripped the sink.
"I have never heard of it."
"I know."
"How much money?"
"That is the problem."
Harrison's voice became flatter.
"It is not where money went."
"It is where debt went."
Khloe stopped breathing for a second.
"How much?"
"At least eleven million dollars in guarantees and development obligations."
The faucet continued running.
Khloe watched water disappear down the drain while her own life seemed to follow it.
"Eleven million?"
"Some of those obligations may never be collectible against you if the signatures are forged."
"But we need to establish exactly how they were created."
Khloe looked at her reflection.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were swollen from crying in the nursery.
She barely recognized the woman staring back.
"Why would he put debt in my name?"
"To keep assets in his."
Harrison did not hesitate.
"Or to create leverage in a divorce."
"Maybe both."
A floorboard creaked outside the bathroom.
Khloe froze.
"Someone is outside."
Harrison went silent.
The doorknob moved once.
Then again.
"Khloe?"
Richard.
She disconnected the call and stared at the screen.
"One second."
"Are you okay?"
"Yes."
She flushed the toilet, dried her face, and opened the door.
Richard stood there holding a glass of water.
His expression was concerned.
Too concerned.
"You were in here a while."
"Pregnancy."
She gave him a tired smile.
"Everything takes a while now."
Richard laughed softly.
The sound made her skin crawl because it was the same laugh he had used in messages to Vanessa.
"Come downstairs when you are ready."
"I want to show you something."
Khloe followed him to the study.
Richard unlocked the door with a fingerprint scanner he had installed three months earlier.
He once said it was because confidential company files were kept inside.
Now Khloe wondered what else it protected.
A leather folder waited on the desk.
Richard gestured toward the chair across from him.
"Sit."
Khloe lowered herself carefully.
"What is this?"
"Estate planning."
Of course it was.
Her pulse started beating in her throat.
Richard opened the folder and slid a thick document across the desk.
"The baby changes things."
"Our trusts."
"Insurance."
"Liability."
"I have been meaning to clean up the structure for months."
Khloe looked at the first page.
POSTNUPTIAL ASSET CLARIFICATION AGREEMENT.
She almost admired the nerve.
"This is not estate planning."
Richard smiled patiently.
"It is part of it."
"It clarifies which assets belong to the company and which belong to us personally."
Khloe scanned the language.
She did not need Harrison's law degree to understand the broad intention.
Richard wanted her to acknowledge that several holdings acquired during their marriage were his separate business property.
He wanted her to assume responsibility for obligations associated with KHC Residential Partners.
The company she had learned about less than five minutes earlier.
Khloe felt cold all over.
"What is KHC Residential Partners?"
Richard's hand stopped moving.
Only for a fraction of a second.
Then he leaned back.
"A special-purpose vehicle."
"For what?"
"Residential acquisitions."
"Why does it have my initials?"
"Because it was intended as part of your portfolio."
Khloe forced herself not to look shocked.
"My portfolio?"
"You said you wanted to return to architecture someday."
Richard's voice turned warm.
"I thought you would appreciate having something of your own."
Khloe looked down at the page so he would not see the hatred rising in her eyes.
Something of your own.
Eleven million dollars of something.
"I do not remember signing anything for it."
Richard's smile thinned.
"You sign dozens of household and investment documents."
"You probably do not remember half of them."
The casual insult was almost perfect.
Not enough to sound openly cruel.
Just enough to suggest she was forgetful.
Unreliable.
Emotional.
Miranda had been right.
He was building a story around her.
Khloe placed the agreement back on the desk.
"I am too tired to read this tonight."
"You do not need to read every line."
"My counsel drafted it."
"Then your counsel can explain it to me tomorrow."
Richard's eyes sharpened.
"Why would you need separate counsel?"
Khloe smiled as gently as she could.
"Because it is a postnuptial agreement."
For the first time that night, Richard looked annoyed.
"Khloe, do not turn this into something dramatic."
There it was.
The word.
Dramatic.
One more brick for the wall he was building around her credibility.
"I am not."
"I am pregnant and tired."
"I will read it tomorrow."
Richard stared at her for several seconds.
Then he closed the folder.
"Fine."
"Tomorrow."
Khloe rose.
At the door, Richard spoke again.
"One more thing."
She turned.
"Vanessa is coming by in the morning."
Khloe's fingers curled around the doorframe.
"Why?"
"The company wants photographs of the finished nursery for a residential feature."
The lie was so shameless that Khloe nearly laughed.
The nursery was not finished.
Vanessa knew it.
Richard knew it.
And now Khloe understood exactly what this was.
A test.
"I do not want photographers in the nursery."
"No photographers yet."
Richard shrugged.
"Vanessa is just reviewing finishes."
Khloe kept her face still.
"I can choose finishes."
"Of course you can."
His smile returned.
"But Vanessa does this professionally."
Khloe left before the sentence could cut deeper.
At six thirty the next morning, she woke to the sound of voices downstairs.
Richard was already dressed.
Vanessa had arrived forty minutes early.
Khloe stood at the top of the stairs in a cream maternity sweater and watched the woman who had spent two years laughing at her walk through her home as if she belonged there.
Vanessa Kensington was even more striking in person than in photographs.
She wore a fitted camel coat over black trousers.
Her dark hair fell in polished waves over one shoulder.
She carried a leather sample case stamped with the Harrington Commercial logo.
Richard touched the small of her back when he thought no one was watching.
Khloe saw it.
Vanessa saw Khloe see it.
And smiled.
"Good morning."
Her voice was smooth.
"You must be exhausted."
Khloe descended the stairs slowly.
"I sleep well."
Vanessa's smile widened by a fraction.
"That is wonderful."
"Stress can be terrible this late in pregnancy."
Richard looked at Khloe.
"I told Vanessa you have had a difficult few weeks."
There it was again.
A difficult few weeks.
Khloe understood now that every sentence had an audience.
Every audience might become a witness.
"Richard worries too much."
Khloe placed one hand over his arm and smiled up at him.
"My doctor says I am doing beautifully."
For the first time, Vanessa's expression flickered.
Khloe almost enjoyed it.
They went upstairs together.
Vanessa walked into the nursery and looked around with the proprietary attention of someone inspecting a room she had already imagined owning.
She touched the cream wall.
"Too warm."
Khloe said nothing.
Vanessa lifted one of the dusty rose samples.
"Too predictable."
She looked at Richard.
"The penthouse palette was much stronger."
Silence dropped into the room.
Richard's face changed.
Vanessa had said too much.
Khloe kept her expression blank.
"What penthouse?"
Vanessa recovered quickly.
"A project downtown."
"I have too many rooms in my head."
Khloe nodded.
"I am sure you do."
Richard stepped between them.
"I have a call in ten minutes."
"Vanessa can finish this with you."
Khloe turned toward him.
"You are leaving us alone?"
"You two can manage colors without me."
He kissed Khloe's temple.
Vanessa watched.
Then Richard left.
The moment his footsteps disappeared down the hall, Vanessa's professional smile vanished.
She set the sample case on the floor.
"You look better than I expected."
Khloe's heart kicked hard.
"Expected after what?"
"Everything."
Vanessa walked toward the window.
"The treatments."
"The miscarriages."
"All that waiting."
Khloe's nails pressed into her palms.
Vanessa turned.
"Richard told me pregnancy had been hard on you."
"Richard tells you a lot."
Vanessa's eyes glittered.
"Yes."
The answer was deliberate.
A small cruelty placed neatly between them.
Khloe thought of Harrison.
Do not react.
She smiled.
"Then you know he hates sage green."
Vanessa's expression faltered.
"What?"
"You are here to discuss colors."
Khloe picked up a sample.
"So discuss colors."
For several seconds, Vanessa simply stared.
Then she laughed under her breath.
"You really have no idea, do you?"
Khloe's pulse hammered.
"About sage green?"
Vanessa walked closer.
"About your marriage."
Khloe lifted her chin.
"If you came into my home to insult me, you can leave."
Vanessa's gaze dropped to Khloe's stomach.
Something ugly passed across her face.
"Enjoy the room while it is yours."
Khloe went perfectly still.
Vanessa bent, picked up her case, and walked toward the door.
Then she stopped.
"Oh."
She glanced back.
"One piece of professional advice."
"Do not get too attached to the Lower Merion house."
"Richard has other plans for it."
She left before Khloe could answer.
Thirty seconds later, Khloe heard Richard's study door close downstairs.
She pulled out her phone and sent Harrison a single message.
SHE KNOWS ABOUT THE HOUSE.
His response came immediately.
I KNOW WHY.
Khloe stared at the screen.
May you like
A second message appeared.
THE HOUSE IS SCHEDULED FOR FORECLOSURE IN NINETEEN DAYS.
