Chapter 13 - WHEN KHLOE OPENED HER EYES

Khloe woke to a sound she could not place.

Soft beeping.

Air moving through a vent.

A cart rolling somewhere beyond a closed door.

For several seconds, she did not know where she was.

Then pain returned all at once.

Her ribs.

Her wrist.

Her back.

Her abdomen.

And beneath the pain, one enormous absence.

Her belly was flat.

Khloe's eyes flew open.

"The baby."

Her voice came out rough and barely audible.

A chair scraped beside the bed.

Harrison stood so quickly he knocked a paper cup onto the floor.

"Khloe."

She turned her head toward him.

His shirt was wrinkled.

His eyes were red.

There was gauze wrapped around both palms.

"The baby."

Khloe tried to sit up.

Pain tore through her side.

Harrison reached for her shoulder.

"Do not move."

"Where is she?"

"She is alive."

Khloe stopped fighting him.

The words seemed to reach her slowly.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"She is in neonatal monitoring."

"She needed help breathing at first, but she is breathing on her own now."

Khloe closed her eyes.

A sob escaped before she could stop it.

"Alive."

Harrison nodded.

"Alive."

Khloe covered her face with her uninjured hand.

She cried harder than she had cried after finding the affair.

Harder than after reading Phoenix.

Harder than when Richard took her father's drafting table.

Those losses had felt like pieces of a life breaking.

This felt like receiving the entire world back.

"Can I see her?"

"The nurse said as soon as you are stable enough to transfer."

"I am stable."

Harrison almost laughed.

"You have been awake for forty seconds."

"That is enough."

"Apparently not according to medicine."

Khloe opened her eyes.

"You look terrible."

"Thank you."

"Did you sleep?"

"No."

"Harry."

"Do not start."

Khloe tried to smile.

It hurt her ribs.

The memory came back in pieces.

The courthouse landing.

Vanessa's face.

Richard opening the door.

There is no baby, is there?

Hands.

Stone.

Falling.

Khloe's smile vanished.

"Vanessa."

Harrison's expression hardened.

"In custody."

"Richard?"

"Not in custody."

The distinction mattered.

Khloe looked at him.

"He saw."

"Yes."

"He did not move."

Harrison did not answer.

Khloe stared at the ceiling.

That hurt more than she expected.

After everything Richard had done, some instinctive part of her had still believed he would react if she were physically dying in front of him.

He had not.

"Was he shocked?"

Harrison's jaw tightened.

"Probably."

Khloe turned toward him.

"Do not protect me from the truth."

"I am not."

"Then tell me."

Harrison sat back down.

"He stood there."

"Courthouse security moved before he did."

"He left before police completed interviews."

"He later came here with lawyers."

Khloe's face went cold.

"Here?"

"Security did not let him onto the floor."

"He said the shove was an accident."

Khloe stared at Harrison.

"How would he know?"

"That is the question."

He told her about Brooke.

Vanessa's assistant had admitted buying the prepaid phone.

She admitted sending the anonymous messages.

She said Vanessa dictated them.

She said the goal was to frighten Khloe into withdrawing the financial allegations.

Then she said something worse.

On the morning of the sanctions hearing, Vanessa had learned Richard wanted a private conversation with Khloe.

Richard had told Vanessa that Khloe possessed evidence proving Vanessa had lied about her pregnancy.

Vanessa panicked.

She told Brooke she was going to the courthouse to "fix it before Khloe ruined everything."

Khloe listened without interrupting.

"Did Richard know she was going?"

"Brooke says yes."

"How?"

"Vanessa called him from the car."

"Brooke heard part of the conversation."

"Richard allegedly told Vanessa to keep you there until he could talk to you."

Khloe's skin went cold.

"Keep me there."

"Those are Brooke's words."

"We need the call records and the phones."

"Police are working on that."

Khloe looked at him.

"You already have the call records."

Harrison's mouth tightened slightly.

He had never been good at hiding investigative progress from her once she learned his habits.

"We have metadata from Richard's business phone."

"There was a call from Vanessa at 11:47."

"It lasted four minutes and twelve seconds."

"The shove happened at 12:17."

"Any text after?"

"Yes."

Khloe waited.

Harrison hesitated.

"Harry."

He took out his phone.

"At 12:04, Richard texted Vanessa."

"What did he say?"

Harrison read it exactly.

"Do not let her leave before I talk to her."

Khloe's pulse quickened.

"And Vanessa?"

"She replied, I will handle her."

The room seemed quieter.

Khloe looked away.

"He will say he meant talk."

"Yes."

"And that he never told Vanessa to touch me."

"Yes."

"Do you believe him?"

Harrison's answer took too long.

"I believe he knew she was angry."

"I believe he knew she had been threatening you."

"I believe he wanted her to prevent you from leaving."

"Whether he intended physical force is something evidence has to establish."

Khloe swallowed.

"That sounds like lawyer language again."

"It is."

"Because what I want to say as your brother would not help you."

A nurse entered before Khloe could answer.

She checked monitors, adjusted medication, and finally smiled.

"You have been asking about someone very loudly, I hear."

Khloe's heart jumped.

"Can I see her?"

"If your blood pressure stays where it is for another thirty minutes, we can take you down."

Khloe looked at the clock.

"Start counting."

The nurse laughed.

"Your brother said you might be difficult."

Khloe turned toward Harrison.

"Traitor."

"Accurate witness."

Thirty-four minutes later, Khloe was moved in a wheelchair to the neonatal unit.

Every turn in the hallway hurt.

She did not care.

The nurse wheeled her beside a clear bassinet surrounded by monitors.

Inside lay the smallest person Khloe had ever loved.

Dark hair.

Pink cheeks.

Tiny fists tucked near her face.

A sensor wrapped around one foot.

Khloe stopped breathing.

"Oh."

That was all she could say.

The nurse lowered one side of the bassinet.

"You can touch her."

Khloe slid one finger beneath the baby's palm.

The tiny hand closed around it.

Khloe started crying again.

Harrison turned away and pretended to study a monitor.

"Hi."

Khloe's voice shook.

"I am your mom."

The baby yawned.

Khloe laughed through tears.

"And apparently you have already learned how to ignore me."

Harrison looked over.

"Family trait."

Khloe stared at her daughter's face.

The name came to her with surprising certainty.

"Clara."

Harrison looked at her.

"Clara?"

"Clara Rose."

She had written the name on a list months earlier but never circled it.

Now it felt right.

Clear.

Strong.

Simple.

"Clara Rose Harrington."

The last name hurt for a second.

Then Khloe looked at the baby again.

A surname could not contaminate a child.

Clara belonged to herself.

Harrison touched Khloe's shoulder carefully.

"Clara Rose."

He nodded.

"I like it."

"You hate every name."

"I hated Paisley."

"You called it a fabric pattern."

"I was correct."

Khloe smiled.

For ten minutes, the world became small enough to survive.

Then two detectives arrived.

Khloe agreed to speak with them from her hospital room.

She described the confrontation in detail.

She described Vanessa grabbing her arm.

She described pulling free.

She described the shove.

She did not speculate about intent.

She did not exaggerate.

She did not need to.

The video existed.

The threats existed.

The messages existed.

The detectives told her Vanessa had been charged with serious assault offenses and would appear before a judge.

They explained that the exact charges could change as evidence developed.

Khloe asked one question.

"Will she be able to contact me?"

"No."

"There is an immediate no-contact condition."

Harrison had already filed for additional civil protection.

The detective looked at him.

"We know."

Harrison did not smile.

After they left, Khloe slept for three hours.

When she woke, Miranda was sitting beside Harrison.

Both looked grim.

Khloe knew immediately something had happened.

"What?"

Miranda handed her a copy of a filing.

Richard had petitioned for immediate access to Clara.

He asked the court to recognize him as the father and establish temporary parenting time as soon as the baby was medically cleared.

He accused Harrison of improperly excluding him from the hospital.

Khloe read the page once.

Then again.

Her hands began shaking.

"He filed this while I was unconscious?"

Miranda nodded.

"His lawyers filed it this morning."

Khloe looked at Harrison.

"He was standing beside the woman who pushed me."

"I know."

"He knew she was going to confront me."

"We know."

"He arranged a nurse to build a case against me after delivery."

"That is in our response."

Khloe stared at the filing.

Rage cleared the fog of medication from her mind.

"He does not get to walk into this hospital and hold my daughter like nothing happened."

Harrison's voice was steady.

"He will not."

"Can you promise that?"

Harrison did not make promises he could not legally keep.

"I can promise we will put every relevant fact before the judge."

Khloe hated the answer.

It was still the right one.

Then Miranda's phone buzzed.

She read the message.

Her expression changed.

"Police recovered Vanessa's phone."

Harrison looked at her.

"And?"

Miranda turned the screen toward them.

One deleted message had already been recovered from the device.

It was from Richard.
