Chapter 11 - THIRTY STEPS

Friday morning arrived cold and bright.

Khloe woke before six because her daughter was kicking hard enough to make sleep impossible.

Thirty-five weeks.

Her doctor had wanted her to avoid unnecessary stress.

Khloe almost laughed when she remembered that advice.

There had been nothing unnecessary about the stress in her life for months.

She dressed slowly in a navy maternity dress and a matching coat.

The color made her think of the suit Harrison wore to their father's funeral.

She almost changed.

Then she decided she was tired of letting bad memories own colors.

Harrison arrived at seven fifteen.

He looked at her once.

"You can still appear by video."

"Good morning to you too."

"I am serious."

"So am I."

Khloe picked up her bag.

"Dr. Morgan cleared me."

"With conditions."

"No prolonged standing."

"No walking long distances."

"Leave if I have contractions."

"I memorized the list."

Harrison looked down at her shoes.

"Those are not the flats I bought you."

Khloe stared at him.

"You bought me orthopedic shoes like I am eighty-seven."

"They have arch support."

"They have no dignity."

For one second, they both smiled.

The moment disappeared as quickly as it came.

Harrison opened the door.

"Stay beside me today."

"I always do."

"No."

He looked at her carefully.

"I mean physically beside me."

"Vanessa's assistant bought the anonymous phone."

"The messages threatened something after a hearing."

"We do not know if they meant this hearing, but I am not taking chances."

Khloe's hand moved to her belly.

"Security?"

"Two people."

"One inside."

"One outside."

"And courthouse security has the messages."

Khloe nodded.

They reached the Montgomery County Courthouse shortly before nine.

Reporters crowded the sidewalk.

The case had become public after lenders disclosed Harrington Commercial's financial review.

Richard's name was now connected to possible fraud investigations, although no criminal charges had been filed.

Cameras turned when Khloe stepped from the car.

Harrison moved beside her.

No one touched her.

No one got close.

Inside, Richard waited near the security checkpoint.

He was alone.

No Vanessa.

No lawyers within immediate reach.

For the first time in months, he looked tired.

His face was thinner.

There were shadows beneath his eyes.

Khloe hated that some buried part of her still noticed.

Richard stepped forward.

"Khloe."

Harrison moved between them.

"Counsel only."

Richard ignored him.

"I sent you an email."

Khloe looked at him.

"I received it."

"Then you know I need to talk to you."

"Through your lawyer."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"This is not about the divorce."

Harrison almost smiled.

"Everything you contact her about right now is about the divorce."

Richard's eyes never left Khloe.

"Vanessa lied to me."

Khloe's heart jumped.

Harrison's expression did not change.

Richard continued quickly.

"About things that matter."

"Things I did because I believed her."

Khloe heard Nolan's report in her head.

If he thinks the baby is his, he moves faster.

Richard knew.

Or suspected.

"Then tell your lawyer."

Khloe turned away.

Richard caught up with her after two steps.

He did not touch her.

"Khloe, please."

She stopped.

The word please sounded strange from him now.

"Did you know she was lying about the pregnancy?"

Richard's face went still.

That was answer enough.

Harrison looked at Khloe sharply.

They had agreed not to reveal what they knew.

It was too late.

Richard's voice dropped.

"How do you know about that?"

Khloe felt no triumph.

Only exhaustion.

"You should ask Vanessa."

Richard looked past her toward the courthouse entrance.

Vanessa had just arrived.

She saw all three of them together.

Then she saw Richard's face.

Her own expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Harrison touched Khloe's elbow.

"Courtroom."

They walked away.

Behind them, Richard said one word.

"Vanessa."

The way he said it told Khloe the lie between them had finally broken open.

The sanctions hearing lasted almost three hours.

Harrison began with the missing property.

Then the frozen-account transfers.

Then the mortgage diversion.

Then KHC Residential.

Then the postpartum plan.

Each exhibit tightened the room around Richard.

Douglas Vane fought hard.

He argued that Richard had relied on employees.

He argued that Vanessa's company handled legitimate consulting.

He argued that Phoenix was a contingency plan drafted by overzealous advisers.

Then Caleb Mercer's sworn statement appeared.

The room changed.

Caleb admitted creating financial structures at Richard's instruction.

He admitted knowing some signatures were unauthorized.

He admitted helping route funds through Vanessa's companies.

He admitted participating in Phoenix.

And he identified Richard as the person who approved the postpartum contingency.

Richard whispered furiously to Vane.

Vane's face went rigid.

Judge Calder read for nearly five minutes without speaking.

Then she looked at Richard.

"Mr. Harrington, did you disclose the Phoenix documents to your counsel before your prior declaration concerning your wife's mental condition?"

Vane stood.

"Your Honor, I would advise my client not to answer without considering privilege and potential exposure."

Judge Calder's gaze sharpened.

"That is a sensible instinct."

Richard looked furious.

Khloe sat perfectly still.

She could feel her daughter moving beneath the navy fabric.

A reminder.

This case was not the center of her life.

The baby was.

Judge Calder found Richard in violation of the property preservation order.

She ordered immediate turnover of additional devices and accounts to the neutral examiner.

She expanded the asset freeze.

She ordered Richard to reimburse certain forensic costs subject to final allocation.

She prohibited both parties from arranging medical personnel for the other without written consent.

She ordered future communications about Khloe's treatment to go through counsel except in genuine emergency.

Then she did something Richard clearly did not expect.

She referred the record concerning the disputed signatures and post-order transfers to the appropriate authorities for whatever review they considered proper.

Richard's face lost color.

Vane closed his eyes briefly.

Harrison simply wrote one line on his legal pad.

Khloe saw it.

NOW HE UNDERSTANDS.

The hearing ended at 12:08.

Richard's attorneys surrounded him immediately.

Vanessa was nowhere inside the courtroom because she had again been excluded as a potential witness.

Harrison gathered his files.

"We wait five minutes."

Khloe nodded.

A dull ache moved across her lower back.

She shifted in the chair.

Harrison noticed.

"Contraction?"

"No."

"Khloe."

"It is my back."

"I have been sitting for three hours."

"We are leaving."

"That was already the plan."

They waited until courthouse staff said the main corridor had cleared.

Harrison's outside security man called to confirm the vehicle was being brought around.

Khloe wanted air.

The building suddenly felt too warm.

They moved toward the front staircase.

Reporters had been pushed back behind barricades near the sidewalk.

Courthouse employees crossed the landing.

Attorneys moved in and out through the doors.

It was public.

Bright.

Crowded.

Safe enough to feel ordinary.

That was the mistake.

Halfway across the upper landing, Harrison's phone rang.

It was the neutral examiner.

He stepped three paces away, still within sight of Khloe.

Miranda had gone to retrieve a file from the clerk.

The security man outside was at the vehicle.

For less than thirty seconds, Khloe stood alone near the top of the marble staircase.

Vanessa appeared from the side corridor.

Khloe saw her too late.

"You."

Vanessa's face was pale and furious.

Khloe stepped back.

"Do not come near me."

Vanessa looked toward Harrison.

He was still on the phone but had turned at the sound of her voice.

"You told him."

Khloe's heart started pounding.

"Told who what?"

"Richard."

Vanessa moved closer.

"You told him I lied."

Khloe realized immediately what had happened downstairs.

Richard had confronted her.

"I did not tell him anything he could not discover himself."

Vanessa's eyes dropped to Khloe's stomach.

"You think you won."

"This is not a game."

"Do not give me that."

Vanessa's voice shook.

"You destroyed everything."

Khloe almost laughed.

"I destroyed everything?"

"You slept with my husband."

"You helped him hide money."

"You walked into my nursery and told me not to get attached to my own house."

"And now you are standing in a courthouse blaming me because your lies stopped working."

Vanessa stepped closer.

Khloe raised one hand.

"Leave me alone."

The words came quietly.

Exactly as they had in the nightmare version Khloe would later replay for months.

"Vanessa, leave me alone."

Harrison was already moving toward them.

"Khloe."

Vanessa heard him.

She looked over Khloe's shoulder.

Then back at Khloe.

Panic replaced rage.

"You are taking him from me."

"I do not want him."

"Liar."

"I filed for divorce."

"Because you knew he would come back when he found out."

Khloe stared at her.

"Found out what?"

Vanessa's mouth closed.

There it was.

The lie she had not meant to say aloud.

Khloe lowered her voice.

"There is no baby, is there?"

Vanessa's face twisted.

Behind her, the courthouse doors opened.

Richard stepped onto the landing.

He heard the last sentence.

His face changed.

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Richard."

Khloe took one step away.

Vanessa grabbed her forearm.

"Wait."

Khloe pulled free.

"Do not touch me."

Harrison shouted her name.

Vanessa's hands came up.

One second earlier, Khloe was standing near the top of the staircase, one hand protectively curved beneath her eight-month-pregnant belly.

The next second, Vanessa shoved her.

Hard.

Khloe's heel slipped off the edge of the first marble step.

Her balance vanished.

The sky and courthouse roof spun above her.

Her shoulder struck stone.

Then her back.

Then her hip.

She tried to curl around her belly.

She could not stop falling.

One step.

Another.

Another.

Someone screamed.

A folder burst open above her and papers scattered through the air.

Khloe felt a terrible impact near her ribs.

Then another.

Then nothing but movement and white marble and pain.

At the bottom, her body stopped.

For one impossible second, the entire courthouse seemed silent.

Then Harrison was there.

He dropped beside her so hard his palms split against the marble.

"Khloe."

His voice broke.

"Look at me."

She tried.

The ceiling above the entrance blurred.

Faces floated beyond it.

"Harry."

Her voice was barely sound.

Pain tightened around her abdomen.

Warm blood spread beneath her.

Harrison cupped her face.

"Stay with me."

"Do not close your eyes."

Khloe's fingers found his lapel.

"The baby."

She could not breathe properly.

"Please."

Her grip weakened.

"Save my baby."

Her hand slipped away.

Harrison looked up.

At the top of the staircase, Vanessa stood frozen with both hands still extended.

Beside her stood Richard.

He had not moved toward his wife.

He had not run down the stairs.

He had not even said her name.

Harrison's face changed.

Not into rage.

Into something colder.

Then courthouse security moved.

Two officers seized Vanessa.

Richard stepped back as if distance could erase the moment.

Paramedics rushed through the entrance.

Harrison looked down at Khloe again.

Her eyes were closed.

"No."

He pressed two fingers to her neck.

"Khloe."

The paramedic dropped beside him.

"Sir, move back."

Harrison did not move.

"Sir."

"She is thirty-five weeks pregnant."

"I know."

"We need space."

Harrison finally let go.

As they lifted Khloe onto the stretcher, he saw blood across the marble.

Too much blood.

Far too much.

One paramedic leaned over Khloe.

Another pressed a monitor against her abdomen.

His expression changed.

"Fetal heart rate is dropping."

Harrison stopped breathing.

The paramedic looked at his partner.

"Call ahead."

"Emergency obstetrics."

"We may be delivering immediately."

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Harrison climbed in without asking permission.

Behind them, Vanessa screamed Richard's name as officers led her back into the courthouse.

Richard did not answer her.

May you like

He stood on the top step staring down at his wife's blood.

For the first time, he looked like a man who finally understood that some decisions could not be moved offshore.
