Chapter 18 - VANESSA FINALLY TELLS THE TRUTH

Vanessa appeared on the deposition screen without makeup.
Khloe almost did not recognize her.
The polished designer who had walked through the Lower Merion nursery in a camel coat was gone.
The woman on the screen wore a plain navy blouse.
Her hair was pulled back.
Her face looked older.
None of that made Khloe feel sorry for her.
Vanessa's attorney began with the required formalities.
She swore to tell the truth.
Harrison sat at the conference table beside Miranda.
Khloe watched remotely from the townhouse.
Clara was upstairs with a nanny Harrison had hired after running a background check extensive enough to qualify the woman for national security clearance.
Khloe had mocked him for it.
Then she had read Phoenix again and thanked him.
Harrison began questioning Vanessa.
His voice was calm.
"Ms. Kensington, when did your relationship with Richard Harrington become romantic?"
Vanessa gave a date.
Nearly two years before Khloe discovered the messages.
"Did you know he was married?"
"Yes."
"Did you know his wife was undergoing fertility treatment?"
Vanessa's eyes dropped.
"Yes."
"Did you discuss Mrs. Harrington's miscarriages with him?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"Yes."
Khloe's fingers tightened around the edge of the table in front of her.
Harrison did not look toward the camera.
"Did you make jokes about those miscarriages?"
Vanessa's face flushed.
"Yes."
"Why?"
A long silence.
"Because I was cruel."
The answer was almost identical to Richard's.
Khloe felt nothing.
Harrison continued.
"Did you believe Mrs. Harrington deserved that cruelty?"
"No."
"Did you stop?"
"No."
"Why not?"
Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.
"Because I hated her."
Khloe leaned closer to the screen.
At least that answer was honest.
Harrison's voice remained flat.
"Why?"
"Because she had everything I wanted."
"Richard."
"The house."
"The name."
"The family respect."
"She walked into rooms and people treated her like she belonged there."
Vanessa looked toward the camera without quite meeting Khloe's eyes.
"I spent years trying to become indispensable to Richard."
"She already mattered just by existing."
Khloe almost laughed at the insanity of it.
Vanessa had envied a marriage that was quietly eating Khloe alive.
"Did you tell Richard you were pregnant?"
"Yes."
"Were you pregnant?"
"No."
"Had you been pregnant by him at any point?"
"No."
"Why did you lie?"
Vanessa repeated the story.
Richard kept delaying.
He kept saying the divorce had to be timed around financing.
He kept saying Khloe was too fragile after the miscarriages.
He kept saying the company could not absorb scandal.
Vanessa decided a pregnancy would force him to choose.
"And did it?"
Harrison asked.
"Yes."
"He accelerated Phoenix."
"He started moving more money."
"He promised the house."
"He told me I would be his wife before my supposed due date."
Harrison slid an exhibit into the record.
The altered ultrasound.
"Where did this image come from?"
"My cousin had an old teaching image."
"Did she know you intended to present it as your own pregnancy?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"Not at first."
"At first?"
"She knew later."
Harrison did not react.
"Did Alison Reed also know she was being selected for Mrs. Harrington's postpartum care because of her relationship to you?"
"Yes."
Khloe's stomach tightened.
"Whose idea was it to hire Alison?"
Vanessa looked down.
"Richard's."
"Explain."
"He said Khloe might try to take the baby and disappear."
"He wanted someone in the house after delivery who would tell him what Khloe was doing."
"He wanted notes."
"What kind of notes?"
"Whether she was sleeping."
"Whether she cried."
"Whether she took medication."
"Whether she refused help."
"Whether she said anything angry about Richard."
Khloe felt sick.
Harrison's voice sharpened slightly.
"Did he say why he wanted those observations?"
Vanessa nodded.
"He said if Khloe became a problem in the parenting case, he needed a record that started before she had time to build her own story."
Silence filled every location connected to the call.
Khloe looked at the baby monitor beside her laptop.
Clara slept upstairs.
Safe.
Unobserved by anyone Richard had selected.
Harrison moved to finances.
Vanessa admitted that Archwell received money it had not earned.
She admitted issuing invoices for services never performed.
She admitted creating VK Residential to acquire the Lower Merion house after foreclosure.
"Did you understand that Mrs. Harrington did not know about that plan?"
"Yes."
"Did you understand the house was marital property?"
"Yes."
"Did you understand Richard was intentionally allowing the mortgage to become delinquent?"
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"Yes."
"Why did you participate?"
"Because he told me the house was basically his anyway."
Harrison's expression did not change.
"And you accepted that?"
"I wanted the house."
Simple.
Ugly.
True.
Khloe appreciated the answer more than another excuse.
Then Harrison moved to the threats.
"Did you instruct Brooke Ellis to purchase a prepaid phone?"
"Yes."
"Did you dictate messages sent to Mrs. Harrington?"
"Yes."
"Including the message stating that Harrison Cole could not save her from what happened after the hearing?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"What did you mean?"
"I wanted her scared."
"Of what?"
"Losing the case."
Harrison waited.
Vanessa shifted.
"Losing Richard."
"She had already filed for divorce."
"I know that now."
"You knew it then."
Vanessa's face tightened.
"I thought she was trying to destroy him so he would go back to her."
Khloe nearly spoke to the screen.
Harrison continued before she could.
"Did you intend physical harm when you sent the message?"
"No."
"Did you intend physical harm when you went to the courthouse on the day Mrs. Harrington fell?"
Vanessa started crying.
Not dramatically.
Tears simply appeared and ran down her face.
Khloe watched without sympathy.
"No."
"Why did you go?"
"Richard told me Khloe knew the pregnancy was fake."
"I knew he was angry."
"I thought if Khloe showed him the messages, he would leave me."
"Had he already confronted you?"
"Yes."
"And what did he say?"
Vanessa wiped her cheek.
"He said I had destroyed everything."
"He said he would talk to Khloe and find out how much she knew."
"I told him not to."
"He told me to make sure she stayed until he got there."
Harrison placed the recovered texts on screen.
"Did you interpret make sure she doesn't walk away again as permission to use force?"
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
"No."
"Then why did you grab Mrs. Harrington?"
"She was leaving."
"Why did you shove her?"
Vanessa's breathing changed.
"I lost control."
"That is a conclusion."
"Describe what you did."
Vanessa stared at the table.
"She pulled her arm away from me."
"I thought she was going to walk straight to Richard."
"I put both hands on her shoulders."
"And?"
Vanessa's voice broke.
"I pushed her."
Khloe stopped breathing.
She had seen the video.
She had told detectives what happened.
She knew.
Still, hearing Vanessa say the words felt like a door closing.
"How hard?"
Harrison asked.
"Hard."
"Did you see she was beside the staircase?"
Vanessa cried harder.
"Yes."
"Did you know she was thirty-five weeks pregnant?"
"Yes."
"After you pushed her, did you try to catch her?"
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"No."
"Did you call for help before others did?"
"No."
"Did you go down the stairs to assist her?"
"No."
Harrison let the silence remain.
Khloe looked at Vanessa's face.
There was no explanation big enough.
No hidden fact.
No secret command that took control of Vanessa's body.
She had been angry.
She had used both hands.
She had pushed.
That was all.
Harrison continued.
"Did Richard tell you to push Mrs. Harrington?"
"No."
Khloe's eyes narrowed.
Vanessa looked up.
"He did not tell me to hurt her."
"He told me to stop her from leaving."
"He knew I was furious."
"He knew I had threatened her before."
"But he did not say push her."
The distinction mattered legally.
It did not make Richard innocent of everything else.
Harrison moved on.
"Before the shove, did Richard ever discuss obtaining primary custody of Clara after birth?"
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"That once the baby was born, Khloe would have less leverage."
Khloe's hands went cold.
"Explain."
"He said while Khloe was pregnant, every aggressive legal move made him look cruel."
"He said after delivery, it would become a parenting case instead of a pregnancy story."
"He said if there was enough medical documentation, he could get temporary custody and force Khloe to negotiate."
Harrison's jaw tightened.
"Negotiate what?"
"The money."
Khloe closed her eyes.
There it was.
The final shape of Phoenix.
Clara had never been the prize.
She had been leverage.
Richard planned to use his own daughter to control the property settlement.
Khloe opened her eyes again.
Whatever grief remained for the man she married hardened into certainty.
Harrison moved to the draft affidavit blaming Vanessa and Caleb.
"Had you seen this before your attorney produced it?"
"No."
"When did you first learn Richard had prepared to blame you for the unauthorized transfers?"
"After his arrest."
"How did that affect your decision to cooperate?"
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
"I realized Khloe was not special."
Everyone went silent.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"That came out wrong."
Khloe spoke for the first time.
"No."
Her voice came through the conference room speakers.
Vanessa froze.
Khloe continued.
"I know what you mean."
Harrison looked toward the camera but did not interrupt.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
"He was going to use you too."
Khloe said it without comfort.
"Yes."
Vanessa's voice was small.
"He was."
Khloe leaned closer.
"That does not make us the same."
"I know."
"You helped him hurt me."
"I know."
"You threatened me."
"Yes."
"You tried to take my home."
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"Yes."
"You mocked my dead babies."
Vanessa looked down.
"Yes."
Khloe's voice shook now.
"And you put both hands on me while my daughter was inside my body and shoved me toward thirty marble steps."
Vanessa began to cry again.
"I am sorry."
Khloe stared at her.
For months, part of her had imagined what she would say if Vanessa apologized.
She had imagined fury.
She had imagined screaming.
She had imagined a perfect sentence sharp enough to make Vanessa feel every injury at once.
The real answer came quietly.
"I believe you are sorry now."
Vanessa looked up.
"But being sorry after consequences arrive is not the same as choosing not to hurt someone when you still think you can get away with it."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Khloe continued.
"I do not forgive you."
"Maybe someday I will stop caring whether I do."
"But I will not carry your guilt for you."
She muted her microphone.
Harrison ended questioning twenty minutes later.
After the deposition, he called Khloe.
"Are you okay?"
Khloe looked toward the staircase of the townhouse.
Her own staircase.
Only twelve steps.
Carpeted.
Still difficult for her injured hip.
"Yes."
This time she meant it.
"Did it help?"
Khloe considered the question.
"She did not have an explanation."
"No."
"That helped."
Harrison was quiet.
Then he said, "Her lawyer says she intends to enter guilty pleas on the assault case and cooperate in the financial investigation."
Khloe looked at the baby monitor.
Clara stirred.
"Good."
Harrison almost laughed.
"Now you are saying it."
Khloe smiled faintly.
"Terrible people make useful mistakes."
"I taught you too well."
"Apparently."
A month later, prosecutors filed a broader set of financial charges against Richard based on bank records, forged authorizations, hidden transfers, and evidence recovered from his document case.
His attorneys began negotiating.
The Harrington Commercial board completed its internal review and permanently removed him.
Several disputed construction liabilities were shifted back to the entities that actually incurred them.
KHC Residential was frozen and placed under court supervision.
For the first time, the eleven million dollars that once sat beside Khloe's name began disappearing from her life.
Then Miranda called with the date Khloe had been waiting for.
The final divorce and property hearing had been set.
Khloe looked down at her healed wrist.
Then at the cane she no longer needed most days.
"Where?"
Miranda told her.
Montgomery County Courthouse.
May you like
The same building.
The same marble staircase.
