CHAPTER 9: THE TRUTH ADRIAN WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER

The video ended.

But nobody inside the Vale mansion moved.

The final message remained frozen on the screen.

YOUR SON KNOWS WHY YOUR FIRST WIFE DISAPPEARED.

Dominic stared at those words.

Every instinct inside him screamed that something was wrong.

Not because Adrian was lying.

Not because Nathan had manipulated him.

But because there was one terrifying possibility Dominic had not considered.

Adrian might actually remember.

A twelve-year-old memory.

A moment from the night everything changed.

A moment someone had spent years trying to erase.

Dominic slowly lowered the tablet.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

Elena recognized that expression immediately.

She had seen it before.

Not when Dominic was angry.

But when Dominic had already decided what he was going to do.

“Dominic.”

She whispered.

“Do not go after Nathan like this.”

He looked at her.

“Like what?”

“Like a man trying to punish someone.”

A pause.

“Go as a father.”

Those words stopped him.

Because she was right.

For years, Dominic had survived by becoming colder.

More calculated.

More dangerous.

But Adrian did not need a weapon.

He needed a father.

Dominic looked toward Daniel.

“Trace the video.”

Daniel immediately began working.

“Already started.”

“How long?”

“Not long.”

Dominic nodded.

Then his eyes moved toward the staircase.

Toward the room where Harper was sleeping.

Toward the room where Mia was recovering.

Everything Nathan had touched.

Everything Nathan had damaged.

Everything Nathan had stolen.

Dominic had spent years building an empire.

But tonight, he realized something.

An empire could be rebuilt.

A family could not.

Thirty minutes later.

Daniel returned.

His expression was serious.

“Found it.”

Dominic turned.

“Where?”

“An abandoned property outside the city.”

“Owned by who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Dominic noticed.

“Say it.”

Daniel placed a file on the table.

“Your father.”

The room became silent.

Again.

Dominic looked at the document.

The property.

The address.

The ownership records.

Everything connected back to the Vale family.

“How?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“Your father purchased it fifteen years ago.”

“Before his death.”

“Why would he buy a place like this?”

Daniel shook his head.

“We do not know.”

Dominic looked at Elena.

She already looked afraid.

“You know something.”

Elena remained silent.

“Tell me.”

She took a slow breath.

“That place…”

She whispered.

“That was where your father hid things.”

“What things?”

“Things he could not trust anyone with.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“Not even me?”

Elena looked at him.

“Especially not you.”

The words hurt.

But Dominic did not look away.

“Why?”

“Because your father believed the person closest to you would use your emotions against you.”

Dominic immediately thought of Nathan.

The man who had always been closest.

The man who knew exactly how to manipulate him.

The abandoned property sat deep inside the forest.

Far away from roads.

Far away from cameras.

Far away from anyone who might accidentally discover it.

Dominic’s convoy stopped fifty yards away.

The building looked empty.

Old.

Forgotten.

But Dominic knew better.

Nothing connected to his father was ever forgotten.

Not really.

Marcus checked the area.

“Clear.”

Dominic stepped forward.

Daniel followed.

Elena stayed behind.

Dominic noticed.

“You are coming.”

She looked at him.

“Dominic…”

“You ran once.”

A pause.

“You disappeared once.”

His voice softened.

“I am not losing you again.”

For a moment.

Elena looked like she wanted to say something.

But she simply nodded.

They entered the building.

Inside was darkness.

Dust.

Old furniture.

Nothing that looked important.

Until Dominic noticed something.

A family portrait on the wall.

His father.

His mother.

Himself as a child.

But someone had scratched another person out.

A young boy.

Dominic walked closer.

“Who is that?”

Elena stopped behind him.

Her face changed.

“That was Nathan.”

Dominic stared.

A childhood picture.

Nathan.

Standing beside him.

A boy he had known since childhood.

Not seventeen years.

Longer.

Dominic turned.

“What are you saying?”

Elena looked at the portrait.

“Nathan did not enter your life seventeen years ago.”

“He entered it much earlier.”

Dominic felt cold.

“How?”

“Because your father brought him here.”

“Why?”

Elena whispered:

“Because Nathan was the missing child.”

Dominic froze.

“What?”

“Your father discovered Nathan as a child.”

“He was abandoned.”

“He had no family.”

“So my father adopted him?”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“He wanted to.”

“But your grandfather refused.”

“Why?”

“Because Nathan was connected to a secret your family buried.”

Dominic stared.

“What secret?”

Before Elena answered.

A sound came from the next room.

A young voice.

“Mom?”

Dominic turned instantly.

Adrian.

He ran toward the sound.

The door opened.

And there he was.

His son.

Standing in front of him.

Alive.

Older than Dominic imagined.

Different than the baby in the photograph.

But real.

For several seconds.

Father and son simply stared.

Neither knew what to say.

Dominic had prepared for enemies.

For betrayal.

For war.

But not this.

Not meeting his son for the first time.

Adrian looked at him carefully.

“You’re Dominic Vale.”

Dominic nodded.

“Yes.”

The boy swallowed.

“Nathan said you were dangerous.”

The words hurt.

But Dominic stayed calm.

“What do you believe?”

Adrian looked away.

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“I remember my mother.”

Dominic froze.

Elena stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

The boy looked at her.

His eyes immediately filled.

“Mom?”

Elena covered her mouth.

Tears appeared.

“My baby.”

Adrian stared.

Like he was looking at a ghost.

“I thought you were gone.”

“I know.”

Elena moved toward him.

But Adrian stopped.

Not because he did not love her.

Because he was confused.

Twelve years of lies could not disappear in one moment.

Then a sound echoed outside.

A car door.

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked through the window.

His face changed.

“Dominic.”

“What?”

“Nathan is here.”

Dominic immediately looked outside.

Nathan stood in the rain.

Alone.

No guards.

No weapon visible.

Just Nathan.

The man who had stolen twelve years.

The man who raised Dominic’s son.

Nathan looked directly at the building.

Then shouted:

“Dominic!”

Everyone froze.

Because Nathan’s next words changed everything.

“I know you hate me.”

A pause.

“But before you decide what I deserve…”

“Ask your son what he saw the night Elena disappeared.”

Adrian’s face went pale.

Dominic slowly turned toward him.

The boy looked terrified.

Because he remembered.

He remembered something.

Something nobody wanted him to say.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Adrian.”

His voice softened.

“What happened that night?”

The boy looked at his mother.

Then at Nathan outside.

Then back at Dominic.

His voice trembled.

“Dad…”

A pause.

“I saw who tried to kill you.”

The room went silent.

Dominic felt his heart stop.

“Who?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

And whispered:

“It was not Nathan.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian opened his eyes.

May you like

“It was someone from your family.”
