CHAPTER 12: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE FIRST SECRET

Dominic Vale stared at the photograph on his phone.

For several seconds.

He convinced himself it was impossible.

Because the human mind always searched for an explanation before accepting something that shattered reality.

A reflection.

A mistake.

A fake image.

Anything.

Anything except the truth.

But the longer he looked.

The harder it became to deny.

The woman standing beside his father was real.

Her face was clear.

Her expression was familiar.

And Dominic knew that face.

Not because he had met her.

But because he had seen it in old family records.

In photographs hidden away.

In documents his father never wanted anyone to discover.

His grandmother.

Margaret Vale.

The woman everyone believed died before Dominic was born.

The woman who was supposed to be a closed chapter of Vale family history.

But there she was.

Standing beside his father.

Alive.

Dominic slowly lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone in the room watched him.

Because they could see the change in his expression.

The same expression that appeared when Dominic discovered a betrayal.

A person could lie.

A document could be forged.

But Dominic knew one thing.

Someone had just opened a door that had been locked for decades.

“Who sent this?”

Daniel asked.

Dominic did not answer immediately.

He looked toward Elena.

“Did you know?”

Elena stared at the picture.

Her face became pale.

“No.”

Dominic studied her.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“I swear.”

The answer sounded genuine.

And that frightened Dominic more.

Because if Elena did not know.

If Nathan did not know.

If Claire did not know.

Then there was another person controlling the information.

Another person moving pieces.

“Grandmother died before I was born.”

Dominic said.

Nathan slowly looked at the photograph.

“No.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“You know something.”

Nathan looked exhausted.

“I knew there were rumors.”

“Rumors about what?”

Nathan hesitated.

“That Margaret Vale did not die.”

The room became silent.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Nathan looked down.

“Your grandfather announced her death publicly.”

“But some people inside the family believed it was a lie.”

“Why?”

“Because after her funeral…”

“She continued sending letters.”

Dominic felt a cold sensation.

“Letters to who?”

Nathan looked at him.

“Your father.”

The old family archives were opened again.

For the second time that night.

The room where Dominic had spent years believing he knew everything about his family became a place full of ghosts.

Daniel placed several old boxes on the table.

“These were hidden behind the original wall panel.”

Dominic looked at the boxes.

“Who found them?”

Daniel glanced at Nathan.

“Nathan knew they existed.”

Dominic looked at him.

Again.

Another secret.

Nathan did not defend himself.

“I was trying to protect what was inside.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“And instead?”

Nathan looked away.

“I protected the wrong things.”

Dominic opened the first box.

Inside were letters.

Hundreds of them.

All addressed to his father.

He picked up the first one.

The handwriting was elegant.

Old-fashioned.

The letter began:

My son,

Dominic stopped.

Because the words felt too personal.

He continued reading.

If you are reading this, then I failed to return before the truth became dangerous.

His fingers tightened.

The next line:

The family you built is not the family you believe it is.

Dominic looked at everyone.

Then continued.

Your father before you created a system where loyalty mattered more than blood.

That system destroyed us.

A pause.

Then:

There are children of this family who were erased because they were inconvenient.

Dominic immediately thought of Lucas.

Nathan.

Adrian.

Harper.

The pattern was becoming clear.

The Vale family had spent generations hiding people.

Erasing people.

Protecting an image.

At the cost of their own blood.

Daniel opened another document.

“Boss.”

Dominic looked up.

“What?”

Daniel pointed.

“This is a family registry.”

Dominic took it.

The list was old.

Names.

Dates.

Relationships.

Then he saw something.

A name crossed out.

A name deliberately removed.

Alexander Vale.

Dominic froze.

Alexander was not a hidden outsider.

He was not an enemy who appeared later.

He was part of the family.

But underneath Alexander’s name was another note.

A note written by Dominic’s grandfather.

Denied inheritance.

Dominic looked at Nathan.

“Why?”

Nathan answered quietly.

“Because Alexander was not removed because he was weak.”

“He was removed because he was dangerous.”

At that moment.

A loud sound came from outside.

Security alarms.

Everyone turned.

Marcus immediately grabbed his radio.

“Movement at the north entrance.”

Dominic stood.

“Who?”

The guard answered:

“One vehicle.”

“Unknown driver.”

Dominic moved toward the security screen.

The camera showed a black car stopping outside the mansion.

The door opened.

An elderly woman stepped out.

Everyone froze.

Because the security cameras clearly showed her face.

The same face from the photograph.

Margaret Vale.

Alive.

Dominic walked closer to the monitor.

His heart was beating faster.

A woman who had been dead for decades was standing outside his home.

Waiting.

The guards opened the entrance.

But before anyone reached the door.

Margaret’s voice came through the intercom.

“Dominic.”

Everyone looked at him.

She continued:

“I know you have questions.”

A pause.

“But before you judge Alexander…”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Before I judge him?”

Margaret continued.

“You need to know what your father did.”

The words made everyone silent.

Margaret looked directly into the camera.

“Your father did not hide the truth from Alexander.”

“He hid it from you.”

Dominic stepped toward the screen.

“What truth?”

The elderly woman looked sad.

“The truth about the night Elena disappeared.”

Elena immediately looked up.

Margaret continued.

“The truth about your son.”

“And the truth about why Nathan really saved your life.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

Because even after everything.

Even after all the secrets.

One question remained.

Why did Nathan save him?

Why save the man he was supposedly sent to destroy?

Margaret slowly raised an old envelope.

“I have the answer.”

The camera zoomed closer.

The envelope had one name written on it.

DOMINIC VALE.

Then Margaret said:

“But once you read this…”

“You will never see your father the same way again.”

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

And Dominic realized something terrifying.

For years, he believed he was searching for the person who betrayed him.

But maybe…

He had been searching for the person who betrayed everyone.

May you like

Including himself.
