CHAPTER 14: THE UNCLE WHO RETURNED FROM THE GRAVE

The doors of the Vale mansion opened slowly.
A cold wind entered the grand hallway.
Rainwater followed behind the people standing at the entrance.
But nobody inside the mansion looked at the weather.
Nobody cared about the storm outside.
Because the real storm had already entered.
Alexander Vale stood in the center of the doorway.
Calm.
Confident.
Almost relaxed.
The same man who had spent years appearing at family events.
The same man who shook Dominic’s hand in front of cameras.
The same man who publicly called Dominic “the future of the Vale name.”
But tonight, he was no longer pretending.
Behind him stood a man older than the photographs.
A man Dominic had only known through stories.
A man whose existence had been erased from family history.
His uncle.
Victor Vale.
The man who was supposed to have died thirty years ago.
Nobody spoke.
Not even the guards.
Because everyone understood something.
The past had not returned.
The past had been waiting.
Dominic stepped forward.
His eyes never left Victor.
“You are dead.”
Victor smiled slightly.
“That is what they wanted everyone to believe.”
Dominic’s expression remained cold.
“Who are you?”
Victor laughed quietly.
“Your uncle.”
“No.”
Dominic shook his head.
“My uncle died before I was old enough to remember him.”
Victor looked around the mansion.
“Your family has always been good at making people disappear.”
The words struck the room.
Because everyone knew they were true.
The Vale family had spent generations hiding problems.
Removing names.
Changing stories.
Protecting their image.
Victor stepped inside.
Alexander followed.
Nathan immediately moved closer to Dominic.
A protective instinct.
A habit built over years.
Victor noticed.
“How touching.”
He smiled.
“The lost son protecting the chosen heir.”
Nathan’s face changed.
Dominic noticed.
“What does that mean?”
Victor looked at Nathan.
“You never told him?”
Silence.
Dominic turned toward Nathan.
Again.
Another secret.
Nathan closed his eyes.
“Not yet.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“I am done hearing that phrase.”
“Not yet.”
“Someday.”
“When the time is right.”
He stepped closer.
“My entire life has been decided by people who thought they knew what was best for me.”
His voice lowered.
“I decide now.”
Nathan looked at him.
And for the first time, he did not argue.
He simply nodded.
“You’re right.”
The admission surprised everyone.
Nathan continued.
“I should have told you everything.”
Dominic looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You should have.”
They moved into the library.
The same room where the family secrets had been uncovered.
Now the entire truth was preparing to surface.
Victor sat across from Dominic.
Alexander stood beside him.
Like an adviser.
Like a shadow.
Like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
“You want answers.”
Victor said.
Dominic stared.
“I want the truth.”
Victor smiled.
“Good.”
“Because your family has survived on lies for too long.”
Dominic leaned forward.
“Start talking.”
Victor looked toward the old family portraits.
“When your grandfather built the Vale empire, he made one mistake.”
“What?”
“He believed only one child deserved power.”
Dominic remained silent.
Victor continued.
“Your father was the chosen son.”
“I was the forgotten one.”
“Everything went to him.”
“The company.”
“The respect.”
“The family name.”
“And I was told to be grateful.”
Dominic studied him.
“So this is revenge?”
Victor smiled.
“No.”
“Revenge is emotional.”
“What I wanted was correction.”
“Correction?”
Victor nodded.
“The Vale empire was never supposed to belong to one person.”
“It belonged to all of us.”
Dominic shook his head.
“You destroyed innocent people because you felt ignored?”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Innocent?”
“You think your father was innocent?”
“You think the man who erased his own family deserves sympathy?”
Dominic felt anger rising.
“What did my father do?”
Victor looked at him.
“He chose you.”
The answer confused Dominic.
“What?”
Victor continued.
“He chose you over everyone.”
“He built the future around you.”
“He protected you.”
“And he abandoned me.”
Dominic remained silent.
Because underneath Victor’s anger was something familiar.
Pain.
A wound that had been open for decades.
But pain did not excuse everything.
“How does Alexander fit into this?”
Victor looked toward him.
Alexander stepped forward.
“I helped him.”
Dominic looked at Alexander.
“You manipulated Claire.”
“Yes.”
“You used Nathan.”
“No.”
Alexander smiled.
“That was the interesting part.”
“Nathan was never truly mine.”
Everyone looked at Nathan.
Alexander continued.
“He was supposed to be.”
“When he was young, Victor brought him into the plan.”
Nathan looked away.
Dominic understood.
“So Nathan was trained to destroy me.”
“Yes.”
Alexander said.
“But he failed.”
“Why?”
Alexander looked at Nathan.
“Because he became attached.”
Nathan said nothing.
Dominic looked at him.
“You cared about me.”
Nathan slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
“Even when you were supposed to hate me.”
“Yes.”
The room became quiet.
Then Dominic looked back at Victor.
“What about Elena?”
Victor’s expression changed.
Finally.
A crack.
“Elena was never part of the plan.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
“She discovered too much.”
“What?”
“She found the documents your father hid.”
“The documents that proved the original Vale inheritance.”
Dominic frowned.
“What documents?”
Victor smiled.
“The documents that prove you are not the rightful owner of the empire.”
Everyone froze.
Dominic stared.
“What?”
Victor leaned forward.
“Your father changed the inheritance.”
“He removed himself.”
“He removed you.”
“He created a new structure.”
Dominic felt the room tilt.
“Why?”
Victor answered:
“Because your father knew the Vale family was destroying itself.”
“So he chose someone else.”
“Who?”
Victor looked at Harper.
Then Adrian.
Then Dominic.
“The next generation.”
Silence.
Victor continued.
“The empire was never meant to belong to Dominic Vale.”
“It was meant to belong to the children.”
Adrian looked confused.
Harper held Mia’s hand.
Dominic stared.
Everything suddenly connected.
The hidden children.
The erased names.
The documents.
The secrets.
His father was not protecting an empire.
He was trying to end the cycle.
Then Alexander spoke.
“And that is why we need those documents.”
Dominic looked at him.
“You want control.”
Alexander smiled.
“I want fairness.”
“No.”
Dominic shook his head.
“You want power.”
For the first time.
Alexander’s smile disappeared.
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone turned.
It came from Victor’s pocket.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?”
Silence.
Then his face became pale.
“No.”
Dominic watched carefully.
Because whatever the message was…
Victor was afraid.
Victor slowly lowered the phone.
Alexander looked at him.
“What happened?”
Victor looked toward Dominic.
And whispered:
“The documents are gone.”
Nobody moved.
“What documents?”
Dominic asked.
Victor stared at him.
“The original Vale inheritance.”
“Your father’s final proof.”
“Someone stole them before we arrived.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Victor looked toward the doorway.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Because standing there was a person nobody expected.
A person who had been missing since the beginning.
Claire Bennett.
But she was not alone.
Beside her stood a man Dominic had never seen before.
Claire looked directly at Dominic.
Her voice was quiet.
“I’m sorry.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“For what?”
Claire looked at the stranger beside her.
Then answered:
“For bringing him here.”
The stranger stepped forward.
And Dominic recognized the face.
Not because they had met.
But because he had seen him before.
In old photographs.
In family records.
In the same place where all the secrets began.
The man looked at Dominic.
And said:
“My name is Lucas Vale.”
Everyone froze.
Mia covered her mouth.
Because Lucas was supposed to be dead.
The father of Harper.
The missing son of the Vale family.
But he was alive.
And he was holding the missing documents.
Lucas looked at Dominic.
“I know you hate me.”
A pause.
“But before you judge me…”
He raised the documents.
“You need to know the truth.”
Dominic stared.
Lucas continued:
“Your father did not hide these papers from Alexander.”
“He hid them from me.”
Silence.
Then Lucas said the words that changed everything.
May you like
“Because I was the one who helped destroy this family.”
