CHAPTER 7: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

The words from the radio echoed through the library.

“Dr. Elena Vale is leaving through the east gate.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For a moment, even Dominic Vale seemed unable to process what he had heard.

Because the human mind had limits.

There were things a person could accept.

Betrayal.

Lies.

Secrets.

But death was different.

Death was supposed to be final.

Twelve years ago, Dominic stood beside a grave.

He watched the coffin disappear beneath the ground.

He listened as people told him to accept reality.

He was told Elena was gone.

His child was gone.

That chapter of his life was over.

But now.

A security guard was telling him that the woman he buried was walking out of his house.

Alive.

Dominic slowly turned toward Claire.

“You knew.”

It was not a question.

Claire’s face changed.

“Dominic…”

“You knew she was here.”

Claire opened her mouth.

But no words came.

That was enough.

Dominic’s expression became unreadable.

The calm before a storm.

“You knew.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

The confession was quiet.

But it destroyed whatever trust remained.

“How long?”

Claire swallowed.

“Three months.”

Three months.

Dominic stared at her.

For three months, Elena had been somewhere close.

Somewhere in his world.

While he slept.

While he worked.

While he planned a wedding with another woman.

His first wife had been alive.

And Claire knew.

“Why?”

Dominic asked.

Claire looked at him.

“Because Elena was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Claire hesitated.

“Not of you.”

A pause.

“Of what would happen if you knew.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“She was afraid of me?”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“She was afraid Nathan would kill you.”

The room became silent.

Marcus immediately looked toward the door.

“Where is Nathan?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone suddenly realized something.

Nathan had been standing in the lower hall.

Under guard.

But nobody had checked on him since the security alarm started.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Take me to the east gate.”

The entire mansion came alive.

Security teams moved through the hallways.

Doors opened.

Footsteps echoed across the marble floors.

Employees stood frozen as Dominic passed.

But nobody dared speak.

Because everyone could feel it.

Something bigger than the missing maid.

Bigger than Claire.

Bigger than Nathan.

A twelve-year-old secret had returned.

Dominic reached the east wing.

The cameras showed a black vehicle leaving the property.

“Stop the car.”

Marcus immediately contacted security.

“Gate lockdown.”

But the vehicle did not stop.

Instead, it accelerated.

Dominic stared at the monitor.

“Who is driving?”

The guard answered:

“We cannot see.”

Daniel arrived behind him.

“Boss.”

Dominic turned.

“Where is Nathan?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“He is gone.”

The hallway went silent.

“What?”

“The guard assigned to him was found unconscious.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“How long?”

“About five minutes.”

Five minutes.

Exactly when Elena appeared.

Dominic understood immediately.

It was not a coincidence.

Nathan had escaped because Elena had returned.

They were connected.

Everyone was connected.

“Find the car.”

Dominic ordered.

“Now.”

Twenty minutes later.

The security team located the vehicle.

Abandoned near an old road outside the estate.

Dominic arrived personally.

The rain had started again.

Almost like the night twelve years ago.

The vehicle door was open.

Inside was a single object.

A small silver bird pendant.

Mia’s pendant.

Dominic picked it up.

His expression darkened.

Another message.

Another game.

A piece placed exactly where someone wanted him to find it.

Daniel searched the vehicle.

“Nothing else.”

Dominic looked around.

“Someone wanted us to find this.”

Daniel nodded.

“Why?”

Dominic looked at the pendant.

“Because they want us looking in one direction.”

Then a voice came from behind them.

“You always were good at seeing traps.”

Everyone turned.

A woman stood near the trees.

Rain falling over her.

Dark coat.

Hair pulled back.

Older than Dominic remembered.

But unmistakable.

Elena Vale.

Alive.

Dominic stopped breathing.

For twelve years, he had imagined this moment.

Thousands of times.

He imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But now that she was standing in front of him…

He felt something else.

Shock.

Elena looked at him.

Neither of them moved.

Finally, Dominic spoke.

“Are you real?”

A small sadness crossed her face.

“Yes.”

His voice became lower.

“Why?”

The question carried twelve years of pain.

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”

Elena looked away.

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

Dominic laughed once.

A broken sound.

“Protect me?”

“You let me bury you.”

“You let me mourn our child.”

“You let me spend twelve years believing I failed you.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“No.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“You don’t know.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“You were my wife.”

“You were my family.”

“And you disappeared.”

Elena looked at him.

Tears formed in her eyes.

“I disappeared because someone was trying to kill our son.”

Everything stopped.

“Our son.”

Dominic repeated.

Elena nodded.

“He survived.”

The words hit harder than anything.

“He survived the accident.”

Dominic could barely speak.

“Where is he?”

Elena looked toward the darkness behind her.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

She hesitated.

And that hesitation frightened Dominic.

Because it meant there was something worse.

“Tell me.”

Elena whispered:

“He is with the person who saved him.”

Dominic stared.

“Who?”

Elena looked directly at him.

“Nathan.”

The name felt like a weapon.

Dominic stepped back.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Elena.”

“He took him.”

The rain grew heavier.

“He told me he would protect him.”

“He promised me.”

“But then he disappeared.”

Dominic’s hands tightened.

“He raised my son?”

Elena nodded.

“For twelve years.”

The world became silent.

Then Dominic asked the question that mattered most.

“Does my son know who I am?”

Elena looked away.

And Dominic knew.

The answer was painful.

“No.”

A long pause.

“Your son believes Nathan Cross is his father.”

Dominic looked toward the dark road.

The man who saved him.

The man who betrayed him.

The man who stole his child.

Then Elena said something that made everything worse.

“Dominic…”

“There is one more thing.”

He turned.

“What?”

Elena’s face was filled with fear.

“Nathan did not take our son because he wanted him.”

“Then why?”

She whispered:

“Because your son inherited something.”

“What?”

Elena looked at him.

“Something your father died protecting.”

Dominic stared.

“What did he inherit?”

Elena’s voice dropped.

“The evidence that can destroy the entire Vale empire.”

Before Dominic could answer.

His phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A young voice spoke.

Calm.

Confused.

Afraid.

“Hello?”

Dominic froze.

Because he knew that voice.

A voice he had never heard before.

But somehow…

He recognized it.

“Who is this?”

The boy hesitated.

Then whispered:

“My name is Adrian.”

Dominic’s heart stopped.

“I think…”

The boy continued.

“I think you’re my real father.”

The call went silent.

Dominic closed his eyes.

After twelve years.

His son had finally found him.

May you like

But somewhere in the darkness…

Nathan Cross was still holding the truth.
