CHAPTER 5: THE BROTHER WHO DISAPPEARED

The words remained on the screen long after the camera feed went dark.

YOUR BROTHER IS ALIVE.

Dominic Vale stared at the empty monitor.

He did not blink.

He did not speak.

For a man who had built his entire life around control, this was the one thing he could not control.

The truth.

A truth that kept changing every time he thought he finally understood it.

First, Elena.

The woman he believed was dead.

Then Nathan.

The man he believed was his brother.

Then his father.

The man he believed he knew.

Now this.

A brother.

Someone who had existed all these years without Dominic knowing.

Daniel slowly looked toward him.

“Boss…”

Dominic raised one hand.

A signal for silence.

Because if he spoke too quickly, he knew anger would speak for him.

And anger was dangerous.

Especially for a man like Dominic.

He walked away from the monitor.

Every step felt heavier than before.

His father had spent his entire life teaching him about power.

About enemies.

About loyalty.

But he never taught him how to survive betrayal from his own blood.

“Bring Claire to the office.”

Dominic said.

Marcus immediately moved.

“And Nathan?”

Dominic stopped.

For a moment.

He almost answered.

Almost gave an order.

But then he looked back toward the hallway where Nathan had stood.

The man who saved his life.

The man who knew Elena’s secret.

The man who knew about his father.

“Keep him separated.”

Dominic said.

“Do not let him communicate with anyone.”

Marcus nodded.

Then left.

Daniel remained.

“Do you believe Claire?”

Dominic looked at the photograph still frozen on the monitor.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I believe my father left something behind.”

Daniel nodded.

Because he understood.

Dominic did not trust Claire.

But he trusted evidence.

That was how he survived.

Minutes later, the office doors opened.

Claire Bennett walked inside.

Calm.

Elegant.

Perfect.

Even after everything.

She looked like a woman entering a business meeting.

Not someone caught inside a restricted archive.

She wore a dark emerald dress.

Her blonde hair was perfectly arranged.

Her expression showed no fear.

That bothered Dominic more than anything.

A guilty person usually panicked.

Claire did not.

She looked prepared.

“Dominic.”

She said softly.

“I assume you have questions.”

Dominic stared at her.

“You were inside my father’s archive.”

“Yes.”

“You opened his safe.”

“Yes.”

“You knew the code.”

“Yes.”

Each answer came without hesitation.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Why?”

Claire looked at him.

“Because I was waiting for you to discover the truth.”

He almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

She replied.

“I expect you to listen.”

Dominic studied her.

“Three days ago, Mia disappeared.”

Claire’s face remained still.

“I know.”

“You know?”

“Yes.”

“You know she was locked beneath my house?”

Claire did not answer immediately.

That pause mattered.

Dominic noticed.

“Claire.”

Her expression finally changed.

Only slightly.

“I did not put her there.”

“But you knew.”

Another silence.

“Yes.”

The confession filled the room.

Daniel, standing near the door, immediately became alert.

Dominic’s voice dropped.

“Explain.”

Claire walked toward the desk.

She placed the black box down.

“I was trying to find something before they found it.”

“Who?”

Claire looked directly at him.

“Nathan.”

The name returned again.

Dominic felt his patience disappearing.

“You expect me to believe Nathan is the villain?”

“I expect you to stop seeing him as the man who saved your life.”

The sentence hit harder than Dominic expected.

Claire continued.

“Because Nathan has spent seventeen years making sure you saw only what he wanted you to see.”

Dominic remained silent.

“Your father did not trust Nathan.”

“Your father knew Nathan was dangerous.”

“My father left evidence?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Claire looked toward the black box.

“In this house.”

“Hidden.”

“Waiting for you.”

Dominic opened the box.

Inside was the old family ring.

A photograph.

And a small folded letter.

He picked up the letter.

The paper was old.

The edges were worn.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His father.

Dominic opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

Dominic, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

His chest tightened.

He continued reading.

The person closest to you is the one who will destroy everything.

Do not trust the man who calls himself your brother.

Dominic stopped.

His eyes moved back to the sentence.

The man who calls himself your brother.

Not his brother.

Calls himself.

A cold realization appeared.

Nathan was not just hiding information.

Nathan was hiding his identity.

Claire watched him carefully.

“You understand now.”

Dominic looked up.

“Where is my brother?”

Claire’s expression changed.

For the first time.

Real emotion appeared.

Sadness.

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

She replied.

“But I know someone who does.”

“Who?”

Claire looked toward the door.

“Your mother.”

The room became still.

Dominic’s mother.

A woman who had died eight years ago.

Another impossible answer.

Another secret.

“Claire.”

His voice became dangerous.

“My mother is dead.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then explain.”

Claire lowered her voice.

“Your mother was the only person who knew the truth about Nathan.”

Dominic stared.

“How?”

“Because Nathan was not your father’s son.”

Silence.

“He was adopted.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“Adopted?”

“Yes.”

“By my father?”

Claire nodded.

“But not because he wanted another child.”

“Then why?”

Claire looked at the photograph.

“The child your father wanted to protect was not Nathan.”

Dominic picked up the photograph.

The baby.

The handwriting.

The secrets.

Everything connected.

“Who was the baby?”

Claire did not answer.

Instead, she reached into her purse.

She removed a second photograph.

And placed it on the desk.

Dominic looked down.

A young woman.

Holding a newborn baby.

Behind her was the old Vale estate.

The woman was Elena.

But the baby was not Dominic.

His eyes moved to the back of the photograph.

Another message.

This time written by Elena.

I DID EVERYTHING TO KEEP HIM ALIVE.

Dominic looked at Claire.

“Who?”

Claire whispered:

“Your son.”

The room stopped.

Dominic felt like the ground disappeared beneath him.

“My…”

He could barely say the word.

“Son?”

Claire nodded.

“The child you were told died twelve years ago.”

Dominic stared at the photograph.

A child.

A son.

A life stolen from him.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

No greeting.

Only a voice.

A young male voice.

Calm.

Cold.

“Hello, Dominic.”

Dominic froze.

Because he knew that voice.

He had heard it once before.

In an old recording.

A recording from his father’s private files.

The voice continued.

“I think it’s time you met your brother.”

A pause.

“And your son.”

Dominic’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Who are you?”

The man laughed quietly.

Then answered:

“The person your entire family tried to erase.”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Dominic.

“Boss?”

Dominic slowly lowered the phone.

His face had changed.

Because for the first time…

The enemy was not coming for his empire.

The enemy was coming for his bloodline.

And somewhere in the world…

May you like

A man who should not exist…

Had just announced his return.
