CHAPTER 1: THE ROOM BENEATH THE MANSION

Dominic Vale had spent most of his life learning one simple rule.

Trust was a luxury powerful men could not afford.

He had seen friendships turn into traps.

He had watched loyal soldiers become enemies overnight.

He had learned that the people standing closest to him were sometimes the ones holding the knife.

But never once had he imagined the betrayal would come from inside his own home.

His own walls.

His own family.

His own bloodless empire.

The cellar door remained open behind him.

The cold air from underground moved through the hallway like a warning.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody dared.

Because everyone in that corridor understood what they had just witnessed.

Mia Carter was not missing.

She had been hidden.

And someone had wanted Dominic Vale to believe she was gone forever.

Dominic stood beside the wooden rack where Mia had been trapped.

His jacket covered her shoulders.

His hands were still steady.

But inside, something much darker had awakened.

For three days, while he negotiated deals and protected his empire outside the estate, a person he trusted had been keeping a woman and mother locked beneath his own home.

The thought was almost impossible to accept.

Almost.

Because Dominic knew something about betrayal.

It always looked impossible before it became undeniable.

“Call the doctor.”

His voice was quiet.

But every person heard the command.

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

“Already done.”

Marcus remained near the doorway.

His eyes moved between Nathan Cross and Dominic.

Waiting.

Watching.

Because Marcus had worked for Dominic long enough to know something important.

The most dangerous moment was not when Dominic shouted.

It was when Dominic became silent.

Nathan stood frozen.

His perfect image of concern was beginning to fall apart.

“Dom…”

He said softly.

“This is insane.”

Dominic slowly turned his head.

“Insane?”

Nathan swallowed.

“I mean…”

“I had no idea she was down here.”

Dominic stared at him.

For seventeen years.

Nathan Cross had been the one man Dominic trusted without hesitation.

The man who knew every weakness.

Every secret.

Every hidden account.

Every enemy.

Nathan had been beside him when Dominic built his organization from nothing.

He had attended meetings where nobody else was allowed.

He had entered rooms where even Dominic’s closest guards waited outside.

And now he stood inside a cellar where Dominic’s employee had been imprisoned.

Dominic walked closer.

Slowly.

“You told me Claire locked this door.”

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.”

“You told me you approved it.”

Nathan hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Dominic noticed.

A second was enough.

“You knew.”

Nathan immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“You misunderstand.”

“I saw the lock.”

“I assumed—”

“You assumed?”

Dominic’s voice became colder.

“You are telling me you saw a brand-new lock on a private cellar in my house.”

“You knew Claire was involved.”

“And you never checked what was inside?”

Nathan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence answered more than words.

Behind Dominic, Mia slowly opened her eyes again.

Her voice was weak.

“Dominic…”

He immediately turned.

The anger disappeared from his face for a moment.

“Don’t speak.”

“You need to rest.”

Mia looked toward Harper.

The little girl was holding onto her mother’s arm.

“She was scared.”

Mia whispered.

“Who?”

Dominic asked.

Mia’s eyes moved toward Nathan.

And Dominic saw it.

Fear.

Not for herself.

For Harper.

“Claire…”

Mia whispered.

“Claire did this.”

The hallway became completely silent.

Nathan looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.”

Mia closed her eyes.

“She wasn’t alone.”

Dominic froze.

“What do you mean?”

Mia struggled to breathe.

Her fingers tightened around Harper’s hand.

“There was someone else.”

“Someone who knew the house.”

“Someone who knew your schedule.”

“Someone who knew exactly when you would be away.”

Dominic felt a cold pressure in his chest.

Because only a handful of people knew those details.

Mia continued.

“They kept asking me about something.”

“What?”

Mia looked at him.

“The old account.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

“What account?”

Nathan looked away.

And that small movement did not escape Dominic.

“Mia.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“What account?”

Mia’s voice became barely audible.

“The one your father created before he died.”

Nobody moved.

The name of Dominic’s father carried weight inside the Vale family.

A man who built the foundation of their empire.

A man who left behind more questions than answers.

“My father’s account was closed twenty years ago.”

Dominic said.

Mia shook her head slowly.

“No.”

“They said it wasn’t.”

“They said your father hid something.”

“Something that could destroy the Vale family.”

Dominic stared at her.

For years, he believed he knew every secret his father left behind.

Apparently, he was wrong.

A sound suddenly came from upstairs.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked toward the mansion hallway.

Daniel checked his device.

“Dominic…”

His face changed.

“What?”

Daniel looked up.

“The security system detected someone entering the east wing.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Claire Bennett.”

The entire hallway went still.

Because Claire was not supposed to be there.

Not after discovering Mia had been found.

Not after knowing Dominic would come looking for answers.

Dominic looked toward the staircase.

His expression became unreadable.

“Lock every exit.”

Marcus nodded.

“And Claire?”

Dominic picked up the weapon from his side.

The same weapon he carried for years.

The same weapon enemies feared.

But this time, he was not hunting an enemy outside his walls.

He was hunting the person who had been living beside him.

“Bring my fiancée to me.”

A pause.

Then Dominic added:

“Alive.”

Everyone moved.

But before they reached the staircase, Dominic’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

Only one sentence.

He opened it.

And the blood drained from his face.

Because the picture on the screen was not of Claire.

Not of Nathan.

Not of Mia.

It was a photograph of Dominic’s first wife.

The woman everyone believed had died twelve years ago.

Under the picture were four words.

SHE NEVER DIED, DOMINIC.
