CHAPTER 4: THE MAN WHO SAVED HIM

Dominic Vale had spent his entire adult life believing one thing.
The people who betrayed him were the ones who feared him.
Enemies.
Rivals.
Men who wanted his territory.
Men who wanted his money.
Men who wanted his name.
He never imagined the greatest threat would come from the man standing beside him.
The man who had carried him out of a burning vehicle.
The man who had held pressure against his wounds while waiting for help.
The man who had promised him:
“Brother, I will never let you fall.”
Nathan Cross.
For seventeen years, those words had meant everything.
Now they felt like a carefully prepared lie.
Dominic stood in the darkened office.
The paper trembled slightly between his fingers.
Not because he was afraid.
Dominic Vale did not scare easily.
The man had faced armed enemies.
He had survived attacks that should have ended his life.
He had watched people he trusted disappear.
But this was different.
Because fear was not the emotion inside him.
It was disappointment.
The kind that only came from someone you never expected to hurt you.
Nathan stared at the handwritten sentence.
THE MAN WHO SAVED YOUR LIFE IS THE MAN WHO TOOK MINE.
For several seconds.
Nobody moved.
The guards waited.
Daniel watched Dominic carefully.
Marcus kept his hand near his weapon.
But nobody interrupted.
Because everyone understood.
This was not a normal investigation anymore.
This was personal.
“Tell me it is not true.”
Dominic finally said.
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Nathan slowly looked up.
“Dom.”
“Tell me.”
Nathan swallowed.
“I don’t know what that letter means.”
Dominic stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I’m telling you the truth.”
“The truth?”
Dominic stepped closer.
“You have spent seventeen years telling me the truth.”
“Every decision.”
“Every business move.”
“Every enemy.”
“You were the one person I never questioned.”
Nathan’s expression softened.
“Because I was protecting you.”
Dominic’s eyes hardened.
“No.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
Nathan looked hurt.
But Dominic continued.
“You knew about my father.”
“You knew about the investigation.”
“You knew something was wrong with the basement.”
“And you kept silent.”
“That is not protection.”
“That is control.”
Nathan looked away.
That small movement confirmed something.
Dominic noticed.
“Look at me.”
Nathan slowly raised his eyes.
“What else have you hidden?”
Silence.
A long silence.
Then Nathan spoke.
“There are things about your family you were never supposed to know.”
Dominic laughed softly.
A cold sound.
“My family?”
“You mean my father?”
Nathan did not answer.
“You mean Elena?”
Nathan’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Dominic saw it.
“You knew.”
Nathan remained silent.
“You knew Elena was alive.”
Another silence.
And that silence was louder than any confession.
Dominic took a step backward.
For the first time.
He looked at Nathan like he was looking at a stranger.
“How long?”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“Dom…”
“How long did you know?”
“Years.”
The word landed like a weapon.
Years.
Dominic repeated it in his mind.
Years.
While he visited Elena’s grave.
While he carried guilt.
While he believed he had failed the woman he loved.
Nathan knew.
“You watched me mourn her.”
Dominic whispered.
“You watched me destroy myself.”
Nathan’s voice became desperate.
“It wasn’t that simple.”
“Then explain it.”
Nathan looked toward the window.
The rain outside continued.
Almost identical to the night Elena disappeared.
“Your father discovered the truth before he died.”
“What truth?”
Nathan hesitated.
“Your family was never as clean as you believed.”
Dominic’s expression darkened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“Then tell me.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Your father had another child.”
The room froze.
Nobody spoke.
Even the guards looked surprised.
Dominic stared.
“No.”
Nathan slowly shook his head.
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Your father had a daughter before he married your mother.”
Dominic’s mind raced.
Impossible.
His father had one son.
Him.
Everyone knew that.
“You are lying.”
Nathan looked almost angry.
“I wish I was.”
Dominic moved closer.
“Who?”
Nathan hesitated.
Then said:
“Elena.”
The room went silent.
Dominic stopped breathing.
“What?”
Nathan continued.
“Your first wife was not a stranger who entered your family.”
“She was connected to it before you ever met her.”
Dominic shook his head.
“No.”
“That makes no sense.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Your father kept her existence hidden.”
“Why?”
“Because he was afraid.”
“Of what?”
Nathan lowered his voice.
“Of what she would become.”
Dominic stared.
His entire understanding of his past began collapsing.
Elena.
His wife.
His lost love.
The woman he thought fate brought into his life.
Was connected to his family.
Was connected to his father.
Was connected to the secrets everyone had hidden from him.
Before Dominic could ask another question.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone turned.
Marcus immediately spoke into his radio.
“Movement in the east wing.”
Daniel looked toward Dominic.
“Someone entered the private archive room.”
Dominic’s expression changed.
The archive.
The one room in the mansion only he and his father had access to.
A room untouched for twelve years.
“Who?”
Marcus listened.
Then his face changed.
“Boss.”
“Who is it?”
Marcus hesitated.
“It’s Claire.”
Dominic immediately moved.
But Daniel stopped him.
“Wait.”
Dominic looked at him.
Daniel pointed toward the security monitor.
The camera feed from the archive room appeared.
Claire stood inside.
Not frightened.
Not hiding.
Calmly walking toward the old family safe.
She knew exactly where she was going.
She entered a code.
The safe opened.
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
Because nobody knew that code.
Nobody.
Except him.
His father.
And Elena.
Claire removed a small black box from inside.
Then she turned toward the camera.
Almost like she knew she was being watched.
She smiled.
A slow, confident smile.
Then she spoke.
Not to the camera.
To Dominic.
“I knew you would find this.”
Dominic froze.
Claire opened the box.
Inside was a ring.
An old family ring.
A ring Dominic recognized immediately.
His father’s.
The same ring missing from his father’s belongings after his death.
Claire held it up.
Then said:
“Your father left me something.”
Dominic stared at the screen.
Impossible.
Claire continued.
“And he told me…”
A pause.
“He told me if you ever discovered the truth…”
Her smile widened.
“Give Dominic the final proof.”
She reached inside the box.
And pulled out a photograph.
A photograph of a newborn baby.
On the back of the photograph were three words.
Dominic leaned closer.
His face changed.
Because he recognized the handwriting.
His father’s handwriting.
The message said:
YOUR BROTHER IS ALIVE.
The screen went black.
May you like
And for the first time in years…
Dominic Vale realized he might not know his own family at all.
