Chapter 8 - THE LEAK

The note beneath Khloe's door became a police report.
The ultrasound became evidence.
The building's security footage became the first real surprise.
At 6:14 p.m., a woman wearing a baseball cap and oversized coat had entered behind a resident carrying groceries.
She never looked directly at the camera.
She rode the elevator to Khloe's floor.
She remained there for less than two minutes.
Then she left.
The image quality was poor.
But the woman carried a distinctive handbag.
Mara enlarged one frame.
Khloe stared at the small gold clasp.
"I've seen that bag."
Harrison looked at her.
"Where?"
Khloe opened her phone.
She searched Vanessa's public social-media account.
Three months earlier, Vanessa had posted a photograph from a charity brunch.
On her arm was the same limited-edition handbag.
Harrison studied both images.
"Similar is not identical."
"It is identical."
"To you."
"In court, we prove it."
Khloe hated the restraint.
She also understood it.
"Can police question her?"
"They can decide what they have grounds to do."
"We provide the information and stay out of their way."
The next morning, a celebrity gossip website published an article with the headline:
BILLIONAIRE DEVELOPER'S PREGNANT WIFE IN BITTER BREAKDOWN.
The article claimed Khloe had become increasingly unstable after fertility treatments and pregnancy losses.
It cited anonymous sources close to the Harrington family.
It described Harrison as controlling.
It suggested Khloe had accessed company files in an attempt to punish Richard for seeking divorce.
And it included a sentence that made Harrison stop reading aloud.
Khloe took the phone from him.
She read it herself.
Sources say Mr. Harrington has privately expressed concern that stress associated with litigation may affect his wife's pregnancy.
Khloe laughed.
It was not a pleasant sound.
"He threatens me with stress and then tells the press he is worried about my stress."
Harrison's expression was cold.
"We don't know he leaked it."
"You are going to make me throw something if you keep saying that."
Mara entered with coffee.
"Before anyone throws anything, there is more."
She placed a printed page on the table.
A reporter had emailed Harrison's office asking for comment on an alleged psychiatric hospitalization after Khloe's second miscarriage.
Khloe stared at the words.
"I was never hospitalized."
"I know," Harrison said.
"But someone gave them enough truth to make the lie sound believable."
Khloe sat down slowly.
"Richard knew I saw a counselor."
"He knew I took a sleeping medication for four nights."
"He knew I stayed with Harry for a week because I couldn't walk into the nursery we had started."
Her voice hardened.
"And now someone has turned that into psychiatric hospitalization."
Harrison folded the page.
"We correct the record once."
"Briefly."
"Then we stop feeding them."
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
Harrison looked at her.
"No?"
"I want to speak."
"That is usually a bad idea during active litigation."
"I don't want to discuss the case."
"I want to discuss grief."
The room went quiet.
Khloe continued.
"They are trying to make miscarriage sound like evidence that I am unstable."
"I am not letting them turn the worst thing that happened to me into shame."
Harrison leaned back.
He considered her words.
"One statement."
"Written."
"No questions."
"And I approve it before release."
Khloe nodded.
Her statement went out two hours later.
It said she had sought grief counseling after pregnancy loss.
It said she was grateful she had.
It said mourning a child was not evidence of incompetence, instability, or weakness.
And it asked the media to stop treating private medical grief as entertainment.
The statement spread far beyond the divorce story.
Women shared it.
Doctors reposted it.
Pregnancy-loss organizations quoted it.
By evening, the article attacking Khloe had been revised.
The false hospitalization claim disappeared.
Richard called Martin Keane in a rage.
"She is turning this into a sympathy campaign."
Martin sounded exhausted.
"She issued a four-paragraph statement about miscarriage grief."
"And now I'm the villain."
"You were always going to be the husband with a pregnant mistress."
Richard went silent.
Martin continued.
"The problem is not public relations."
"The problem is documents."
"And Daniel Price."
"And now potentially a threat sent to your wife."
Richard's voice sharpened.
"I had nothing to do with that."
"Good."
"Then do not call her."
"Do not call Vanessa about it."
"And do not ask anyone to make it disappear."
Richard looked toward the windows of his office.
"Police contacted Vanessa."
Martin stopped.
"Why?"
"Something about a bag on camera."
"Did she go to Khloe's apartment?"
"She says no."
"Do you believe her?"
Richard did not answer.
Martin exhaled.
"That silence should terrify you."
Meanwhile, Vanessa sat in a conference room with her own newly hired attorney, Paige Nolan.
Paige was younger than Harrison, less famous, and no less alert.
She placed the security still on the table.
"Is this you?"
Vanessa looked at it.
"You cannot see her face."
"That was not my question."
Vanessa folded her arms over her belly.
"I own that bag."
"So do other people."
"Were you in Khloe Harrington's building on Tuesday?"
Vanessa looked away.
Paige closed the folder.
"I cannot protect you from facts you hide from me."
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Probably because you keep hiding facts."
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"She is destroying my life."
Paige stared at her.
"She is Richard's wife."
"You are pregnant with Richard's child."
"A court froze property purchased while Richard was married."
"Whatever you think of Khloe personally, you need to understand how this looks to everyone who is not emotionally inside it."
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"Richard said the marriage was over."
"Legally, it wasn't."
"Emotionally, it was."
"Courts do not divide emotional property."
Vanessa looked down at her hands.
For the first time, uncertainty entered her face.
"He promised me the penthouse."
Paige's expression softened slightly.
"A promise from a married man is not a deed."
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"You sound like her lawyer."
"I sound like yours."
The next blow landed Friday.
Harrington Commercial's primary lender suspended a pending line-of-credit increase.
Not because of Khloe.
Because the lender had discovered undisclosed litigation involving company-related entities.
Two investors requested independent audits.
A city council committee postponed consideration of a Harrington zoning application.
Richard watched his empire begin to react to pressure he could not control.
At four, he called Khloe directly.
She stared at the screen.
Harrison was beside her.
"Do I answer?"
"Your choice."
Khloe answered and put the phone on speaker.
"Hello."
Richard's voice was quiet.
"We need to stop this."
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"Stop what?"
"Destroying each other."
She almost laughed.
"I filed one motion to keep money from disappearing."
"Your brother is digging through my company."
"Because you used your company to move marital assets."
"Khloe, listen to me."
"No."
The word came easily now.
"You listen to me."
Richard went silent.
Khloe continued.
"You filed papers calling me unstable."
"You let private details about my miscarriages reach the press."
"You took money from a trust my mother left me."
"You bought a penthouse for another woman while I was carrying your daughter."
"And someone used a private ultrasound to threaten me."
Richard's voice changed.
"I did not send that note."
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"I didn't say you did."
Richard realized his mistake.
A long silence followed.
Then he said,
"Vanessa can be impulsive."
Khloe's pulse jumped.
Harrison wrote something on a legal pad and slid it toward her.
Keep him talking.
Khloe spoke carefully.
"What does that mean?"
"Nothing."
"You brought her name into it."
"I am saying I can't control everything she does."
"Did she take my ultrasound?"
"I don't know."
"Did you give her access to it?"
Silence.
Khloe closed her eyes.
"Richard."
"She used my laptop sometimes."
The answer was enough.
"You let your mistress use a computer connected to my medical portal?"
"I didn't think about it."
"That has been your excuse for two years."
Richard's voice hardened.
"You are not innocent in this."
Khloe stared at the phone.
"What did I do?"
"You chose Harrison over me."
She stopped breathing for a second.
Then something inside her finally broke cleanly instead of painfully.
"No, Richard."
"You chose Vanessa over me."
"You chose hidden accounts over me."
"You chose lies over me."
"Harrison was simply the first person who believed I was worth protecting after you decided I wasn't."
She ended the call.
The room remained silent.
Harrison looked at his sister.
"You okay?"
Khloe nodded.
And for once, it was true.
That evening, Mara called with another discovery.
Someone inside Harrington Commercial had attempted to remotely wipe Daniel Price's company laptop after the preservation order was entered.
The attempt failed.
The system had logged the administrator credentials used.

They belonged to Richard Harrington.
