Chapter 3 - THE FIRST INJUNCTION

At 8:12 the next morning, Harrison Cole walked into the Montgomery County Courthouse carrying a black leather briefcase and an emergency petition that would change Richard Harrington's life before lunch.
He did not notify the press.
He did not call Richard.
He did not make threats.
He simply filed.
The petition requested temporary restraints against the transfer, concealment, encumbrance, or dissipation of specified marital assets.
Attached were bank records.
Corporate registrations.
Transfer histories.
The unsigned consolidation agreement.
And a sworn declaration from Khloe stating that she had recently discovered substantial marital assets had been moved without her knowledge.
Judge Evelyn Mercer reviewed the papers in chambers.
She was known for disliking theatrics almost as much as she disliked financial dishonesty.
Twenty-eight minutes later, she granted limited emergency relief pending a full hearing.
By nine, three domestic accounts were frozen.
Two pending transfers were blocked.
One closing attorney received notice that title to the Rittenhouse penthouse might be subject to marital claims.
And Richard Harrington's carefully timed Friday closing stopped moving.
Khloe was sitting in Dr. Morris's office when Richard discovered what had happened.
His first call went unanswered.
His second call came thirty seconds later.
Then a third.
Then a fourth.
Dr. Morris looked at the vibrating phone on the chair beside Khloe.
"You don't have to answer that."
Khloe swallowed.
"I know."
Her phone vibrated again.
Richard.
Then a text appeared.
Call me now.
Another followed.
What did you do?
Khloe turned the phone facedown.
For the first time since discovering the affair, she felt something other than grief.
Control.
It was small.
Temporary.
But it was hers.
When she left the clinic, Harrison was waiting beside a black sedan.
"You're not going home alone."
Khloe looked at him.
"He knows."
"Yes."
"How angry?"
Harrison opened the car door.
"His lawyer called me four times in eleven minutes."
"So very."
"Professionally distressed."
Khloe almost smiled.
The smile vanished when she saw Richard's latest message.
If you embarrass me publicly, you will regret it.
She showed Harrison.
He read it once.
"Good."
"Good?"
"He put it in writing."
Khloe shook her head.
"You are impossible."
"I am useful."
They drove to the Lower Merion estate together.
Richard's car was already in the circular drive.
A second car belonging to his attorney was parked near the entrance.
Harrison glanced at both vehicles.
"You stay behind me."
"Harry, this is my house."
"Today it is also a potential crime scene for financial records."
The front door opened before they reached it.
Richard stood in the foyer.
He wore a dark suit without a tie.
His face was controlled.
His eyes were not.
"You brought him here?"
Khloe stepped inside.
"He is my attorney."
Richard looked at Harrison.
"You froze operating funds."
Harrison removed his coat.
"No."
"The judge froze specific accounts supported by evidence."
"You knew exactly what those accounts were used for."
"Then your lawyer can explain that at the hearing."
Richard's attorney, Charles Venn, appeared from the library.
Charles was a silver-haired corporate litigator who had represented Harrington companies for nearly fifteen years.
He looked exhausted already.
"Harrison."
"Charles."
"This is unnecessary."
"Then dissolve it with clean records."
Charles's jaw moved.
"You know it's not that simple."
Harrison smiled faintly.
"It usually becomes complicated when money moves through eleven entities."
Richard's face changed.
Only for a moment.
But Khloe saw it.
Eleven.
Harrison had deliberately used the number.
Richard now knew they had found more than Beechmont.
"Khloe," Richard said quietly.
"Can I speak to you alone?"
"No," Harrison answered.
Richard ignored him.
"I'm talking to my wife."
Khloe felt anger rise.
"And your wife is saying no."
Richard looked at her as though he had never heard that word from her before.
Maybe he hadn't.
Not when it mattered.
"This can still be handled privately."
Khloe stared at him.
"Was that your plan?"
Richard's eyes sharpened.
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing."
She walked toward the staircase.
"I'm tired."
Richard stepped in front of her.
Not touching.
But blocking the path.
Harrison moved once.
That was all.
One step forward.
Richard immediately moved aside.
Khloe noticed.
So did everyone else.
She climbed the stairs.
Halfway up, Richard called after her.
"You don't understand what Harrison is doing to us."
Khloe turned.
"No, Richard."
"I think I'm finally starting to understand what you did to us."
Silence swallowed the foyer.
Richard went pale.
Harrison looked at Khloe but said nothing.
She continued upstairs.
Inside the bedroom, she locked the door and leaned against it.
Her hands were shaking.
She had not planned to say that.
But she no longer regretted it.
Minutes later, someone knocked softly.
"Khloe?"
It was Harrison.
She opened the door.
"Did I ruin anything?"
"No."
"He knows I know."
"He knew the second the injunction arrived."
Harrison stepped inside.
"What matters now is that he doesn't know how much."
Khloe looked toward the hallway.
"Can I stay here?"
"Legally? Yes."
"Strategically? I don't love it."
"Emotionally?"
Harrison's expression softened.
"Emotionally, I want to carry you out myself and never let you see him again."
Khloe looked down.
"But?"
"But this is your decision."
For years, Richard had decided where they lived.
Where they vacationed.
Which events they attended.
Which charity boards mattered.
Which friends were useful.
Harrison's simple sentence almost felt unfamiliar.
This is your decision.
Khloe looked toward the nursery.
"One more night."
"Why?"
"Because there are things in this house that belong to me."
"Documents?"
"Memories."
Harrison nodded.
"Then one night."
"And my investigator stays outside."
Khloe gave him a tired look.
"The one Richard was using?"
"Mine is better."
Downstairs, Richard and Charles argued behind the library door.
"How much did they find?" Richard demanded.
Charles lowered his voice.
"Enough for a judge to act without hearing from us first."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have."
Richard paced toward the window.
"Can we move the foreign accounts?"
Charles stared at him.
"Do not ask me that again."
Richard turned.
"I'm asking about legal options."
"No, you're not."
Charles closed his briefcase.
"Listen to me carefully."
"From this moment forward, you assume every transfer will be examined."
"Every text may become an exhibit."
"Every person you pressure may become a witness."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Whose side are you on?"
Charles's face went still.
"The side that keeps clients out of deeper trouble."
Richard's phone buzzed.
Vanessa.
He declined the call.
It rang again.
Charles glanced at the screen.
He said nothing.
Richard looked embarrassed for the first time.
"She's involved in a project."
"Of course she is."
Charles picked up his coat.
"Do not contact Khloe about settlement terms without me."
"Do not threaten her."
"Do not move money."
"And for the love of God, do not delete anything."
When Charles left, Richard answered Vanessa.
"What?"
"You sound charming."
"Harrison froze accounts."
Silence.
"Which accounts?"
"Three domestic accounts and the penthouse closing."
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"The penthouse?"
"Yes."
"You told me nobody could touch it."
"I didn't expect Khloe to run to Harrison."
"She's his sister."
"I know that."
"Apparently you forgot."
Richard closed his eyes.
"Vanessa, stop."
"No."
"You stop treating me like I'm the inconvenient part of your life."
"I'm carrying your child."
"And I am not spending my pregnancy hiding in some rented condo while Khloe sits in a mansion paid for by your company."
Richard lowered his voice.
"The house is heavily mortgaged."
"Then let it collapse on her."
The words came without hesitation.
Richard looked toward the ceiling.
Khloe was somewhere above him.
For the first time, he seemed disturbed by Vanessa's cruelty.
"Don't say things like that."
Vanessa laughed.
"Interesting."
"You didn't mind when we joked about her before."
Richard said nothing.
"You started this, Ricky."
"Don't suddenly pretend you're the decent one."
That night, Khloe packed one suitcase.
Not jewelry.
Not designer clothes.
She packed photographs of her mother.
Letters from her father.
Her old drafting pencils.
A framed picture of her and Harrison as children standing ankle-deep in the Atlantic Ocean.
The cream baby booties she had placed in Richard's gift box.
And the ultrasound photographs Richard had barely looked at.
At midnight, she opened the drawer beside the bed.
Her passport was gone.
Khloe searched again.
Then the safe.
Then her desk.
Nothing.
Her birth certificate was missing too.
So were two pieces of family jewelry inherited from her mother.
Khloe stood completely still.
Then she called Harrison.
"My passport is gone."
His voice was alert instantly.
"Anything else?"
She told him.
A long silence followed.
"Leave now."
"Harry—"
"Now, Khloe."
"Do not confront him."
"Take the suitcase and walk downstairs."
"I'm five minutes away."
Khloe ended the call.
She opened the bedroom door.
Richard was standing in the hallway.
He looked at the suitcase.
Then at her.
"Where are you going?"
Khloe's heartbeat slammed against her ribs.
"To Harry's."
Richard's face went blank.
"No."
It was the first time he had said the word like an order.
Khloe tightened her grip on the suitcase.
"Move, Richard."
He did not.
Then headlights swept across the upstairs windows.
A car entered the drive.
Richard looked toward the glass.
Khloe watched realization reach his face.
Harrison had arrived.
Richard stepped aside.
Khloe walked past him without another word.
At the bottom of the stairs, she looked back once.
The man she had married stood alone beneath the chandelier.
He looked furious.
He looked frightened.
And for the first time, he looked small.
Outside, Harrison took her suitcase.
"Did he touch you?"
"No."
"Did he threaten you?"
"Not exactly."
Harrison opened the car door.
Khloe stopped.
"Harry."
"What?"
"He took my passport."
Harrison's expression became cold enough to frighten her.
May you like
"Then tomorrow we find out why."
