Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN IN THE PENTHOUSE

Khloe spent her first night away from Richard in a guest room overlooking Central Park.
Harrison's apartment was quiet, immaculate, and almost aggressively secure.
Two locks on the service entrance.
A private elevator requiring a coded key.
Cameras in the hall.
A doorman who had worked in the building for nineteen years.
Khloe slept for less than three hours.
At dawn, she walked into the kitchen and found Harrison already dressed.
"Do you ever sleep?"
He looked up from his coffee.
"During recess."
She sat across from him.
"I want to know why he took my passport."
"We will."
"Today."
Harrison studied her.
"Today."
Mara arrived at seven with a laptop and a paper bag of bagels.
By seven-fifteen, they had an answer that made Khloe's stomach turn.
A private aviation company had received a deposit from one of Richard's shell entities.
The reservation was for a flight to Nassau scheduled six weeks later.
Three passengers.
Richard Harrington.
Vanessa Kensington.
And an unnamed infant.
Khloe stared at the screen.
"Six weeks?"
Mara nodded.
"Reservation can be changed, but yes."
"I'm not due for four months."
"Which suggests the infant isn't yours."
Khloe felt a wave of nausea.
Vanessa was farther along than she had realized.
Or the reservation was flexible.
Either possibility was devastating.
Harrison pointed toward another line.
"Why Nassau?"
Mara clicked into a second file.
"Because one of the entities holding transferred funds banks through the Bahamas."
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"He was planning to leave?"
"Possibly."
"With her?"
"Possibly."
"Before our daughter was born?"
Harrison closed the laptop halfway.
"Khloe, don't build conclusions faster than the documents support them."
She laughed bitterly.
"I think the documents are doing fine on their own."
At eight-thirty, Harrison received a call from courthouse administration.
Richard's attorneys had requested an expedited hearing to dissolve the freeze.
The hearing was scheduled for the following Monday.
"Good," Harrison said.
Khloe looked at him.
"Why is everything good to you?"
"Because he has to explain himself under oath."
Mara smiled.
"And because people who build complicated lies hate simple questions."
By midmorning, another surprise arrived.
A process server delivered divorce papers to Harrison's office.
Khloe held the envelope without opening it.
She had known it was coming.
Still, seeing her married name beside the word Defendant made her chest tighten.
Harrison reached for the papers.
"Do you want me to read them first?"
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
She opened the envelope.
Richard alleged irretrievable breakdown.
He claimed separate ownership of most business interests.
He requested sale of the Lower Merion residence.
He sought a confidentiality order.
And buried in the filing was a statement so cruel that Khloe had to read it twice.
Richard alleged that Khloe's emotional instability following prior pregnancy losses had made communication increasingly difficult.
Her hands went numb.
"He used the miscarriages."
Harrison took the page.
His eyes moved once across the paragraph.
His face became expressionless.
Mara stopped typing.
"What did he say?"
Khloe could barely speak.
"He is saying grief made me unstable."
Harrison placed the paper flat on the table.
"He just made a serious mistake."
"Stop calling everything a mistake."
Khloe stood abruptly.
"He held me after the first miscarriage."
"He sat on the bathroom floor with me for six hours."
"He told me it was not my fault."
Her voice cracked.
"And now he is putting it in a court filing like it was evidence against me."
Harrison rose.
Khloe stepped away before he could touch her.
"I don't want comfort."
She wiped her face angrily.
"I want him to stop being able to do this."
Harrison nodded once.
"Then help me prove what he is."
The sentence steadied her.
Khloe sat again.
"What do you need?"
"Everything."
The next three days became an investigation disguised as heartbreak.
Mara traced money.
Harrison drafted subpoenas.
Khloe reconstructed years of household finances from memory.
She remembered contractors.
Wire instructions.
Closing dates.
Names Richard had muttered while taking calls in airport lounges.
Every small detail became another line on Mara's expanding chart.
On Friday afternoon, a courier arrived with a package addressed to Khloe.
No return name.
Inside was a photograph.
Vanessa stood in the Rittenhouse penthouse beneath a chandelier still wrapped in protective plastic.
She was visibly pregnant.
Her hand rested over her stomach.
Behind her, stacked against the wall, were nursery wallpaper samples.
One was pale gold with tiny white stars.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written five words.
He chose us a long time ago.
Khloe stared at the handwriting.
Harrison reached for the picture.
"Do you recognize it?"
"No."
Mara photographed both sides.
"Could be Vanessa."
Khloe looked at the image again.
The cruelty felt deliberate.
Personal.
Vanessa did not merely want Richard.
She wanted Khloe to know she had been replaced.
Harrison placed the photograph inside an evidence sleeve.
"Do not respond."
Khloe's jaw tightened.
"I wasn't going to."
But that evening, Vanessa called.
Khloe's phone displayed an unfamiliar number.
She almost ignored it.
Something made her answer.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice came through the line.
Smooth.
Confident.
"You got my photograph."
Khloe's entire body went cold.
Harrison was across the room reviewing a brief.
She raised one finger toward him.
He looked up immediately.
"Vanessa?"
A small laugh.
"So he finally told you my name."
"You told me your name two years ago every time you texted my husband."
Silence.
Then Vanessa laughed again.
"You're calmer than I expected."
"You expected me to cry?"
"I expected you to understand when something is over."
Khloe looked at Harrison.
He quietly activated a recording device only after gesturing for Khloe to state the call was being documented if required by law.
Instead, Khloe switched to speaker so Harrison could hear and took notes, avoiding any secret recording issue.
"Why are you calling me?"
Vanessa exhaled.
"Because Richard is still trying to protect your feelings, and it's becoming inconvenient."
Khloe almost admired the arrogance.
"My feelings seem very important to both of you."
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Pretend you're clever."
Harrison's eyebrows lifted.
Khloe looked away before she laughed.
Vanessa continued.
"The marriage has been dead for years."
"Richard stayed because of guilt."
"Then you got pregnant, and everything became complicated."
Khloe's fingers tightened around the phone.
"Complicated for whom?"
"For everyone."
"My daughter seems to be the only person not consulted."
Vanessa's voice hardened.
"Your daughter will be fine."
"Richard will provide whatever support the court requires."
There it was.
Not love.
Not family.
Support the court requires.
Khloe looked at Harrison.
His expression had gone cold.
"And your baby?"
Vanessa paused.
"My son will be raised by both of his parents."
Khloe closed her eyes.
A son.
Richard's other child was a boy.
"Congratulations."
The words surprised even her.
Vanessa seemed equally surprised.
"You mean that?"
"Your baby didn't betray me."
For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.
Khloe continued.
"Neither did mine."
"So whatever game you think you're playing, leave the children out of it."
Vanessa recovered quickly.
"There isn't a game."
"There is a future."
"And you're not in it."
Khloe stared at the photograph on Harrison's desk.
"Then why are you calling me?"
The silence on the line lasted three seconds.
It was enough.
Vanessa was not secure.
She was terrified.
Khloe understood suddenly.
The penthouse had been frozen.
The accounts were blocked.
Richard had not completed the divorce.
And Vanessa's beautiful replacement life had begun to wobble before she ever moved into it.
"Don't contact me again," Khloe said.
"Anything you need to say can go through counsel."
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"You think your brother can scare me?"
Khloe looked directly at Harrison.
"No."
"I think the facts should."
She ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Harrison said,
"Pretend you're clever?"
Khloe laughed despite herself.
Mara shook her head.
"Vanessa really needs better instincts."
The humor lasted less than a minute.
Harrison's assistant entered carrying a sealed envelope.
"This was hand-delivered for Ms. Harrington."
Khloe opened it.
Inside was a copy of an amended divorce filing.
Richard had added a request for temporary exclusive possession of the Lower Merion estate.
And beneath that request was a new accusation.
He claimed Khloe had improperly accessed confidential company information and removed proprietary financial records from the marital home.
Khloe looked up.
"He's accusing me of stealing."
Harrison read the paragraph.
"He is trying to turn discovery of his transfers into misconduct by you."
"Can he do that?"
"He can write anything his lawyer is willing to sign."
Harrison's eyes narrowed at the signature page.
Charles Venn's name was not there.
A different lawyer had signed it.
Harrison noticed too.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"Charles is gone."
That same evening, in a private conference room downtown, Charles Venn sat across from Richard Harrington.
"I told you not to file that accusation."
Richard folded his arms.
"Then I hired someone who would."
Charles's face hardened.
"You are making this worse."
"For whom?"
"For yourself."
Richard leaned forward.
"You work for me."
Charles stood.
"Not anymore."
Richard's confidence cracked.
"You're quitting?"
"I'm withdrawing."
"In the middle of an emergency hearing?"
"Before I become a witness to decisions I advised you not to make."
Richard's face drained.
"What does that mean?"
Charles buttoned his jacket.
"It means you should find a lawyer you are willing to listen to."
He walked toward the door.
Richard called after him.
"Charles."
The attorney stopped.
"What?"
"You can't tell Harrison anything."
Charles looked back.
"Attorney-client privilege protects your legal communications."
Then his expression turned grim.
"It does not make me your accomplice."
The door closed.
Richard remained alone.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa appeared.
Did she sign?
Richard stared at it.
Then another message arrived.
And did you get her passport?
Richard deleted the preview from his screen.
May you like
But he did not know that somewhere else in the city, a cloud backup had already preserved it.
