Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT AFTER

Rose Harrington weighed four pounds, three ounces.
She had dark hair.
Tiny fingers.
And lungs strong enough to surprise the neonatal team.
She breathed with assistance at first.
She lay beneath warm lights in the NICU with sensors attached to skin that looked too delicate for the world outside her mother.
Harrison stood beside the incubator after midnight.
His hands were bandaged.
His suit had been replaced by hospital scrubs someone found for him.
He looked through the clear wall at his niece.
"Your mother fought for you before you even existed."
Rose moved one hand.
Harrison's voice cracked.
"So you fight now."
Khloe remained unconscious in intensive care.
Doctors expected her to wake.
They could not say exactly when.
The phrase expected became Harrison's only source of oxygen.
At one in the morning, Detective Lena Ortiz arrived.
She had interviewed witnesses at the courthouse.
Harrison met her in a family room.
"Tell me."
Ortiz opened a notebook.
"Multiple witnesses saw Vanessa Kensington make physical contact with your sister immediately before the fall."
"Three describe a two-handed shove."
"Security footage covers part of the top landing."
"A news camera captured another angle."
Harrison's expression did not move.
"Arrest?"
"She is in custody."
"Charges will be determined with the prosecutor."
"Likely aggravated assault-related counts depending on medical findings and intent evidence."
Harrison's eyes hardened.
"Pregnancy was obvious."
"Very."
Ortiz looked at him.
"I know who you are."
"Then you know I am not going to interfere with your case."
"Good."
"Because I need something from you."
Harrison waited.
"Do not investigate the shove yourself."
He almost smiled.
"I have a divorce case full of overlapping evidence."
"That is different."
"Keep it different."
Harrison nodded.
"Understood."
Ortiz continued.
"Richard Harrington is not under arrest."
Harrison's face changed slightly.
"Why would he be?"
"Witnesses heard part of the argument."
"There may be evidence Vanessa believed she was acting under pressure Richard helped create."
"That does not make him legally responsible for her shove."
"But we are reviewing communications."
Harrison leaned back.
"Vanessa confessed to the ultrasound threat yesterday."
Ortiz nodded.
"We have her statement."
"And she alleged Richard encouraged her to pressure Khloe generally."
"Correct."
"That is one reason we are collecting devices."
Harrison's phone buzzed.
Mara.
He ignored it.
Ortiz stood.
"Your sister is alive."
Harrison looked toward the ICU hallway.
"Yes."
"Try to stay her brother tonight."
The advice irritated him because it was correct.
At two-thirty, Richard arrived at the hospital.
Security stopped him at the private ICU entrance.
He demanded to see Khloe.
Harrison heard his voice from down the hall.
For one second, everything inside him wanted to walk toward Richard and forget every rule he had ever lived by.
Instead, he called hospital security administration.
"Khloe has an attorney and medical proxy."
"No access unless physicians determine it is appropriate and unless he follows security instructions."
Richard saw Harrison through the glass doors.
"Harry."
Harrison walked closer but remained on the other side.
"How is she?"
Richard asked.
Harrison stared at him.
"Alive."
Richard closed his eyes.
Relief moved across his face.
"The baby?"
"Alive."
Richard pressed one hand against the glass.
"I need to see them."
"No."
"She's my wife."
Harrison's expression did not change.
"That sentence has done enough damage."
Richard flinched.
"I didn't push her."
"I didn't say you did."
"Vanessa lost control."
"Yes."
"You think I wanted this?"
Harrison stepped closer to the glass.
"I think you spent two years teaching Vanessa that Khloe was an obstacle instead of a human being."
Richard went pale.
"That does not mean I wanted her hurt."
"Intent will matter in every courtroom that asks about your conduct."
"Tonight it does not matter to me at all."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"You blame me for everything."
"No."
Harrison's voice became quiet.
"That is the worst part."
"There are things I can prove you did, and I do not need to blame you for anything else."
He turned away.
Richard called after him.
"Harrison."
Harrison stopped.
"Tell Khloe I was here."
He did not turn.
"If she wakes up and asks, I will tell her the truth."
Richard left before dawn.
He went directly to Martin Keane's office.
Martin was already there.
"Vanessa needs a lawyer," Richard said.
Martin stared at him.
"She has one."
"A criminal lawyer."
"Paige will refer her."
Richard paced.
"This cannot become a story that I caused."
Martin's face hardened.
"Your wife is in intensive care."
Richard stopped.
"I know."
"Your daughter is in the NICU."
"I know."
"And your first concern is narrative?"
Richard looked away.
"My first concern is that everyone will say I pushed Vanessa into this."
Martin stared at him for a long moment.
"Did you?"
"No."
"Did you tell her Khloe was the reason her life was falling apart?"
Richard said nothing.
"Did you blame Khloe for the frozen penthouse?"
Silence.
"Did you tell Vanessa the lawsuit was destroying you?"
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Those are words."
Martin leaned forward.
"Words are usually where cases begin."
By morning, the courthouse video had spread online.
News outlets blurred the most disturbing frames.
The sequence was still unmistakable.
Vanessa followed Khloe.
They argued.
Khloe pulled away.
Vanessa shoved.
Khloe disappeared down the steps.
Public sympathy shifted instantly.
People who had treated the divorce as billionaire gossip now saw a pregnant woman falling down courthouse stairs.
The story changed categories.
Richard's board issued a statement expressing concern for Khloe and the baby.
Keystone Civic Futures announced an internal review.
Vanessa was formally charged and held pending a bail hearing.
Her attorney advised silence.
She ignored that advice once.
From a holding room, she called Richard.
The call was recorded by the facility.
"You said you would fix this."
Richard's voice came through thinly.
"Vanessa, listen to your lawyer."
"You said Khloe was ruining everything."
"Do not talk about this on the phone."
"You said if she stopped fighting, we could be a family."
"Stop."
Vanessa began crying.
"I didn't mean for her to fall."
"I just wanted her to stop looking at me like that."
Richard closed his eyes.
"Say nothing else."
Vanessa's voice turned bitter.
"Of course."
"Now you're protecting yourself."
"I am trying to protect you too."
"No."
"You stopped protecting me the second Harrison found the money."
The call ended.
Neither Richard nor Vanessa knew prosecutors would later obtain it.
At noon, Khloe opened her eyes.
Harrison was asleep in a chair beside her bed.
The movement of her hand woke him.
He stood instantly.
"Khloe?"
Her eyes struggled to focus.
She tried to speak.
No sound came at first.
Harrison pressed the call button.
"Don't move."
Khloe's lips formed one word.
"Baby?"
Harrison's entire face broke.
He leaned closer.
"She's alive."
Khloe closed her eyes.
A tear slid toward her temple.
"Girl?"
"A girl."
"Rose?"
Harrison laughed through tears.
"Rose."
Khloe tried to smile.
Then memory returned.
Her expression changed.
"Vanessa."
Harrison's face became calm again.
"In custody."
Khloe looked at him.
"Richard?"
Harrison paused.
"He came to the hospital."
"He did not see you."
Khloe stared at the ceiling.
Then she whispered,
May you like
"Good."
