Chapter 12 - THE BREAK BETWEEN THEM

Vanessa waited until Richard came to her apartment that evening.
He arrived carrying takeout from her favorite restaurant and a box containing a gold bracelet for the baby.
She did not let him kiss her.
"Did you leak Khloe's medical history?"
Richard stopped.
The takeout bag remained in his hand.
"What?"
"Her miscarriage counseling."
"Her private appointments."
"Did you give that to a public relations consultant?"
Richard set the bag down slowly.
"Who told you that?"
Vanessa laughed once.
"So yes."
"It's complicated."
"It is not complicated."
"You used her dead babies against her."
Richard's face hardened.
"Do not make this moral now."
Vanessa stared at him.
"Excuse me?"
"You laughed at those messages too."
The accusation landed.
Vanessa's mouth opened.
No words came.
Richard continued.
"You do not get to stand there and pretend you were some innocent outsider."
"You knew I was married."
"You came into my house."
"You wanted the penthouse."
"You wanted Khloe gone."
Vanessa's face flushed.
"I wanted you to leave a marriage you said was already dead."
"You wanted the lifestyle."
"And you wanted me."
"At the time."
Silence.
Vanessa's entire expression changed.
Richard realized what he had said.
"That's not what I meant."
"At the time?"
"Vanessa."
"Get out."
He stepped toward her.
"Listen to me."
"No."
She backed away.
"You are doing to me exactly what you did to her."
"That is ridiculous."
"Is it?"
"You told me she was unstable."
"Now I know you created the story."
"You told me she controlled you with pregnancy grief."
"Now I know you were moving her money while she was grieving."
"You told me the house was practically yours."
"It is mortgaged."
"You told me the penthouse was protected."
"It was bought partly with her inheritance."
Richard's voice rose.
"Do you think Harrison cares about truth?"
"He cares about winning."
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"And you care about what?"
Richard said nothing.
The silence answered.
Vanessa took off the necklace he had given her in St. Barts and threw it onto the counter.
"Leave."
Richard picked it up.
"Do not be dramatic."
Vanessa laughed through tears.
"You are unbelievable."
"I am seven months pregnant with your son, and you just told me you wanted me at the time."
Richard lowered his voice.
"I am under enormous pressure."
"So was Khloe."
The sentence stopped him.
Vanessa looked almost shocked by her own words.
Then she opened the door.
"Go."
Richard left.
He did not know Vanessa had placed her phone on the kitchen counter with the voice memo application running after his first evasive answer.
She did not know whether the recording would ever matter.
She only knew she no longer trusted him to remember conversations honestly.
Across town, Harrison was reviewing Jenna's affidavit when a federal prosecutor he knew from previous cases returned his call.
Harrison spoke carefully.
He described financial records that appeared unrelated to domestic litigation.
He offered preserved copies through proper channels.
He did not exaggerate.
He did not speculate.
The prosecutor listened.
"Send the referral package."
"We will review independently."
Harrison hung up.
Mara looked at him.
"And now?"
"Now we stop touching that piece unless they ask."
"Domestic case stays domestic."
Khloe entered carrying tea.
"What piece?"
Harrison told her.
She sat slowly.
"Federal?"
"Potentially."
"Will Richard know?"
"Not from us."
Khloe nodded.
"Good."
The next hearing concerned temporary support, possession of the estate, and discovery enforcement.
This time, reporters filled the hallway.
Richard arrived through a side entrance.
Vanessa did not accompany him.
Inside court, Harrison presented evidence showing that Richard's sworn entity disclosure omitted three companies.
Martin Keane looked furious.
Judge Mercer looked worse.
"Mr. Harrington," she said, "I ordered a list of entities in which you hold direct or beneficial control."
Richard stood beside counsel.
"My accountants prepared the response."
"That was not my question."
Richard swallowed.
"Yes, Your Honor."
"Three entities were omitted."
"I was not aware."
Harrison rose.
"Your Honor, one omitted entity owns a Cayman account into which two point one million dollars was transferred after service of the divorce complaint."
Martin stood.
"Objection."
Judge Mercer looked at him.
"On what basis?"
Martin sat back down.
The judge turned to Richard.
"I am beginning to lose patience."
Harrison requested broader restraints.
The judge granted most of them.
She also ordered Richard to pay interim legal expenses from non-disputed funds because the complexity of the financial structure had made ordinary divorce litigation impossible.
Richard looked humiliated.
Khloe did not feel triumphant.
She felt tired.
Outside court, a reporter shouted,
"Mrs. Harrington, are you trying to destroy your husband's company?"
Khloe stopped.
Harrison touched her elbow.
She looked at him.
He shook his head slightly.
Keep walking.
She did.
Then another reporter yelled,
"Is Vanessa Kensington carrying Richard Harrington's son?"
Khloe did not turn.
Richard did.
That photograph ran on every entertainment site by evening.
His angry face.
Khloe walking away.
Harrison between them.
The image made Richard look exactly like what he feared appearing to be.
A man losing control.
At Harrington Commercial, the board called an emergency meeting.
Two independent directors wanted Richard temporarily removed from direct control of company finances pending the audit.
Richard entered the boardroom and saw Daniel Price seated at the far end beside outside counsel.
He stopped.
"What is he doing here?"
The board chair, Amelia Grant, answered.
"Providing information."
Richard stared at Daniel.
"You traitor."
Amelia's voice cut across the room.
"Sit down, Richard."
He turned toward her.
Few people spoke to him that way.
"This is my company."
"It is a corporation."
"And today you own less than a majority of the voting control present in this room."
Richard's face changed.
For the next ninety minutes, outside counsel described disclosure failures.
Audit concerns.
Related-party transactions.
Potential misuse of company funds.
Richard denied wrongdoing.
He blamed Daniel.
He blamed accounting systems.
He blamed the divorce.
He blamed Harrison.
Then Amelia asked one question.
"Did company money pay for personal expenses related to Vanessa Kensington?"
Richard looked around the table.
No friendly faces remained.
"Some expenses may have been allocated incorrectly."
Amelia closed the folder.
"That is enough."
The board voted eight to three to place Richard on temporary administrative leave as CEO pending the audit.
Richard did not speak during the elevator ride down.
When he reached the lobby, dozens of employees looked away.
His badge still opened the front door.
But for the first time in his adult life, Harrington Commercial no longer belonged to him in practice.
He got into his car and called Vanessa.
She did not answer.
He called again.
Voicemail.
He called Khloe.
Blocked.
Then he called Harrison.
Harrison answered.
"Cole."
Richard's breathing was heavy.
"You wanted this."
Harrison sat back.
"Wanted what?"
"My company."
"Your reputation."
"Everything."
Harrison's voice remained calm.
"I did not make your board remove you."
"You set this in motion."
"No, Richard."
"You did."
A long silence followed.
Richard's voice dropped.
"This is not over."
Harrison looked through the glass wall of his office toward Khloe.
She was reviewing nursery furniture on her laptop for the first time in weeks.
"You're right."
His voice became cold.
"It isn't."
That night, Vanessa listened again to the recording she had made.
One line stood out.
Richard's voice.
You wanted Khloe gone.
Then another.
I am under enormous pressure.
Then her own voice.
So was Khloe.
Vanessa stopped the recording.
She stared at her reflection in the dark window.
For the first time, she did not see the woman who had won.
She saw the woman standing in the exact place Khloe had occupied months earlier.
