Chapter 15 - THIRTY STEPS

Thursday began with rain.

By ten, the clouds had thinned and the white marble outside the Montgomery County Courthouse shone beneath a cold autumn sun.

Khloe arrived through the side entrance exactly as Harrison demanded.

She wore a navy maternity dress under a matching coat.

Her hair was pulled back loosely.

One hand rested automatically over the round curve of her belly.

Rose had been active all morning.

Harrison noticed every time Khloe paused.

"Contraction?"

"Kick."

"You sure?"

"Harry."

"I'm asking."

"She's kicking."

He looked unconvinced.

"You were less annoying when I was twelve."

"You were easier to carry when you were twelve."

Khloe laughed.

It was the last ordinary laugh Harrison would hear from her that day.

The conference itself lasted less than two hours.

Judge Mercer addressed discovery disputes.

She set dates for the financial trial.

She reviewed custody procedures for after Rose's birth.

And she warned both parties against direct contact or public retaliation.

Richard sat at the opposite table.

He barely looked at Khloe.

His attorneys did the speaking.

He looked exhausted and angry.

At the end, Harrison and Martin approached the bench for a scheduling issue.

Khloe stepped into the hallway.

She intended to use the restroom and wait near the private elevator.

Then she saw Vanessa.

Vanessa stood near a marble column wearing a cream coat.

She had given birth less than two weeks earlier.

She looked pale and too thin.

Paige Nolan was several yards away speaking to a detective.

Khloe stopped.

Vanessa saw her.

For a moment, neither woman moved.

Then Vanessa walked closer.

"I gave the statement."

Khloe kept her distance.

"Good."

"Police know about the note."

"Good."

Vanessa looked toward the courtroom doors.

"Richard knows I talked."

Khloe frowned.

"Then stay with your lawyer."

"I am."

Vanessa hesitated.

"Khloe, I am sorry."

Khloe's expression hardened.

"You have said that."

"I know."

"It doesn't fix it."

"I know."

Khloe stepped toward the elevator.

Vanessa followed.

"Please."

Khloe turned.

"What do you want from me?"

"I don't know."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Maybe I want you to say I am not a terrible person."

Khloe stared at her.

"I cannot give you that."

Vanessa flinched.

Khloe continued, quieter.

"You did terrible things."

"So did Richard."

"That doesn't erase your choices."

Vanessa's shame turned instantly into anger.

Khloe saw the transformation.

"You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Talk like you are above everyone."

Khloe stepped back.

"Vanessa, go to your lawyer."

"You think because Harrison wins cases and you wear quiet dresses and talk softly, you are better than me."

"I did not say that."

"You didn't have to."

People began looking over.

A clerk slowed near the doorway.

Khloe lowered her voice.

"This is not the place."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

"You get to decide the place too."

Khloe turned away.

"I'm leaving."

Paige called from across the hall.

"Vanessa."

Vanessa ignored her.

She followed Khloe toward the main staircase because the private elevator doors had just closed.

Khloe should have waited.

She knew that later.

Harrison knew it later.

Everyone would replay that small decision until it became unbearable.

But in the moment, Khloe simply wanted air.

She stepped through the courthouse doors and reached the top landing.

The staircase opened below her in a long sweep of white marble.

Lawyers moved up and down.

Reporters gathered near the sidewalk.

A few cameras turned at the sight of her.

Khloe stopped.

She did not want to walk through them.

Vanessa came through the doors behind her.

"Khloe."

Khloe did not turn.

"Please leave me alone."

"You don't get to say everything and walk away."

Khloe turned slowly.

One protective hand covered her stomach.

"I have nothing else to say to you."

Vanessa's face twisted.

"You took everything."

Khloe stared at her.

"What?"

"The penthouse."

"Richard."

"My reputation."

"Now the police are treating me like a criminal because of one stupid note."

Khloe's disbelief became anger.

"I took Richard?"

"You had him for six years."

"He came to me because you made him miserable."

Khloe stepped back.

"Do not do this."

"Why?"

"Because you confessed yesterday and now you are blaming me again."

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"You don't understand what he told me."

"Then be angry at him."

"I am."

"Then go be angry somewhere else."

Vanessa reached for Khloe's arm.

Khloe pulled away.

"Do not touch me."

The words were sharp enough that several people turned fully toward them.

Paige emerged from the courthouse doors.

"Vanessa, step away."

Vanessa looked around.

She saw the stares.

The cameras.

The lawyers.

The woman she had spent months believing would eventually disappear.

Something broke.

"You ruined everything."

Khloe's face went still.

"No."

"Richard did."

Vanessa shoved her.

Hard.

Khloe's heel slipped off the edge of the top step.

Her eyes widened.

For one suspended instant, her body seemed to hang between balance and gravity.

Then she fell backward.

A scream ripped through the crowd.

Khloe struck the first marble step.

Then the second.

Then another.

Her coat opened as she rolled.

One hand remained over her stomach until the force tore it away.

Thirty steps became one terrible blur of white stone and navy fabric.

At the bottom, Khloe stopped moving.

For one heartbeat, the courthouse entrance fell completely silent.

Then chaos erupted.

Someone screamed for an ambulance.

A clerk called security.

A reporter dropped a microphone.

At the top of the staircase, Vanessa stood frozen.

Both hands remained extended.

Her face had gone white.

Richard emerged through the courthouse doors behind Harrison.

He looked down.

Khloe lay twisted against the marble below.

Blood spread across the navy fabric near her legs.

Harrison moved before anyone else.

He ran.

He did not remember touching the stairs.

He only remembered reaching his sister and dropping to his knees so hard that his palms split against the stone.

"Khloe."

His voice cracked.

She did not respond.

He touched the side of her face.

"Khloe, look at me."

Her eyelids fluttered.

"Stay with me."

His hands shook.

"Don't close your eyes."

Khloe struggled to focus.

Her trembling fingers reached for his lapel.

Blood stained the fabric.

"Harry."

Her voice was barely audible.

"I'm here."

Her hand moved weakly toward her stomach.

"The baby."

A painful breath escaped her.

"Please."

Tears filled her eyes.

"Save my baby."

Her fingers slipped away.

Her hand fell.

She stopped responding.

Something inside Harrison disappeared.

Not control.

Something warmer.

He lifted his head.

At the top of the staircase, Vanessa remained frozen.

Richard stood beside her.

He had not moved toward Khloe.

He had not taken one step.

He simply stared.

Harrison looked first at Vanessa.

Then at Richard.

He did not shout.

He did not threaten them.

His face became calm.

Terrifyingly calm.

That was the moment Vanessa understood prison might not be the worst thing ahead of her.

Because Harrison Cole did not react with rage.

He dismantled people with facts.

And now dozens of witnesses had seen exactly what happened.

Paramedics arrived within minutes.

They stabilized Khloe's neck.

They started an IV.

They monitored fetal heart tones.

One paramedic's expression changed when the monitor picked up distress.

"We need to move now."

Harrison climbed into the ambulance without asking permission.

Behind them, courthouse security separated Vanessa from the crowd.

A deputy placed her in a secured room pending police arrival.

Richard followed officers inside.

He kept repeating one sentence.

"It was an accident."

Paige Nolan stared at him.

"You did not see the contact."

Richard stopped.

"What?"

"You came through the doors after the argument started."

"Do not tell police what you did not personally see."

Richard looked at her as though he had forgotten she was Vanessa's lawyer.

"She didn't mean to do it."

Paige's face hardened.

"That is a different sentence."

At the hospital, Khloe went directly to surgery.

Harrison stood outside the operating suite with blood on his suit and his sister's fingerprints on his lapel.

Dr. Morris arrived at a run.

"What happened?"

Harrison tried to answer.

For the first time in his professional life, words failed him.

"She fell."

His voice broke.

"She was pushed."

Dr. Morris looked at the operating room doors.

"How far?"

"Thirty steps."

The doctor's face changed.

Then she disappeared inside.

Harrison sat alone beneath fluorescent lights.

He looked at his bloody hands.

A nurse offered bandages.

He did not move.

His phone rang continuously.

Lawyers.

Police.

Reporters.

Mara.

He answered none of them.

One hour passed.

Then another.

Finally, Dr. Morris emerged wearing surgical scrubs.

Harrison stood so fast the chair fell backward.

"Khloe?"

The doctor removed her cap.

"She has internal injuries and a serious concussion."

"We controlled the bleeding."

"She is stable for now."

Harrison's knees almost gave way.

"The baby?"

Dr. Morris took a breath.

"We had to deliver her."

Harrison stared.

"Rose?"

The doctor looked surprised by the name.

"A girl."

"Premature, but alive."

Harrison covered his face with both hands.

May you like

For the first time that day, he cried.
