Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO KEPT THE BOOKS

Daniel Price entered Harrison's office through a private garage entrance shortly after sunrise.

He looked ten years older than Khloe remembered.

His suit was wrinkled.

His eyes were red.

He carried no briefcase.

For a man who had spent three decades surrounded by money, he looked like someone who had abandoned everything except the clothes he was wearing.

Khloe stood when he entered.

Daniel stopped.

"Khloe."

She did not answer immediately.

He looked down.

"I'm sorry."

"For which part?"

Harrison glanced at her but did not interfere.

Daniel accepted the question.

"For knowing about Vanessa."

"For helping Richard move money before I understood where it was coming from."

"For not telling you when I should have."

Khloe crossed her arms.

"Did you know he was taking my trust distributions?"

Daniel's face tightened.

"Not at first."

"When did you know?"

"About eleven months ago."

The number landed heavily.

"And you stayed."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Daniel looked at Harrison.

Then back at Khloe.

"Cowardice, mostly."

She had expected excuses.

The direct answer disarmed her.

Daniel continued.

"Richard had tied compensation for half the executive team to deferred packages he controlled."

"My retirement was inside company structures."

"Lydia's health insurance."

"Our house line of credit."

"My son's graduate loans."

"Every time I considered walking away, I calculated what he could break."

Khloe's voice hardened.

"And while you calculated, he was breaking me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The word was barely audible.

Harrison stepped in.

"We are not here to absolve anyone."

"We are here to establish facts."

He placed a recorder on the table.

"Daniel, you have independent counsel?"

"Yes."

"And your attorney advised you to cooperate truthfully?"

"Yes."

"Then start with Keystone Civic Futures."

Daniel sat.

For the next three hours, the architecture of Richard's hidden financial system emerged piece by piece.

Keystone Civic Futures was legitimate on paper.

It funded urban education programs.

Redevelopment studies.

Civic conferences.

But Richard used donations to Keystone as a junction.

Money entered labeled as charitable contributions.

Consulting firms later received grants.

Those firms paid advisers.

Some advisers were connected to municipal officials who controlled zoning approvals.

Others were connected to politically influential donors.

Daniel did not claim every payment was illegal.

He could not.

But several transactions were impossible to explain honestly.

"Eastbank was the worst," Daniel said.

Harrison leaned forward.

"Why?"

"The site had contamination problems."

"Approval stalled."

"Richard promised investors groundbreaking within the quarter."

"Then six million moved to Keystone."

"Three weeks later, two consulting companies received grants."

"One was controlled by the brother-in-law of a redevelopment board member."

"The other was linked to a former campaign manager for a county official."

Harrison's expression did not change.

"Did Richard direct the payments?"

"Yes."

"Do you have written proof?"

"Some."

"Enough?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Not enough by itself."

Mara interrupted.

"What about the eighteen point four million?"

Daniel rubbed his face.

"That includes Eastbank and several unrelated transfers."

"Some was diverted to cover losses in another project."

"Some went offshore."

"Some paid Vanessa's expenses."

Khloe's head lifted.

"What expenses?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Apartment."

"Travel."

"Medical bills."

"The penthouse."

"A trust Richard intended to establish for their son."

Khloe's hand moved instinctively over her stomach.

"With my money?"

Daniel's silence answered.

Khloe stood and walked toward the window.

New York moved below as though nothing in the room mattered.

She pressed one hand against the glass.

"He used money my mother left me to build a future for another family."

Daniel spoke softly.

"Part of it."

Khloe turned.

"Do not soften it."

"I wasn't."

"Then say it clearly."

Daniel met her eyes.

"Richard used funds traceable to your inheritance to support Vanessa Kensington and to purchase assets intended for their household."

Khloe nodded.

"Thank you."

She sat again.

"Now keep going."

Daniel looked surprised.

So did Harrison.

Khloe's voice was steady.

"I have cried enough over facts that do not change when I cry."

Daniel continued.

By lunch, Harrison had enough to refer certain financial information to federal counsel for independent review.

He did not threaten Richard with it.

He did not mention it in settlement discussions.

He simply preserved it.

At two, Martin Keane called.

"Richard wants mediation."

Harrison leaned back.

"Already?"

"Do not enjoy yourself."

"I never enjoy work."

"You're lying."

Harrison almost smiled.

"What is he offering?"

Martin named a number.

Harrison looked at Khloe across the room.

"No."

Martin sighed.

"You didn't ask her."

"The offer is less than the amount we can already trace out of her separate trust."

Silence.

Martin's voice changed.

"What trust?"

Harrison said nothing.

That silence did more than any accusation could have.

"Harrison."

"Tell Richard we will respond in writing."

He ended the call.

Khloe looked at him.

"He didn't know?"

"Martin didn't."

"Which means Richard is hiding facts from his own attorney."

Mara shook her head.

"That always ends beautifully."

Across town, Martin Keane placed his phone down slowly.

Richard sat on the other side of the table.

"Well?"

Martin looked at him.

"What trust?"

Richard's face changed.

"What?"

"Harrison says he can trace more money from Khloe's separate trust than the amount you just offered in settlement."

Richard looked away.

Martin stood.

"What trust?"

"Her mother left one."

"Did you move money from it?"

"It was invested."

"That was not my question."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Funds were pooled."

Martin stared at him.

"Without her consent?"

"I managed household finances."

"Without her consent?"

Richard said nothing.

Martin walked toward the door.

"Where are you going?"

"To call ethics counsel before I say something career-ending."

"You're my lawyer."

Martin turned.

"Then stop making me discover material facts from the opposing lawyer."

When Martin left, Richard picked up a glass and threw it against the wall.

The glass shattered.

His assistant appeared in the doorway.

"Mr. Harrington?"

"Get out."

She disappeared instantly.

Richard called Vanessa.

She answered from a prenatal appointment.

"The doctor says the baby is almost five pounds."

Richard barely heard her.

"Daniel is talking."

Silence.

"Daniel Price?"

"Yes."

"I thought you handled him."

Richard's voice turned cold.

"I did not handle him."

"I told him to take time away."

"That sounds like handling him."

"Vanessa, listen to me."

"Did you ever text him about the penthouse?"

"Probably."

"Probably?"

"Richard, I am not an accountant."

"I don't catalog every message."

"Delete nothing."

Vanessa laughed once.

"Now you sound like your lawyer."

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

Her voice dropped.

"I am done living like a secret."

"The baby is coming soon."

"You promised me a home."

"You promised me your name."

"You promised Khloe would be gone before anyone knew I was pregnant."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Not now."

"Then when?"

"When Harrison stops tearing apart every account I have."

Vanessa went silent.

Then she asked,

"What if Khloe just stopped fighting?"

Richard opened his eyes.

"What does that mean?"

"It means she is doing this because Harrison is encouraging her."

"If she believed fighting would hurt the baby, maybe she would stop."

Richard's face hardened.

"Do not contact her."

"I'm not an idiot."

"Vanessa."

"I said I heard you."

The call ended.

Richard stared at his phone.

For the first time, he looked frightened not only of Harrison.

He looked frightened of Vanessa too.

That evening, Khloe returned to her apartment and found a white envelope beneath the door.

No stamp.

No courier label.

Someone had delivered it by hand.

Inside was a copy of her latest ultrasound photograph.

Khloe's blood went cold.

The image had been taken three days earlier.

On the back, someone had written,

Stress is dangerous for babies.

Stop before you lose another one.

Khloe dropped the photograph.

For several seconds, she could not move.

Then she called Harrison.

He arrived with building security and police within minutes.

He read the message without speaking.

Khloe stood in the kitchen, shaking with rage.

"She mentioned my miscarriages."

Harrison placed the note into an evidence sleeve.

"We do not know who wrote it."

"You know."

"I suspect."

"That is different."

Khloe turned on him.

"My ultrasound was private."

"How did anyone get it?"

That question shifted the room.

Harrison looked at the image again.

"Where was the original?"

"My patient portal."

"Anywhere else?"

Khloe thought.

Then her face drained.

"Richard's email was still listed as the family contact."

Harrison's expression became lethal.

"We change every medical authorization tonight."

Khloe looked at the handwritten threat.

"And then?"

May you like

"Then we find out who thought threatening a pregnant woman with her dead children was a good idea."
