Chapter 14 - THE DRAWING

Khloe had forgotten the old blueprints existed.
They were stored in a tube inside a rented archive unit Harrison arranged after she left the estate.
Most were personal projects.
Renovation sketches.
House plans.
Concept drawings from her years as a draftsman.
But one tube contained plans Richard had brought home nearly four years earlier.
He had asked Khloe to review a luxury tower layout unofficially because the project architect was behind schedule.
Khloe had spent an entire weekend marking circulation problems and structural conflicts.
The project was Eastbank.
When Mara compared Khloe's old plans to the final filed plans, she noticed something strange.
A service level shown in Khloe's copy disappeared from later public drawings.
The level contained secure storage rooms adjacent to a private parking entrance.
Khloe frowned.
"Buildings don't lose floors."
Mara looked at her.
"Could it have been redesigned?"
"Yes."
"But then structural sections would change."
"Mechanical routing would change."
"Elevator stops would change."
"The later drawings still account for the height."
Harrison joined them.
"What are you saying?"
Khloe pointed at the section.
"There is a floor in this building that effectively vanished from the public set."
Mara searched project records.
The hidden level appeared in contractor billing.
Electrical work.
Security access.
Climate control.
Specialty vault doors.
Harrison's expression sharpened.
"What did they store there?"
Khloe shook her head.
"No idea."
They did not investigate physically.
That was not their job.
They forwarded the information through counsel to the appropriate investigators handling Eastbank.
Two days later, federal agents executed a warrant at a secure storage level in the development.
The news broke before noon.
Reporters described boxes of corporate records being removed.
No charges were announced.
No conclusions were public.
But Richard knew exactly who had recognized the missing floor.
Khloe.
His wife.
The woman he had dismissed as someone who understood neither accounting nor business.
That afternoon, Khloe received flowers at her apartment.
White roses.
The same flowers from her wedding.
No sender name.
Only a card.
You always did notice details.
Khloe photographed the card and called Harrison.
"Do not touch anything else."
"I know."
"Security is coming up."
"Harry."
"What?"
"This one feels like Richard."
Harrison was silent.
"Maybe."
"You hate that word."
"I love accurate words."
The florist records later showed the order had been placed online using a prepaid card.
The IP address traced to public Wi-Fi.
Again, nothing definitive.
The uncertainty began to feel intentional.
Someone wanted Khloe to know she was being watched while leaving no clean line back to the sender.
Dr. Morris became concerned when Khloe's blood pressure increased again.
"You are eight months pregnant."
"I know."
"No, you know in the abstract."
"I need you to behave like you know physically."
Khloe looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
"No long courthouse days unless unavoidable."
"No standing for hours."
"No skipping meals because attorneys forgot humans eat."
"And someone travels with you."
Khloe smiled faintly.
"My brother will enjoy that instruction."
"Good."
"Let him be annoying."
The final pretrial conference in the divorce case was scheduled for Thursday.
Harrison wanted Khloe to attend remotely.
Khloe refused.
"I want to be there."
"You heard your doctor."
"She said unless unavoidable."
"This is avoidable."
"Not to me."
Harrison folded his arms.
"Why?"
Khloe looked at him.
"Because every important thing in this case has happened in rooms where Richard assumed I would stay quiet."
"I want him to see me when he finally has to answer."
Harrison considered that.
"You sit."
"I sit."
"You leave the second you feel anything unusual."
"Yes."
"Driver door to door."
"Fine."
"No courthouse steps."
Khloe smiled.
"Harry, there is an elevator."
"Good."
Neither of them knew how cruel that sentence would become.
The night before the conference, Vanessa called Khloe.
Khloe almost declined.
Then she answered.
"What do you want?"
Vanessa's voice sounded tired.
"I need to tell you something about Richard."
Khloe sat down.
"Go through your lawyer."
"Paige is sending it to Harrison too."
"But I wanted you to hear this from me."
Khloe waited.
Vanessa continued.
"He came here after the subpoenas."
"We argued."
"I recorded it."
"He told me I wanted you gone."
Khloe's jaw tightened.
"You did."
"I know."
The admission sounded different now.
Not defensive.
Ashamed.
"He also said something else."
"What?"
"He said if things became bad enough, everyone would blame me because I was the mistress."
Khloe went still.
"Did you record that?"
"Yes."
"Why are you telling me?"
Vanessa was silent for a moment.
Then she said,
"Because I think he has been using both of us differently."
Khloe almost laughed.
"That realization came late."
"I know."
"You called me dead weight."
"I know."
"You mocked my miscarriages."
Vanessa's breath caught.
"I know."
"You entered my house."
"Yes."
"And you threatened me?"
Vanessa went silent.
Khloe's pulse jumped.
"Vanessa."
"I went to your building."
The confession came quietly.
"I left the ultrasound note."
Khloe stopped breathing.
Vanessa began speaking faster.
"I didn't mean it the way it sounded."
"How else could it sound?"
Khloe's voice shook with anger.
"You wrote that I could lose another baby."
"I was furious."
"Richard said you were dragging everything out."
"He said stress would make you settle."
"I thought if you got scared, you would stop."
Khloe stood despite herself.
"You used my dead children to scare me."
"Yes."
Vanessa began crying.
"I am sorry."
"Do not cry to me."
Khloe's voice turned cold.
"You had a choice."
"You walked into my building."
"You wrote the note."
"You slid it under my door."
"That was not Richard's hand."
"It was yours."
Vanessa sobbed once.
"I know."
Khloe closed her eyes.
Her daughter moved inside her.
"Tell your lawyer."
"I did."
"Tell the police."
"Paige is arranging it."
Khloe sat again.
"Then why call me?"
Vanessa's answer was almost a whisper.
"Because tomorrow I am going to testify that Richard encouraged me to pressure you."
Khloe looked toward the dark window.
"Are you doing that because it is true or because he abandoned you?"
Vanessa did not answer immediately.
"Both can be true."
Khloe hated that she agreed.
Before ending the call, Vanessa said one more thing.
"Be careful tomorrow."
Khloe frowned.
"Why?"
"Richard is angry."
"At you?"
"At everyone."
"He thinks Harrison destroyed his company."
Khloe looked toward the locked apartment door.
"Richard isn't the person who scares me right now."
Vanessa became silent.
Khloe added,
"You are."
May you like
Then she ended the call.
