Chapter 7 - The Blue Room

Dante replayed the call three times.
Each time, the same six words cut through him.
"Daddy, the blue room is open."
Clara stood beside the chapel wall with dirt on her knees and Sophia's pink hair clip clenched in her hand.
The detectives from Westchester had not arrived yet.
Dante did not intend to wait for them.
He sent two men after Mercer.
He sent another team to sweep every Vancini property with a room painted blue.
That produced twenty-three possibilities in less than ten minutes.
Clara stared at the list on his phone.
"Too many."
Dante knew it.
"Sophia said the blue room as if I should understand."
"Maybe you should."
He looked at her.
"I don't."
"Then Elena did."
Clara held up the blue key marked 11-42.
"The clue came from something connected to her."
Dante's eyes moved toward the underground archive.
"The files."
They went back below the chapel.
Elias joined by video call while one of Dante's guards photographed every folder before anyone moved it.
Clara searched labels for anything involving blue.
Bluewater Development.
Blue Crest Capital.
Blue Harbor Logistics.
Too many companies.
Too many family entities.
Then Dante pulled a thin folder from the bottom cabinet.
It had no printed label.
Only two handwritten words.
BLUE ROOM.
Inside was a single property deed.
The address belonged to a townhouse on East Seventy-Third Street.
Dante stared at it.
"Elena's grandmother owned this place."
"Who owns it now?"
He turned the page.
A trust.
Rinaldi Private Holdings.
Vincent.
Clara felt her pulse jump.
"Would Sophia know it?"
Dante nodded slowly.
"Elena took her there when she was little."
"Why?"
"I thought they visited family storage."
He looked at the trust name again.
"Apparently I didn't know half of what Elena was doing."
They left the chapel with the files under armed guard.
Dante ordered the townhouse watched but not entered.
"If Sophia is inside, I don't want anyone panicking."
Clara sat beside him in the back seat this time.
His driver handled the road.
Dante watched live camera feeds on a tablet.
The townhouse looked ordinary.
Five stories of pale limestone.
Black iron railings.
Curtains closed.
No visible guards.
No vehicles waiting outside.
A delivery cyclist passed twice.
A woman walked a terrier down the block.
Nothing moved at the house.
That made Clara nervous.
"Who uses it?"
"No one, officially."
"And unofficially?"
"We're about to find out."
Elias called again.
"I found an old utility account for the address."
Dante put him on speaker.
"Name?"
"Elena Vancini."
Dante went silent.
"Canceled when?"
"Two days after her death."
"By who?"
"Vincent Rinaldi's office."
Clara closed her eyes for a moment.
Every road kept leading back to Vincent.
They reached Manhattan at 12:26 p.m.
Dante's team had entered the building next door and placed a small camera on the shared rooftop.
One rear window on the townhouse's fourth floor was open half an inch.
Blue curtains moved behind it.
Dante looked at Clara.
"That's the room."
The front door opened before they crossed the street.
A woman stepped out.
She was about forty-five, blond, elegant, and carrying a brown leather purse.
Dante stopped dead.
"Dr. Evelyn Shaw."
Clara looked at him.
"Sophia's doctor?"
"Former therapist."
Dr. Shaw walked calmly down the steps.
She did not see them until Dante said her name.
She froze.
"Dante."
Her face lost color.
"What are you doing here?"
He approached slowly.
"I was about to ask you the same question."
Shaw looked toward the townhouse.
Then toward the corner.
Clara recognized the calculation.
The woman was deciding whether to run.
"Where is Sophia?"
Shaw's eyes snapped back to Dante.
"Sophia?"
"Do not lie to me."
"I haven't seen Sophia in almost a year."
Clara watched her hands.
The doctor was twisting a gold ring around one finger.
"Then why were you inside?"
Shaw looked at Clara.
"Who is she?"
Dante ignored the question.
"Answer mine."
Shaw lowered her voice.
"Vincent called me this morning."
Clara and Dante exchanged a glance.
"He said old treatment files had been found and he wanted my help identifying them."
"At a secret townhouse?"
"I didn't know it was secret."
"Who let you in?"
Shaw hesitated.
Dante stepped closer.
"Who?"
"Detective Mercer."
Clara's stomach dropped.
Shaw saw her expression.
"What?"
Clara held up Sophia's hair clip.
"Mercer took Sophia."
The doctor's face changed so violently Clara believed her surprise.
"No."
Dante's voice went flat.
"Where is he?"
"He left ten minutes ago."
"With anyone?"
Shaw looked toward the house.
"I don't know."
Dante pulled out his phone.
"Clear the building."
His men moved.
Shaw grabbed his sleeve.
"Dante, wait."
He looked at her hand.
She let go.
"There is something you need to know before you go inside."
"Say it."
"The blue room was Elena's."
"I figured that out."
"No."
Shaw swallowed.
"I mean it was where she brought Sophia for treatment before Elena died."
Dante stared at her.
"Sophia was not in treatment before Elena died."
Shaw's eyes filled with shame.
"Yes, she was."
Dante did not move.
Clara felt the air change around him.
"For what?"
Shaw looked toward Clara as if asking permission to say it in front of her.
Dante answered for her.
"Speak."
"Night terrors."
"About what?"
"A man in the house."
Dante's face went still.
"What man?"
"Sophia never named him."
"She was four."
"She drew him."
Clara's pulse quickened.
"What did she draw?"
Shaw looked at her.
"A tall man with a black hand."
Dante frowned.
"Black hand?"
"That was how she represented a ring."
Clara thought of Julian's heavy silver ring with the black stone.
Dante did too.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Shaw's eyes lowered.
"Elena asked me not to."
"Why?"
"Because she said she needed proof first."
"Proof of what?"
Shaw opened her mouth.
A crash exploded from the fourth floor.
The blue curtains disappeared from the open window.
Dante's radio erupted.
"Movement upstairs."
A second voice shouted.
"Rear stairs!"
Dante ran for the townhouse.
Clara followed despite three separate orders not to.
They reached the fourth floor as two guards forced open a blue-painted door.
The room beyond looked like a child's playroom frozen in time.
Small desk.
Bookshelves.
A faded rug.
Crayons in glass jars.
Sophia's name was still written in pink letters above one shelf.
The rear window stood open.
No one was inside.
But a chair in the center of the room was warm.
A paper cup of milk sat beside it.
On the floor lay Sophia's second pink hair clip.
Clara picked it up.
"She was here."
Dante's jaw tightened.
One of the guards pointed toward the wall.
"Sir."
A section of blue wallpaper had been cut away.
Behind it was a built-in safe.
Its door hung open.
Empty shelves lined the interior.
Except for one cassette tape.
A handwritten label had been stuck across it.
SOPHIA - SESSION 7.
Shaw appeared in the doorway and stopped.
"That shouldn't be here."
Dante turned.
"Why?"
"Because Vincent ordered all of Sophia's pre-incident sessions destroyed."
"Why would he have authority to do that?"
Shaw looked sick.
"He said Elena had instructed it in writing."
Dante held the cassette up.
"Did she?"
Shaw did not answer.
Elias found an old cassette player in the townhouse basement.
The tape hissed when it started.
Then Shaw's younger voice filled the blue room.
"Sophia, can you tell me what happened when Mommy was downstairs?"
A child's voice answered.
Sophia.
Three years younger.
Soft and frightened.
"Uncle came in."
Dante stopped breathing.
On the tape, Shaw asked another question.
"Which uncle?"
There was a long silence.
Then little Sophia whispered.
"The shiny ring uncle."
Clara closed her eyes.
Julian.
The tape continued.
"What did he do?"
"He looked in Mommy's desk."
"Did Mommy know?"
"No."
"Did he see you?"
Another silence.
Then Sophia said something that made Dante grip the table.
"He told me good girls don't tell Daddy."
The tape clicked.
The recording ended.
Shaw covered her mouth.
"There were twelve sessions."
Dante looked at her.
"Where are the other eleven?"
"I thought they were destroyed."
Clara studied the open safe.
"Maybe somebody took them today."
Elias examined the lock.
"No forced entry."
"Who had the code?"
Shaw's face paled.
"Elena."
"Anyone else?"
"Vincent."
Dante turned toward the window.
Sirens sounded somewhere below.
Then his phone rang.
A video call.
Unknown number.
Dante answered.
Sophia appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in the back seat of a moving car.
A dark hood covered the head of the person beside her.
"Daddy."
Dante's voice went soft instantly.
"I'm here."
"Don't come."
"Where are you?"
Sophia looked toward someone off camera.
Then back at the phone.
"He says if you come, Clara goes away forever."
Clara went cold.
Dante's eyes snapped toward her.
A gloved hand reached into frame and took the phone from Sophia.
A distorted voice spoke.
"Now you understand the exchange."
Dante's face hardened.
"What exchange?"
May you like
"The waitress for your daughter."
The call ended.
