Chapter 16 - The Second Betrayal

Dante did not speak during the first five minutes of the drive home.

He did not need to.

Every man in the convoy understood what the black security screens meant.

Clara stared at Sophia's last drawing on her phone.

Red door.

Water.

Boat.

They had followed it to Elena's hidden war room.

And while they were gone, the house had gone dark again.

"Tomas was in Elena's photographs."

Clara said it quietly.

Marco sat across from her in the SUV.

"He worked for Vincent before Dante hired him."

Dante turned.

"What?"

Marco looked surprised.

"You didn't know?"

"No."

"He did contract security for Rinaldi Legal."

Dante's face hardened.

"When?"

"Years ago."

Julian, riding under guard in the rear vehicle, had already been questioned by phone.

He claimed Tomas had helped Mercer access Vancini properties during the cover-up.

Dante had trusted him for eight years.

That fact sat like poison in the car.

Elias came over the speaker.

"I found a backup feed."

Dante looked at the dashboard.

"Show me."

A grainy image appeared.

It came from a camera hidden inside an antique clock in the upstairs corridor.

Dante had installed it years earlier after a burglary threat and forgotten about it.

The camera ran on an independent network.

At 6:14 a.m., Tomas entered the corridor.

He carried a duffel bag.

At 6:16, he knocked on Dr. Shaw's guest room.

She opened the door.

Tomas said something.

No audio.

Shaw followed him downstairs.

At 6:19, Maria came out of Sophia's room.

Tomas returned alone.

He entered Sophia's bedroom.

Clara stopped breathing.

Dante gripped the seat.

Thirty seconds later, Tomas came back out.

Alone.

Clara exhaled.

Then at 6:22, the feed froze.

"That's all?"

"No."

Elias advanced to 6:31.

The camera came back.

Tomas crossed the hallway carrying the duffel bag again.

It looked heavier.

Dante's voice changed.

"No."

Clara looked at him.

"The bag isn't big enough."

He looked at her.

"For Sophia."

"No."

Clara zoomed in.

"But it could hold files."

Marco leaned closer.

"Or a laptop."

Dante called the house again.

This time Maria answered.

Her voice was shaky.

"Mr. Vancini?"

Dante closed his eyes for half a second.

"Sophia."

"She's here."

Everyone in the car exhaled.

"Put her on."

A moment later, Sophia's voice came through.

"Daddy?"

Dante's entire body softened.

"I'm here."

"Where's Clara?"

Clara leaned toward the phone.

"Right here."

"You coming back?"

"We're almost there."

Sophia whispered.

"Tomas took Mommy's box."

Dante looked at Clara.

"What box?"

"Blue one."

Clara's pulse jumped.

"Where was it?"

"Under my bed."

Nobody spoke.

Sophia had been sleeping above another piece of Elena's evidence for three years.

Dante's face filled with disbelief.

"Sweetheart, did you know it was there?"

"Mommy said don't open until blue door."

Clara thought of the blue room.

Sophia had opened the memory trail when she finally spoke.

Tomas had realized it too.

"What was inside?"

Sophia was silent.

Then:

"Papers."

"Anything else?"

"Little black book."

Marco swore under his breath.

Dante looked at him.

"S-7 ledger."

Marco nodded.

The missing ledger had not been in the harbor room.

Elena had hidden it under Sophia's bed.

Tomas had just stolen it.

Dante's voice hardened.

"Where is Tomas now?"

Maria answered.

"Gone."

"Evelyn?"

"She's in the kitchen."

"Lock the house."

"Already done."

"Do not open a door for anyone."

"I won't."

They arrived thirteen minutes later.

Dante went straight to Sophia.

Clara followed.

The little girl ran to both of them.

For the first time, she hugged her father first.

Dante closed his eyes and held her so carefully Clara had to look away.

Then Sophia reached for Clara too.

They stayed like that for several seconds.

A broken little triangle of people who had known each other for less than a week and somehow become the only stable thing in the room.

Dr. Shaw brought the blue box from Sophia's room.

Actually, what remained of it.

Tomas had left the wooden shell.

The hidden compartment beneath it was empty.

Sophia pointed at a scratch on the inside lid.

Clara leaned closer.

Elena had carved a message into the wood.

Not for Sophia.

For whoever found the box after the ledger disappeared.

S-7 IS A MAP, NOT THE MONEY.

Dante frowned.

"Map to what?"

Elias arrived thirty minutes later with Rebecca's files.

They compared her spreadsheets to the photographs from Elena's harbor room.

Sable Seven had transferred money through dozens of temporary companies.

The amounts were significant.

But they were too small to explain the risk Vincent had taken.

Then Elias noticed that each transaction reference ended in a six-digit number.

The numbers looked random.

Rebecca's spreadsheet had highlighted them in yellow.

Clara remembered something from her mother's letter.

"Original reconciliation."

Elias nodded.

"She was reconciling beneficiaries, not just money."

He rearranged the numbers as dates.

They became property acquisition dates.

Each date matched a Vancini asset.

Warehouses.

Apartment buildings.

Freight yards.

Hotels.

Dante stared.

"S-7 isn't moving cash."

Marco understood.

"It's moving ownership."

Elias pulled corporate records.

One by one, they found the pattern.

A legitimate Vancini property would be pledged as collateral through a shell entity.

The shell entity would default on paper.

A trust-controlled company would acquire the lien.

The asset stayed operational under the Vancini name.

But legal control shifted quietly.

Vincent had been stealing the empire piece by piece for almost a decade.

Using Dante's forged signatures.

Using Julian's cooperation.

Using Sable Seven as the map.

Dante's face hardened with every property.

"How much?"

Elias calculated.

"At least thirty-one percent of Vancini Holdings' underlying real estate exposure."

Marco swore.

"Value?"

"Roughly four point eight billion."

The room went silent.

Clara looked at Dante.

For a man who had probably seen enormous numbers every day, even he needed a moment.

"And if Vincent gets control of the Continuity Trust?"

Elias looked grim.

"He could consolidate the voting rights and legal liens."

"Meaning?"

Clara asked.

Dante answered.

"He doesn't just steal properties."

"He takes the company."

Sophia sat at the end of the table coloring.

She looked up at the word company.

Then she drew a small blue square.

Clara smiled faintly.

"What's that?"

Sophia pointed toward the blue box.

Then she drew a black line across it.

Dante crouched.

"Something missing?"

Sophia nodded.

She drew a circle.

Inside it, she made a tiny star.

Dr. Shaw looked at Dante.

"A necklace."

The sapphire locket.

Clara understood.

"The ledger is the map."

She looked at Julian, who had been brought in under guard.

"But the locket may contain the proof of the forged ownership transfers."

Julian's face tightened.

"Vincent kept it in his office safe."

Dante turned.

"Where?"

"Rinaldi Legal."

"Code?"

Julian shook his head.

"Changed every week."

Marco smiled without humor.

"Then we don't need the code."

Dante looked at him.

Marco held up his phone.

"We have a warrant option now."

Dante almost laughed.

"Mercer controls the detective squad."

"Not all of law enforcement."

Clara looked at Rebecca's letter.

Her mother had written one simple instruction.

Call the police.

For years, Vincent had made everyone believe the police belonged to Dante.

Maybe the only way to break the illusion was to bring in people who did not belong to either of them.

Dante looked at Elias.

"Federal financial crimes."

Elias nodded.

"I know an agent."

Julian's head snapped up.

"If you bring the federal government into this, every Vancini company gets opened."

Dante turned to him.

"Good."

Julian stared.

"Do you understand what that means?"

"Yes."

"You could lose everything."

Dante looked toward Sophia.

"I already almost did."

Then Elias's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Everyone watched him.

Elias lowered the phone slowly.

"Tomas just used his passport."

Dante stood.

"Where?"

"JFK."

"Flight?"

"He isn't leaving."

Elias looked at the screen again.

"He just came through international arrivals."

Clara frowned.

"From where?"

Elias turned the phone toward them.

"Naples."

Marco went completely still.

Dante looked at his brother.

May you like

If Tomas had just arrived from Naples, then the man on the Vancini security cameras that morning had not been Tomas.

Someone had been wearing his face well enough to fool everyone.
