Chapter 15 - What Julian Took From Elena

Julian's second confession was worse than the first.

He returned to the house at 12:18 a.m.

Thirty-three minutes after the cameras came back online.

He used a basement entrance the police never documented.

He found Elena in the west corridor.

She was already dead.

He found Sophia still inside the linen closet.

And instead of carrying the child out, Julian did something Clara struggled to hear without hating him.

He searched Elena's body.

Dante stood in the library with one hand braced against a chair.

"For what?"

Julian's voice was barely audible.

"A key."

"What key?"

"The brass key Sophia used tonight."

Clara looked at Sophia.

The child had found that key hidden in her dress pocket three years later.

"Why?"

Julian looked at Dante.

"Because Vincent told me Elena had hidden the original S-7 ledger somewhere in the house."

"And you believed she carried the key."

"Yes."

"Did you find it?"

"No."

Sophia spoke quietly.

"Mommy gave me."

Everyone looked at her.

Clara crouched beside her.

"Mommy gave you the key?"

Sophia nodded.

"Before closet."

The pieces shifted again.

Elena had hidden Sophia first.

She had given her the key to the secret compartment near the baseboard.

Then Julian closed the closet door after discovering the child.

Vincent entered the corridor looking for Sophia.

Elena refused to reveal where she was.

Clara's throat tightened.

"She was protecting you."

Sophia's eyes filled.

Dante put his hand over his mouth.

For three years, he had believed his daughter survived by chance.

Now he knew Elena had made sure of it.

Julian continued.

"I couldn't find the key."

"So what did you take?"

Dante asked.

Julian looked at the floor.

"Her necklace."

Dante froze.

"Elena's locket?"

"Yes."

"Where is it?"

Julian swallowed.

"Vincent has it."

Dante took one step toward him.

"Why?"

"There was a storage chip inside."

Clara stared.

"Another backup."

Julian nodded.

"Elena was obsessed with backups by then."

"Smart woman."

Marco's voice cut through the room.

Julian accepted the insult.

"I found the locket under her collar."

"I took it."

"I gave it to Vincent the next morning."

Dante's voice dropped.

"At Elena's funeral planning meeting."

Julian closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Dante turned away.

Clara saw the pain in his face.

This was not just betrayal.

It was contamination.

Every memory of those first days after Elena's death had Vincent or Julian somewhere inside it.

The men who helped choose flowers had been hiding evidence.

The men who stood beside the coffin had been lying.

The man who handled the estate had helped create the reason Elena died.

Sophia tugged Clara's sleeve.

"Mommy necklace blue."

Clara looked down.

"The stone was blue?"

Sophia nodded.

Dante turned.

"Sapphire."

"Elena wore it every day."

Clara remembered the blue ribbon.

The blue room.

The blue key.

Elena had created a color trail a four-year-old might remember when words failed her.

"She made everything blue."

Dante looked at Clara.

"What?"

"The things Sophia needed to remember."

Clara knelt beside the child.

"Did Mommy tell you blue means safe?"

Sophia's eyes widened.

Then she nodded.

Dr. Shaw, who had joined them, covered her mouth.

"I taught Elena that."

Everyone looked at her.

"We used color association during Sophia's sessions."

"Blue meant safe."

"Red meant stop."

"Yellow meant tell an adult."

Clara felt chills.

Elena had turned her investigation into something her daughter could survive.

The blue room was safe.

The blue ribbons marked Elena's files.

The blue key opened the hidden archive.

The blue sapphire locket carried evidence.

Maybe Sophia had not been giving them disconnected fragments.

Maybe she had been following a map Elena created for her.

"What was red?"

Clara asked.

Sophia looked at Julian.

Then at Dante.

"Red door."

Dante frowned.

"Where?"

Sophia shook her head.

Shaw crouched.

"Can you draw it?"

Sophia took the order pad.

She drew a long hallway.

At the end, a red rectangle.

Beside it, she drew water.

Wavy lines.

Then a boat.

Marco stepped closer.

"That's the old harbor house."

Dante looked at him.

"Which one?"

"Vittorio's place in Staten Island."

Dante's face changed.

"The boathouse door was red."

Marco nodded.

"Nobody has used it since Dad died."

Julian looked suddenly alarmed.

Clara caught it.

"What?"

Julian said nothing.

Dante turned.

"Julian."

"Vincent used that property."

"For what?"

"Meetings."

"What kind of meetings?"

"The kind he didn't put on calendars."

Dante looked at Sophia's drawing.

"And you never thought to mention this?"

Julian rubbed his face.

"There are fifty properties."

"Not with red doors Sophia remembers."

They went at dawn.

This time Sophia stayed behind with Dr. Shaw, Maria, and a security team personally vetted by Elias and Marco.

Clara hesitated before leaving.

Sophia grabbed her hand.

"Come back."

Clara smiled gently.

"I will."

Sophia looked at Dante.

"Daddy too."

Dante crouched and kissed her forehead.

"Always."

The old harbor house stood behind a rusted fence overlooking Arthur Kill.

The main house was empty.

The boathouse door was red.

Faded.

Peeling.

Locked.

Dante's men forced it open.

Inside were two boats covered in dust.

A workbench.

Shelves.

An old office.

Nothing obvious.

Clara searched for blue.

That was how Elena had taught Sophia to think.

She found a blue-painted metal hook behind a cabinet.

It was attached to a thin cable.

Clara pulled.

A section of shelving shifted.

Behind it was a narrow room.

Dante entered first.

The walls were covered in documents.

Photographs.

Maps.

Bank charts.

Elena's investigation.

Clara stared.

It was not a box.

It was an entire war room.

At the center hung a photograph of Vincent.

Red string connected him to Mercer, Julian, Sable Seven, and six shell companies.

Another line connected him to the Vancini Continuity Trust.

A final line ended at a photograph of newborn Sophia.

Under it, Elena had written:

THE HEIR IS THE LEVER.

Dante's face became stone.

Marco swore.

Clara looked at the bottom of the wall.

One empty space showed four thumbtack holes.

Something large had been removed recently.

On the floor beneath it lay a torn label.

S-7.

Julian stared at the empty space.

"Vincent got here first."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the dust.

A clean rectangle marked where the missing material had hung.

But dust had gathered along the lower edge.

"This was removed months ago."

Dante looked at Julian.

"Who knew about this room?"

Julian went still.

"I didn't."

Marco shook his head.

"Neither did I."

Clara studied the photographs.

One face appeared repeatedly in the background.

Not Vincent.

Not Mercer.

A younger man with dark hair.

He stood behind Vincent at a fundraiser.

Near Julian at a port meeting.

Outside the courthouse after Elena's death.

Clara pointed.

"Who is that?"

Dante looked.

His expression changed.

"Tomas."

Clara's stomach dropped.

The guard Dante had left at the house.

With Sophia.

Dante already had his phone out.

No answer.

He called Maria.

No answer.

He called Shaw.

No answer.

Then the security feed loaded.

May you like

Every camera at the Vancini residence was black.

Again.
