Chapter 14 - Julian's Confession

Julian did not deny it.
That made the accusation worse.
Dante stood between his daughter and his cousin while one of the guards cut Marco free.
Sophia clung to Clara.
Marco rubbed his wrists and stared at Julian with open hatred.
"Ask him."
Dante did.
"What is S-7?"
Julian looked toward the steel door.
"We need to leave first."
"Answer me."
"Mercer is still in the building."
As if summoned by his name, two shots cracked somewhere above them.
Dante's radio erupted.
His security team had encountered armed men near the loading bay.
Dante looked at Marco.
"Can you walk?"
"Yes."
They moved through a service tunnel Julian remembered from old construction plans.
Sophia refused to let Clara put her down.
Dante stayed close enough to touch his daughter's shoulder every few steps.
They emerged in an alley two blocks from the pier.
A secure vehicle met them there.
Mercer escaped.
Again.
Vincent was nowhere near the building.
Again.
They returned to the Vancini house after 2:00 a.m.
A doctor examined Sophia privately with Clara and Dante present.
She was dehydrated, frightened, and exhausted.
She had no serious physical injuries.
Dante listened to that sentence twice.
Only then did he allow himself to sit down.
Sophia fell asleep holding Clara's hand.
Outside the bedroom, Marco waited.
Julian was downstairs under guard.
Dante closed Sophia's door gently.
Then he turned to his brother.
"Start talking."
Marco leaned against the hallway wall.
"I went to Naples because I found money moving through a Vancini shipping company I didn't recognize."
"Which one?"
"Sable Seven Logistics."
Dante's expression changed.
"S-7."
Marco nodded.
"I thought it was tax fraud."
"It was more."
"I figured that out when Mercer showed up in Naples with three men and put me in a car."
Clara stared at him.
"Mercer kidnapped you?"
"On Vincent's orders."
"How do you know?"
Marco gave a bitter laugh.
"Because Vincent video-called while they were tying me to a chair."
Dante's eyes hardened.
"Why keep you alive?"
"Leverage."
Marco looked toward Sophia's room.
"And because he wanted to know what I had found."
"Did you tell him?"
"No."
"Where is it?"
Marco looked at Dante.
"Not on me."
"Marco."
"I mailed the copy to myself before they grabbed me."
Dante blinked.
Marco shrugged.
"Sometimes stupid solutions work."
Clara almost smiled.
Then Marco's expression hardened again.
"Julian knew about Sable Seven years ago."
"How?"
"Because his signature is on the first incorporation filing."
Dante turned toward the stairs.
"Then let's ask him."
Julian sat in the library with two guards behind him.
His wet coat had been taken.
A glass of water sat untouched on the table.
Dante entered.
Marco followed.
Clara stayed near the door.
Julian looked at her.
"Sophia?"
"Safe."
Something in his face loosened.
Dante noticed.
It did not soften him.
"What is Sable Seven?"
Julian looked at Marco.
"You told him."
"I told him enough."
Dante stepped closer.
"Now you tell me the rest."
Julian stared at the water.
"Sable Seven started as a shell company."
"For what?"
"Vincent said it was for sensitive acquisitions."
"Meaning?"
"Properties the family wanted without public association."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"I never authorized it."
"I know."
"You signed anyway."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Julian finally looked at him.
"Because I wanted more."
The honesty was ugly.
"More what?"
"Money."
"Power."
"A seat beside you instead of behind you."
Marco laughed bitterly.
"There he is."
Julian ignored him.
"Vincent told me you would never treat me as an equal."
Dante's eyes went cold.
"So you helped him forge my signature."
"At first, I didn't know he was forging anything."
"At first."
Julian swallowed.
"Then I knew."
"When?"
"Eight years ago."
Dante stared at him.
"Before Sophia was born."
"Yes."
"Before my father died."
"Yes."
"Did my father know?"
Julian shook his head.
"Vincent made sure he didn't."
Dante looked at Clara.
Rebecca had discovered the altered trust seven years earlier.
The timeline matched.
"Elena found Sable Seven?"
Julian nodded.
"She found everything."
"When?"
"About nine months before she died."
"And you started searching her office."
Julian looked down.
"Yes."
"Sophia saw you."
"Yes."
"You told her not to tell me."
Julian's voice dropped.
"Yes."
Dante walked to the window.
For several seconds he said nothing.
Then he asked the question everyone had been waiting for.
"What happened the night Elena died?"
Julian closed his eyes.
"Vincent called me at 10:50."
"Why?"
"He said Elena had the original S-7 ledger and Rebecca's reconciliation."
Clara's pulse jumped.
"My mother's file."
Julian nodded.
"Vincent wanted both."
Dante did not turn around.
"What did you do?"
"I went to your house."
"Using my service code."
"Yes."
"Where was Elena?"
"Upstairs."
"Sophia?"
Julian's face changed.
"I didn't see her at first."
Dante turned.
"At first."
Julian rubbed both hands over his face.
"Elena caught me in the study."
"What did she do?"
"She told me she had copies."
"Then?"
"She said she was going to you in the morning."
Dante went still.
"Why not that night?"
"Because you were at the charity dinner and she was afraid Vincent had people there too."
Marco stared at Julian.
"Keep going."
Julian's voice became rough.
"Vincent arrived at 11:39."
Clara remembered the timeline.
11:42 to 11:45.
Three missing minutes.
"Did Elena let him in?"
"No."
"I did."
Dante's face changed.
Julian forced himself to continue.
"Elena ran upstairs."
"Vincent asked where Sophia was."
Clara felt cold.
The recovered recording.
"Where is she?"
It had been Vincent's voice.
"Why did he want Sophia?"
Julian looked at Dante.
"Because Sophia had seen me in Elena's office before."
"A four-year-old."
"A four-year-old whose therapist was recording everything she said."
Dante gripped the edge of the desk.
"What did you do?"
Julian's eyes filled with something close to shame.
"I went upstairs after them."
"And?"
"I saw Sophia in the linen closet."
Clara stopped breathing.
"She saw your ring through the vents."
"Yes."
"What did you do?"
Julian whispered the answer.
"I closed the closet door."
Dante stared at him.
"To trap her?"
"No."
Julian looked up.
"To hide her from Vincent."
The room went silent.
Marco looked stunned.
Clara thought of Sophia's first word.
Julian.
Not because he had been the man who killed Elena.
Because his ring was the last thing she saw before the closet door closed.
Dante's voice was barely audible.
"Then what happened?"
Julian looked at him.
"Vincent found Elena in the west corridor."
"I heard them arguing."
"She told him the evidence was already out of his reach."
"He called her a liar."
"Then I heard her scream."
Dante's face broke for half a second.
"Did you see him kill her?"
Julian closed his eyes.
"No."
"Did you go to her?"
Silence.
Dante stepped forward.
"Did you go to my wife?"
Julian's voice cracked.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I was a coward."
Dante hit the desk so hard the water glass jumped.
Julian did not flinch.
"I left through the service garage with the file box."
"And you left Elena with him."
"Yes."
"You left Sophia in a closet."
"I thought that was the only place Vincent wouldn't see her."
"You could have called me."
"I know."
"You could have called police."
"I know."
"Instead you helped stage the home invasion."
Julian's head snapped up.
Clara saw it.
Dante did too.
"You didn't tell me that."
Julian stared at him.
Dante's voice lowered.
"But you just confirmed it."
Julian looked away.
"Mercer called me after I left."
"He said Vincent needed the scene to look random."
"I gave him access to the garage."
Dante's hands curled into fists.
"And the cameras?"
"I gave Mercer the administrator token."
"The three missing minutes."
"Yes."
Marco stepped forward.
"So you didn't kill Elena."
His voice was full of disgust.
"You just made sure the man who did could walk away."
Julian stared at the floor.
"Yes."
A small voice came from the library doorway.
"He came back."
Everyone turned.
Sophia stood there in pajamas.
Clara rushed toward her.
Dante crouched.
"Sweetheart, you should be sleeping."
Sophia looked at Julian.
Her face was pale.
"He came back."
Julian stopped breathing.
Dante looked at his daughter.
"Who came back?"
Sophia pointed at Julian.
"Him."
Dante's gaze snapped to his cousin.
Julian whispered.
"No."
Sophia's voice shook.
"After Mommy stopped."
Clara wrapped an arm around her.
Dante did not move.
"Julian."
Julian's face had gone gray.
"I can explain."
May you like
Dante's eyes became ice.
"Then explain why you just lied to me again."
