Chapter 6 - The Three Missing Minutes

The old family chapel sat on sixty acres of winter-bare land forty miles north of Manhattan.

Dante had not been there since Elena's funeral.

Clara learned that on the drive because he said it once and then did not speak again for twenty miles.

Three SUVs followed them.

Elias remained on speaker from his lab.

Tomas stayed at the house with Maria and a second security team.

Carlo was transferred to a secure location.

Nobody knew whether Julian, Vincent, Marco, or someone else had Sophia.

The only concrete lead was a child's drawing and a key marked 11-42.

Clara stared at the key in her palm.

The blue enamel was chipped.

"What does it open?"

Dante kept his eyes on the road.

"I don't know."

"You own the chapel."

"My grandfather built it."

"That isn't the same thing."

"No."

He finally looked at the key.

"Elena knew the property better than I did."

Clara waited.

Dante's voice lowered.

"She liked old rooms."

"Old rooms?"

"Places people stopped paying attention to."

He almost smiled.

"She said forgotten rooms tell the truth because nobody bothers teaching them how to lie."

Clara looked out the window.

"That sounds like her."

Dante glanced at her.

"You didn't know her."

"No."

Clara closed her hand around the key.

"But I know why Sophia remembers her."

Dante said nothing after that.

The chapel appeared through the trees twenty minutes later.

Gray stone.

Narrow windows.

A square bell tower.

Exactly like Sophia's drawing.

The front doors were closed.

No cars were visible.

Dante's men spread out around the building.

Clara stayed beside him.

He did not tell her to remain in the SUV this time.

They entered through a side door.

Dust floated in pale shafts of light.

Rows of wooden pews faced a small marble altar.

The air smelled like cold stone and old wax.

"Sophia!"

Dante's voice echoed.

Nothing answered.

They searched the main chapel.

Empty.

The sacristy.

Empty.

The bell stairs.

Empty.

Then Clara noticed three trees through a narrow window behind the altar.

They stood in a perfect line.

Exactly like the drawing.

"Dante."

He followed her gaze.

They went outside.

Behind the chapel, the land sloped toward a small family cemetery.

Three yew trees stood beside an old stone wall.

At the base of the middle tree was a blue metal door set into the ground.

Dante stopped.

"I have never seen that."

The key in Clara's hand suddenly felt heavy.

One of the guards pulled at the door.

Locked.

Clara held up the key.

Dante nodded.

She inserted it.

The lock turned.

Under the door was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

A guard went first.

Dante followed.

Clara went behind him.

The stairs ended in a stone corridor beneath the cemetery.

Old burial vaults lined one side.

Storage rooms lined the other.

At the far end, a dim electric light glowed.

It should not have been on.

Someone had been there recently.

Dante drew a weapon.

Clara's pulse jumped.

He motioned for her to stay behind him.

They reached the lit room.

Inside was a folding chair.

A half-empty bottle of water.

A child's pink cardigan.

Sophia's.

Clara grabbed it.

"She was here."

Dante touched the sleeve.

His control slipped for half a second.

Then one of the guards called from the next room.

"Sir."

Dante moved.

A wall of old filing cabinets filled the room.

One drawer stood open.

Inside were folders tied with blue silk ribbon.

Dozens of them.

Dante stared.

"Elena."

Clara pulled one file carefully.

The label read VANCINI FOUNDATION - INTERNAL.

Another read HARBOR REDEVELOPMENT - DISBURSEMENTS.

A third read J.V. - PRIVATE.

Dante took that one.

Inside were bank statements.

Photographs.

Copies of wire transfers.

A page of handwritten notes in Elena's script.

At the top she had written one sentence.

JULIAN ISN'T STEALING FROM DANTE.

Dante's brow tightened.

The next line was worse.

HE'S STEALING DANTE.

Clara looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Dante read faster.

Elena had listed shell companies.

Trust structures.

Property transfers.

Voting rights.

Signatures.

Several bore Dante's name.

Dante stared at one page.

"I never signed this."

Clara leaned in.

"What is it?"

"A proxy agreement."

"For what?"

"My voting shares in Vancini Holdings."

"Who gets them?"

Dante's eyes moved down the page.

"Vincent, as trustee."

The room went cold.

Clara picked up another sheet.

"These dates are from before Elena died."

"Six months before."

A guard called from the corridor.

"Movement outside."

Everyone froze.

Dante pointed toward Clara.

"Stay here."

He and two guards moved out.

Clara hated being left in the underground room.

She hated it more when she heard footsteps overhead.

Then a car door slammed.

A man's voice shouted.

She could not make out the words.

Clara looked around the file room.

There had to be another exit.

Sophia had been brought in and taken out without leaving obvious tracks at the chapel entrance.

She searched behind the cabinets.

Nothing.

Then she noticed a draft moving one strip of blue ribbon.

Cold air came from the back wall.

Clara pushed against a wooden panel.

It shifted.

Behind it was another narrow passage.

"Dante!"

No answer.

Clara stepped inside.

The passage sloped upward.

Thirty feet later, she found another door.

It opened behind the stone cemetery wall.

Fresh tire marks cut through the mud beyond it.

A vehicle had been there recently.

Very recently.

Clara followed the tracks ten yards and found something pink beneath a bush.

A child's hair clip.

Sophia wore the matching clip the night before.

Clara's heart slammed against her ribs.

"Sophia!"

A branch snapped behind her.

Clara spun around.

A man stood ten feet away.

Gray maintenance jacket.

Baseball cap.

Black mask pulled under his chin.

He was not Julian.

He was not Vincent.

Clara recognized him anyway.

Detective Anthony Mercer.

The same detective who had searched her apartment.

He held Sophia's other pink hair clip in one hand.

Clara stopped breathing.

Mercer looked almost embarrassed.

"You really should have stayed in the chapel."

Clara stepped backward.

"Where is she?"

Mercer slipped the clip into his pocket.

"Safe for the moment."

"You planted the bracelet."

"I followed a warrant."

"You planted the cash."

"Prove it."

"You took my mother's photograph."

For the first time, Mercer smiled.

"That was unnecessary theater."

"Then why do it?"

"Because fear makes people predictable."

Clara's hand moved slowly toward her phone.

Mercer shook his head.

"Don't."

"What do you want?"

"For you to tell Dante you made a mistake."

"About what?"

"Everything."

Clara stared at him.

"Sophia spoke."

"Children say things."

"She identified Julian's symbol."

"You interpreted a drawing."

"She found Elena's phone."

Mercer's smile disappeared.

There it was.

The same reaction Vincent had given.

Clara took another step backward.

"You knew about the phone."

Mercer reached inside his coat.

Clara ran.

She made it three steps before his hand closed around her arm.

She twisted hard and drove her elbow backward.

Mercer cursed and lost his grip.

Clara sprinted toward the stone wall.

"Dante!"

A shot cracked through the trees.

Stone exploded beside her shoulder.

Clara dropped behind the wall.

Voices shouted from the chapel.

Mercer ran toward the woods.

Dante appeared around the corner with two guards.

"Clara!"

"Mercer!"

She pointed.

"The detective!"

Dante's men chased him into the trees.

Dante crouched beside Clara.

"Are you hit?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

She grabbed his coat.

"He has Sophia's hair clip."

Dante's face changed.

"He said she's safe for the moment."

Dante stood.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"Where is my daughter?"

A distorted voice replied.

"You found Elena's files."

Dante looked toward the underground door.

"And you found our warning."

Dante's eyes went cold.

"If you touch Sophia-"

"We already did."

The line went silent for one second.

Then Sophia's voice came through.

Small.

Shaking.

"Daddy?"

Dante stopped breathing.

"Sophia."

"Daddy, the blue room is open."

May you like

A hand covered her mouth.

The call ended.
