Chapter 19 - The Doctor's Secret

Dante wanted to refuse the demand.

Dr. Shaw wanted him to comply.

They knew that because Vincent made her say it on video.

At 11:28 p.m., a thirty-second clip arrived on Bennett's secure phone.

Evelyn sat in a chair inside a room with bare concrete walls.

Her hands were free.

No visible injuries.

A man stood behind the camera.

Vincent's voice gave instructions.

"Tell Dante what you did."

Shaw looked directly into the lens.

Her face was white.

"Dante, I lied to you."

Dante went still.

"About what?"

Of course she could not hear him.

Shaw continued.

"I kept one of Elena's files."

"I told Vincent it was destroyed."

"I told you it was destroyed too."

Clara looked at Bennett.

The agent's expression tightened.

"Which file?"

Dante whispered.

Shaw answered from the recording.

"Session twelve."

Julian looked up sharply.

The missing session.

"I hid it because Elena asked me to."

"She said if anything happened, I was to wait until Sophia spoke again."

Clara's pulse accelerated.

Vincent's voice came from behind the camera.

"And where is it?"

Shaw closed her eyes.

"I won't tell you."

A hand entered frame and grabbed the back of her chair.

The video shook.

Then Vincent addressed the camera directly without showing his face.

"Locket."

"One hour."

"No federal agents."

"No Dante."

A pause.

"Clara brings it."

The video ended.

Dante said one word.

"No."

Clara already knew he would.

Bennett did too.

"The locket is evidence."

Dante looked at her.

"That is not why I said no."

Bennett folded her arms.

"I know."

Clara stared at the frozen image of Shaw.

"Vincent thinks I can be controlled because I'm not family."

Dante looked at her.

"He has been wrong about you repeatedly."

"Let's use that."

"No."

"You keep saying that like it has worked before."

"This time I mean it more."

Clara almost smiled.

Then she looked at the locket on the evidence table.

"Evelyn protected Sophia's last session for three years."

"We do not leave her there."

Dante's expression tightened.

"We won't."

"But I go."

"No."

Bennett raised a hand.

"Both of you stop."

They looked at her.

"We can make a controlled exchange."

Dante laughed once.

"He asked for no federal agents."

"Criminals ask for many things."

"He'll search Clara."

"Then we do not put a transmitter on Clara."

Clara looked at Bennett.

"Where do you put it?"

Bennett looked at the locket.

Elias shook his head.

"Too obvious."

"Vincent knows the locket contains a chip."

Clara reached into her apron pocket.

The folded paper bird Sophia had given her was still there.

She set it on the table.

Dante stared at it.

"Absolutely not."

Clara blinked.

"I haven't said anything."

"You were about to suggest hiding a tracker in Sophia's paper bird."

"I was."

"No."

Bennett picked up the bird.

"Actually, it's not bad."

Dante looked betrayed.

"Agent Bennett."

"He will search electronics."

"He may not search folded paper."

Elias held the bird carefully.

"We can use a passive reflector."

"No battery."

"No active radio signal until our scanner hits it at range."

Dante stared at everyone.

"I dislike all of you."

Clara finally smiled.

"Noted."

Vincent sent the exchange location at 11:41.

An abandoned municipal records building near the East River.

The address seemed random until Bennett checked ownership.

A shell company tied to Sable Seven had purchased the building five years earlier.

Of course.

Everything was connected.

Clara arrived at 12:22 a.m.

She wore jeans, a dark coat, and the paper bird in her pocket.

The locket hung around her neck.

The real storage chip had been removed.

A blank duplicate sat inside.

Vincent did not know that.

Or they hoped he did not.

Bennett's teams stayed six blocks away.

Dante stayed with them because Clara had made him promise.

It was the hardest promise he had made all week.

At the records building, the front door stood open.

One bare bulb burned in the lobby.

Clara entered alone.

"Evelyn?"

Her voice echoed.

No answer.

A speaker crackled overhead.

Vincent.

"Second floor."

Clara climbed.

The staircase smelled like dust and damp paper.

On the second floor, rows of metal shelves stretched into darkness.

Boxes of old city records sat beneath torn labels.

Dr. Shaw sat at a table in the center aisle.

Her wrists were tied now.

A strip of tape covered her mouth.

Vincent stood behind her.

No Mercer.

No visible guards.

Clara stopped twenty feet away.

"Let her go."

Vincent smiled.

"You say that as if we're negotiating from equal positions."

"You asked for the locket."

Clara touched the chain.

"Here."

Vincent held out his hand.

"Bring it."

Clara did not move.

"Evelyn first."

Vincent laughed softly.

"Rebecca did this too."

Clara's skin went cold.

"Did what?"

"Tried to turn every transaction into a moral debate."

"Did you threaten her with me?"

Vincent's expression did not change.

"Yes."

The honesty hit harder than denial.

"Did you kill her?"

"Cancer killed Rebecca."

Clara watched his face.

"You expect me to believe you had nothing to do with it?"

"I threatened her job."

"I threatened you."

"I did not give her cancer."

He sounded almost offended.

Clara hated that she believed this particular answer.

Vincent had done enough without inventing more.

"Why was Elena watching me?"

"Because Rebecca told her you were the only person she trusted completely."

Clara's throat tightened.

Vincent continued.

"Elena thought Rebecca might have hidden records with you without telling you."

"She was right."

"Yes."

His eyes dropped to the locket.

"Now bring it."

Clara took three steps forward.

"Why Sophia?"

Vincent's patience thinned.

"We are past questions."

"You kidnapped a seven-year-old twice."

"Once."

Clara stopped.

"What?"

Vincent's eyes narrowed slightly.

"The first removal from Dante's house was Mercer's improvisation."

"I ordered Sophia relocated later."

Clara caught the wording.

"You blame Mercer when it helps you."

"Mercer became undisciplined."

"Because he thought he was untouchable."

"Because Dante's reputation made him untouchable."

There it was again.

Vincent had hidden behind Dante for years.

"You made people think Dante ordered everything."

Vincent smiled.

"I rarely had to make them think anything."

"Fear does efficient paperwork."

Clara wanted Bennett to hear that sentence.

There was no microphone.

Only the passive reflector in her pocket.

She had to keep Vincent talking long enough for the teams to locate them.

"Why kill Elena?"

Vincent's smile vanished.

"She was not supposed to die."

Clara stopped breathing.

Dr. Shaw's eyes widened behind him.

"What?"

Vincent looked toward the dark shelves.

"She was supposed to give me the ledger."

"She refused."

"She ran."

"You followed her."

"Yes."

"She screamed."

Vincent's jaw tightened.

"She fought."

"And then?"

He looked at Clara.

"She fell."

Clara stared.

"You expect that to help you?"

"I expect accuracy."

"You broke into her home."

"With Julian's access."

"You chased her through the house."

"Yes."

"You were looking for her child."

"I was looking for leverage."

Dr. Shaw made a muffled sound.

Vincent ignored her.

Clara's stomach turned.

"Sophia was four."

"Sophia was the beneficiary of a trust worth more than most countries' annual budgets."

"She was four."

Clara repeated it harder.

Vincent's eyes went flat.

"Money does not care about age."

There was the man Elena had feared.

Not explosive.

Not theatrical.

Just empty where a normal boundary should have been.

Clara took the locket off.

"Let Evelyn stand."

Vincent considered it.

Then cut the zip tie around Shaw's ankles.

"Stand."

Shaw rose unsteadily.

Vincent kept one hand on her shoulder.

Clara held out the locket.

"Come take it."

Vincent shook his head.

"Closer."

Clara moved until only six feet separated them.

"Now Evelyn walks past me."

Vincent smiled.

"You really do think like Rebecca."

"Thank you."

"It was not a compliment."

"Still taking it."

For the first time, Shaw almost smiled behind the tape.

Vincent pushed her forward.

Clara extended the locket.

Shaw passed beside her.

Then Vincent grabbed Clara's wrist.

Fast.

Hard.

He pulled her toward him and snatched the necklace.

"Run, Evelyn!"

Clara shouted.

Shaw ran.

Vincent twisted Clara's arm behind her back.

"You were supposed to come alone."

"I did."

"No."

He reached into her coat pocket.

His fingers closed around the paper bird.

Clara stopped breathing.

Vincent pulled it out.

He stared at the folded paper.

Then at Clara.

"Sophia?"

"She likes birds."

Vincent unfolded it slowly.

Inside, written in a child's uneven handwriting, were four words.

BLUE MEANS YOU LOSE.

Vincent's face changed.

A sharp electronic pulse sounded from somewhere outside.

The passive reflector had been detected.

Vincent swore.

He shoved Clara toward the shelves and ran.

Federal agents entered the building below.

"Federal agents!"

Shaw screamed from the stairwell.

"Second floor!"

Clara chased Vincent through the records aisles.

She knew it was stupid.

She did it anyway.

He reached a rear stairwell.

Mercer appeared at the bottom.

"Move!"

Vincent descended.

Mercer looked up and saw Clara.

He raised a weapon.

A shot cracked.

Clara dropped behind a metal shelf.

Agents returned fire from below.

Mercer disappeared through a door.

Vincent did not.

For one second, Clara saw him on the landing between floors.

Then Dante appeared from the lower stairwell.

He had broken his promise.

Of course he had.

Vincent stopped.

Dante looked up.

The two men faced each other across twelve steps.

"Where's the locket?"

Dante asked.

Vincent held it up.

"Here."

Dante smiled faintly.

"Good."

Vincent frowned.

Dante continued.

"Because the chip isn't."

Vincent ripped the locket open.

Blank plastic stared back at him.

For the first time, Clara saw panic on his face.

Then Mercer shouted from below.

"Vincent!"

A metal door slammed.

The building lights went out.

When emergency lights came on three seconds later, Vincent was gone.

But Mercer was not.

Federal agents had him facedown on the floor at the rear exit.

Bennett stood over him.

"Anthony Mercer, you're under arrest."

Mercer laughed into the concrete.

"You think this ends with me?"

Bennett tightened the cuffs.

"No."

"I think it starts with you."

Clara found Dante on the second floor.

His hands were shaking with anger.

"You promised to stay back."

He looked at her.

"So did you."

"I never promised."

"Exactly."

Dr. Shaw approached.

Her face was pale.

"Session twelve."

Everyone turned.

Shaw pulled the tape from inside the lining of her boot.

Clara stared.

"You had it on you?"

"I moved it after Vincent took Sophia."

She held out a tiny flash drive.

"Elena made me promise not to let anyone hear this until Sophia spoke on her own again."

Dante took it carefully.

"Why?"

Shaw looked at him.

"Because session twelve wasn't Sophia talking about Julian."

A chill moved through Clara.

"Then what was it?"

May you like

Shaw answered.

"Sophia naming the second man in the house."
