Chapter 18 - Table Seven

By 8:00 p.m., the Belladonna Room looked exactly as it had before the nightmare began.

Crystal chandeliers glowed.

White tablecloths lay perfectly smooth.

Wineglasses caught the light.

Jazz drifted from hidden speakers.

But almost every person inside the restaurant was pretending to be someone else.

Two federal agents sat near the windows dressed as a married couple.

Three more occupied the bar.

An audio team worked from a delivery van across the street.

Dante's own security stayed out of sight under Bennett's orders.

"Your men are too recognizable."

Dante had hated that.

He had accepted it.

Julian sat alone at Table 7.

A microphone was sewn into the inside of his jacket.

His hands were visible on the table.

No weapon.

No phone.

No escape route Bennett had not already mapped.

Clara wore her Belladonna uniform.

For the first time since this started, she was back in the clothes she understood.

Black dress.

White apron.

Order pad in her pocket.

Dante hated that more than the federal agents.

"You should not be on the floor."

They stood inside the service corridor before opening.

Clara adjusted her apron.

"Vincent expects me here."

"That is exactly my objection."

"If I'm missing, he knows it's a trap."

"He already knows it may be a trap."

"Then let's not confirm it for him."

Dante stared at her.

"You are enjoying being impossible."

"No."

Clara looked through the service window toward Table 7.

"I'm enjoying not being afraid of him."

That was not entirely true.

She was terrified.

But fear had changed shape.

Two days earlier, Vincent had been an invisible force rearranging her life.

Now he had a face.

A name.

A pattern.

And for the first time, witnesses were watching him too.

Sophia was nowhere near the restaurant.

She was at a protected federal location with Dr. Shaw, Maria, and two agents.

Dante had argued against leaving her.

Sophia had solved the argument herself.

"Go get Mommy bad man."

Then she had handed Clara a folded paper bird.

Clara carried it in her apron pocket.

At 9:17 p.m., Vincent entered Belladonna.

He wore a navy suit.

No overcoat.

No briefcase.

No visible fear.

He paused inside the entrance and looked around.

Clara watched through the service station mirror.

Vincent's gaze moved over the federal agents without stopping.

Then it found Julian.

He smiled.

That smile made Clara angrier than a threat would have.

Vincent walked to Table 7 and sat across from Julian.

"You look tired."

Julian gave a weak laugh.

"Being hunted does that."

Vincent unfolded his napkin.

"Dante was always dramatic."

"This isn't Dante."

"No?"

"You ordered Mercer to kill Sophia."

Vincent looked toward the wine list.

"Did Mercer tell you that?"

"You did."

"Then you misunderstood."

Julian leaned forward.

"I spent eight years misunderstanding you."

Vincent smiled slightly.

"And profiting very well from it."

In the surveillance van, Bennett heard every word.

Clara carried a water pitcher onto the floor.

She approached Table 7.

Vincent noticed her twenty feet away.

His expression did not change.

That frightened her more than surprise would have.

Clara stopped beside the table.

"Water?"

Vincent looked up at her.

"Clara."

"Vincent."

Julian's eyes moved between them.

Clara poured.

Vincent watched her hand.

"Still working after all this excitement."

"Rent still exists after all this excitement."

His smile widened.

"Your mother used to say things like that."

Clara stopped pouring.

A drop of water hit the white tablecloth.

"You knew her."

"Briefly."

"You threatened her."

"Rebecca was prone to moral theater."

Clara's grip tightened on the pitcher.

"She was an accountant."

"Exactly."

Vincent lifted the glass.

"People who spend their lives balancing columns often mistake arithmetic for morality."

Clara wanted to throw the water in his face.

She didn't.

The microphone in her collar caught every word.

"Did you close my diner?"

Vincent took a sip.

"Not personally."

"Did you get me hired here?"

"I suggested the restaurant might benefit from someone with your temperament."

Julian stared at him.

"You brought her into this?"

Vincent glanced at him.

"She was already in it."

Clara's pulse jumped.

"Because of my mother."

"Because Rebecca stole something that belonged to me."

"Evidence doesn't belong to the criminal it exposes."

Vincent's smile disappeared.

There.

A crack.

Julian leaned forward.

"You said Rebecca's backup was destroyed."

Vincent looked at him.

"It was supposed to be."

"You searched Clara's apartment."

"Mercer searched Clara's apartment."

"On your order."

Vincent did not answer.

Julian pushed.

"You kidnapped Sophia."

Vincent's eyes cooled.

"Careful."

"You threatened my life."

"That was practical."

Bennett's voice came through Clara's hidden earpiece.

"Keep him talking."

Clara set the pitcher down.

"What did Elena find?"

Vincent turned toward her.

"More than was healthy."

The answer was quiet.

It was also the closest thing to an admission they had gotten.

Clara kept her face neutral.

"Did you kill her?"

Julian stopped breathing.

Vincent looked at Clara for a long time.

Then he smiled.

"You don't ask small questions."

"I don't have a lot of free time."

"No."

His eyes dropped to her apron.

"You don't."

Clara felt the warning.

Bennett spoke in her ear.

"Do not push further."

Clara ignored it.

"Did you kill Elena?"

Vincent leaned back.

"Elena made a series of choices."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you get."

Julian's voice shook.

"I heard her scream."

Vincent looked at him.

"And you ran."

Julian went white.

Vincent smiled.

"Do not suddenly become righteous because you discovered fear."

"You killed her."

"You helped me enter the house."

The words hung in the air.

Every microphone captured them.

Julian looked sick.

Vincent continued.

"You disabled the cameras."

"You gave Mercer access."

"You searched her body."

"And then you stood beside Dante at the funeral."

Vincent's voice was almost gentle.

"If I am a monster, Julian, you spent years carrying my coat."

Julian's eyes filled with rage.

"I never touched Elena."

"No."

Vincent leaned forward.

"You only made sure nobody could prove who did."

Bennett's voice sharpened in Clara's ear.

"We have enough to move on conspiracy and obstruction."

Clara looked toward the bar.

One agent shifted.

Vincent noticed.

His eyes moved to the window.

Then to Clara's collar.

The smallest smile touched his mouth.

"You should choose better jewelry."

Clara's blood went cold.

He had spotted the microphone.

Vincent stood.

Every agent in the restaurant moved.

"Federal agents!"

Vincent did not run toward the door.

He kicked the leg of Table 7.

The heavy table toppled sideways.

Glass shattered.

Lights died.

The fire alarm exploded overhead.

Emergency sprinklers came on at once.

Guests screamed even though half the room was law enforcement.

Clara dropped behind the service station.

Someone grabbed her arm.

She twisted.

Dante.

"Move."

He pulled her toward the kitchen.

Bennett shouted orders through the dark.

Julian was on the floor under two agents.

Vincent disappeared through the service corridor.

Clara pointed.

"He went back."

Dante followed.

The corridor was empty.

A metal service door stood open.

Behind it, stairs descended beneath the restaurant.

Dante swore.

"There is no basement exit on the plan."

Clara remembered something from her first week at Belladonna.

A dishwasher had once joked that the building was older underground than above it.

"Wine tunnels."

Dante looked at her.

"What?"

"Prohibition-era service tunnels."

They ran down the stairs.

Bennett and two agents followed.

The tunnel split in three directions.

Wet brick.

Low lights.

Old pipes.

No Vincent.

Then Clara heard a cough.

Left tunnel.

They ran.

At the end, a steel door stood open to an alley.

A black sedan accelerated away.

Bennett swore.

"Plate!"

An agent called it in.

Dante stared after the car.

Clara looked down.

Something glittered in a puddle near the door.

A sapphire.

Small.

Deep blue.

Set inside an old gold locket.

Elena's necklace.

Dante picked it up with shaking fingers.

Julian had said Vincent kept it in his office safe.

Vincent had carried it to Belladonna instead.

Clara looked at the broken clasp.

"He dropped it."

Bennett put on gloves.

"Or he wanted us to find it."

Dante opened the locket.

Inside was a tiny storage chip.

Exactly where Julian said it would be.

Elias was waiting at the Vancini house.

He inserted the chip into an isolated computer at 11:04 p.m.

One encrypted video file appeared.

The file name was simple.

FOR DANTE.

Dante sat down.

Clara stood beside him.

Elias entered the decryption key from Rebecca's reconciliation.

The screen flickered.

Elena appeared.

Alive.

Tired.

Sitting in the blue room.

Dante stopped breathing.

"Dante, if you are watching this, I was right about Vincent."

The room went silent.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

"And if Sophia is alive, then Julian did one decent thing before doing something unforgivable."

Julian, standing under guard at the back of the room, closed his eyes.

Elena continued.

"Do not trust the police report."

"Do not trust the estate inventory."

"Do not trust the Continuity Trust."

"And do not assume Vincent is working alone."

Dante leaned closer.

The video glitched.

Static filled the screen.

Elias cursed.

"File corruption."

"Fix it."

"I'm trying."

The image returned for three seconds.

Elena said:

"The second name is-"

The screen froze.

Then went black.

Dante stared at it.

Elias tried again.

Nothing.

Bennett's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

"When?"

She looked at Clara.

"We're coming."

Dante stood.

"What?"

Bennett lowered the phone.

"The protected location was breached."

Clara went cold.

"Sophia?"

Bennett shook her head quickly.

"She's safe."

Dante exhaled.

"Then what happened?"

Bennett looked at Dr. Shaw's empty chair.

"Evelyn is gone."

On the floor of the safe house, agents found one message written in blue marker.
