Chapter 13 - Dock 14

Elias opened Rebecca's memory card at 8:06 p.m.
The first folder contained spreadsheets.
The second contained scanned trust documents.
The third contained a single audio file.
Rebecca's voice came through the speaker.
Clara had not heard it in seven years.
For five seconds, she could not breathe.
Her mother sounded healthy.
Impatient.
Alive.
"This is Rebecca Hale, recording on March 14 because Vincent Rinaldi refuses to put anything in writing."
Paper rustled.
"The Continuity Trust amendment is fraudulent."
"Dante Vancini's signature is copied from a real estate closing file."
"Elena Vancini agrees."
"If anything happens to either of us, the original reconciliation is in the attachment labeled S-7."
The recording ended.
Elias searched.
There was no S-7 attachment.
Clara looked at the screen.
"Missing?"
"Or stored somewhere else."
Dante checked the time.
"We deal with it after Sophia is home."
Nobody argued.
Dock 14 belonged to an inactive freight terminal in Red Hook.
Dante's people owned the land through a subsidiary.
That meant Vincent knew exactly how to choose a location that looked private while still feeling familiar to Dante.
It also meant Vincent knew every camera, gate, and service tunnel.
Dante did not trust any of them.
He arranged two teams several blocks away.
No marked police units came.
Elias fed live traffic data from a remote location.
Clara wore a small microphone beneath her coat.
Dante hated that she was going in.
He said so six times.
Clara ignored him six times.
At 11:52 p.m., they drove through the terminal gate in one black sedan.
No escort was visible.
The river wind cut through Clara's coat as soon as she stepped out.
Warehouses rose around them like dark boxes.
Dock 14 extended into black water.
A single portable work light burned near the end.
Under it stood Julian.
Alone.
Dante stopped twenty feet away.
"Where is Sophia?"
Julian lifted both hands.
"Not with me."
Dante's face became dangerous.
"You have ten seconds."
"Vincent has her."
"Nine."
"He told me to bring you here."
"Eight."
"He thinks you found Rebecca's backup."
Clara felt Dante glance at her.
Julian noticed.
"So you did."
"Where is my daughter?"
Julian looked toward the river.
"I don't know exactly."
Dante stepped forward.
Julian raised his voice.
"But I know where Mercer is moving her."
Dante stopped.
"Talk."
Julian reached slowly inside his coat.
Dante's weapon appeared before Clara even saw him draw it.
Julian froze.
"It's a keycard."
He removed a plastic card between two fingers.
"Pier 9 cold storage."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Why would I believe you?"
Julian looked at Clara.
"Because Vincent is going to kill me too."
Clara studied his face.
For the first time, Julian did not look polished.
His tuxedo was gone.
He wore a wrinkled shirt under his coat.
There was a cut near his eyebrow.
Fear had stripped the arrogance out of him.
Dante did not care.
"You were in my house the night Elena died."
Julian's face tightened.
"Yes."
The admission landed hard.
Clara stopped breathing.
Dante's hand did not move.
"Did you kill her?"
"No."
"Did you touch her?"
"No."
"Did you help the man who did?"
Julian closed his eyes.
That was answer enough.
Dante moved.
Clara caught his sleeve.
"Sophia first."
He looked at her.
Every part of him wanted to cross the twenty feet between himself and Julian.
Clara did not release him.
"Sophia first."
Dante forced himself still.
Julian exhaled.
"Pier 9."
He held out the keycard.
"Basement freezer corridor."
"Why should Vincent trust you with that?"
"He doesn't anymore."
"Then how do you know?"
Julian's mouth twisted.
"Because Mercer called me an hour ago and told me to clean up the girl if the exchange failed."
Clara felt sick.
Dante's eyes went black.
"He told you to kill Sophia?"
Julian looked at him.
"Yes."
Dante took the keycard.
"And you came here instead."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Julian laughed once.
It sounded broken.
"Because I have done many things I cannot defend."
He looked toward Clara.
"I will not do that."
Dante stepped closer.
"You threatened her before she could speak."
Julian's face tightened.
"I frightened her."
"You told a four-year-old not to tell me what she saw."
"Yes."
"You stole files from Elena."
"Yes."
"You were in my house the night she died."
"Yes."
Dante's voice dropped.
"Then do not ask me for credit because you finally found one line you will not cross."
Julian looked away.
"I'm not."
A light flashed from a warehouse window.
Once.
Twice.
Elias spoke in Clara's earpiece.
"Vehicle entering Pier 9 now."
Dante turned.
"What vehicle?"
"Blue Lincoln."
Clara's pulse spiked.
Dante signaled his teams.
They moved.
Julian caught his arm.
"Wait."
Dante stared at the hand.
Julian released it.
"Mercer rigged the basement alarm to lock the freezer corridor."
"How do you know?"
"Because I paid for the system ten years ago."
"Then you're coming."
Julian went pale.
"Dante-"
"You know the building."
"Vincent will expect me."
"Good."
They reached Pier 9 in four minutes.
The blue Lincoln sat behind the loading bay.
No driver.
The rear seat was empty.
The keycard opened a side entrance.
Cold air rolled out.
The basement corridor smelled like metal and old refrigeration fluid.
Dante went first.
Julian followed under guard.
Clara stayed between two men.
Halfway down, a red light began flashing.
Julian swore.
"They know we're here."
Steel doors slammed shut behind them.
Then ahead.
They were trapped in a thirty-foot section of corridor.
Dante looked at Julian.
"Open it."
"I can't from here."
"Then think."
Julian stared at the pipes overhead.
"Manual release in the ceiling access."
One guard climbed onto a utility cart.
A voice came through the building speaker.
Mercer.
"Dante."
Dante looked up.
"I was wondering how long it would take."
Dante's voice was calm.
"Where is Sophia?"
Mercer laughed.
"Still beginning with the wrong question."
Clara shouted.
"Where is she?"
Silence.
Then Mercer answered.
"Closer than you think."
A banging sound came from behind the steel door ahead.
Small.
Repeated.
Clara's heart jumped.
"Sophia!"
The banging stopped.
Then a child's voice screamed.
"Clara!"
Dante hit the door with both hands.
"Sophia!"
The guard found the release.
The steel door lifted six inches.
Dante dropped to the floor and forced his hands beneath it.
Two men joined him.
The door rose enough to crawl under.
Dante went first.
Clara followed before anyone could stop her.
The freezer room beyond was not active.
Sophia sat on the floor behind a stack of pallets.
Her hands were tied loosely in front of her.
She was crying.
Clara reached her first.
"I'm here."
Sophia threw both arms around her neck.
Dante dropped beside them.
For one second, he simply touched his daughter's hair as if proving she was real.
"Daddy."
He closed his eyes.
"I'm here, sweetheart."
Sophia grabbed his coat with one hand and Clara's with the other.
Then a man groaned from the far side of the room.
Dante turned.
Another figure was tied to a chair behind the pallets.
Bruised.
Exhausted.
Alive.
Marco Vancini.
Dante's brother raised his head.
"Took you long enough."
Dante stared at him.
"Marco."
Julian crawled under the door behind them.
Marco saw him.
Every trace of relief disappeared.
"You."
Julian stopped.
Marco strained against the chair.
"You lying bastard."
Dante turned.
"What?"
Marco looked at his brother.
"Julian didn't come here to save Sophia."
May you like
The room went silent.
"He came for the S-7 file."
