Chapter 17 - The Man on the Camera

Tomas was detained before he reached the baggage carousel.
Not by Dante's men.
By Port Authority officers working with a federal financial crimes task force Elias had contacted thirty minutes earlier.
That distinction mattered.
For the first time since Sophia whispered Julian's name, Dante was letting people outside his own organization touch the case.
It made Julian furious.
It made Marco uneasy.
It made Clara feel safer than she had in two days.
Special Agent Nora Bennett arrived at the Vancini residence at 9:20 a.m.
She was forty-two, compact, dark-haired, and unimpressed by expensive rooms.
She entered the library, looked at Dante, then at Julian under guard, then at the wall of recovered documents.
"Which one of you is going to lie to me first?"
Marco almost smiled.
Julian did not.
Dante answered.
"Probably him."
He pointed at Julian.
Bennett set her case on the table.
"Good."
"Saves time."
Clara liked her immediately.
Bennett had already seen copies of Rebecca's reconciliation, the forged Continuity Trust amendment, the Sable Seven transfer map, Elena's recovered audio, and the three-minute security gap.
She had not yet seen Sophia.
Dante made that condition clear.
"My daughter is not evidence on demand."
Bennett looked at him for a long moment.
"Agreed."
That surprised Julian.
It surprised Dante too.
Bennett continued.
"If she volunteers information and her therapist believes an interview would not harm her, we can discuss it later."
"Later."
"Later."
The agreement lasted less than ten seconds.
It changed the room.
At 9:42, Tomas arrived under federal escort.
He looked exhausted.
His jacket was wrinkled.
A bruise darkened one side of his jaw.
Dante met him in the center of the library.
"Where were you this morning?"
Tomas stared at him.
"On a plane."
"From Naples."
"Yes."
Marco stepped forward.
"You were there?"
Tomas looked at him.
Relief crossed his face.
"You're alive."
Marco's eyes narrowed.
"You sound surprised."
"I watched Mercer put you in a van."
The room went silent.
Bennett took over.
"Sit."
Tomas did.
She placed an audio recorder on the table.
"Start with why you were in Naples."
Tomas looked at Dante.
"Vincent sent me."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"You still worked for Vincent?"
"No."
"Then why go?"
Tomas looked ashamed.
"Because he had my daughter."
Dante stopped moving.
Clara felt the answer ripple through the room.
"You never told me you had a daughter."
"That was the point."
Tomas stared at his hands.
"Her mother and I never married."
"I kept them out of this life."
"Vincent found them anyway."
Bennett asked the next question.
"What did he make you do?"
"Fly to Naples."
"Meet Mercer."
"Give him Marco's travel schedule."
Marco's face hardened.
Tomas looked at him.
"I'm sorry."
"Keep talking."
"Mercer took Marco outside the city."
"I followed because Vincent told me I had to confirm the pickup."
"Then they took my phone and passport."
"I was held in a hotel room for two days."
"Yesterday morning, they gave everything back and told me to fly home."
Dante leaned forward.
"Who was in my house while you were gone?"
Tomas looked confused.
"What?"
Elias turned a monitor toward him.
The grainy antique-clock footage played.
A man who looked like Tomas crossed the corridor carrying a duffel bag.
Tomas watched twice.
Then he laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it frightened him.
"That's not me."
"We know."
Bennett paused the image.
"Do you recognize the coat?"
"Mine."
"The walk?"
Tomas stared.
"Mercer."
Clara leaned closer.
"You're sure?"
"He drags his right foot slightly."
Tomas pointed.
"Old ankle injury."
Elias advanced the footage frame by frame.
There it was.
A subtle hitch on the right side.
Clara had missed it.
Everyone had.
"But Maria saw your face."
Tomas looked at Clara.
"From how far away?"
Maria was brought to the library.
She watched the footage.
Her hands began shaking.
"I thought it was Tomas."
Bennett kept her voice gentle.
"Did you see his face clearly?"
"No."
"Why did you think it was him?"
"The jacket."
"The voice?"
Maria frowned.
"He barely spoke."
"Did anything seem different?"
Maria closed her eyes.
"The smell."
Clara looked at her.
"What smell?"
"Cologne."
She opened her eyes.
"Tomas doesn't wear cologne."
Tomas shook his head.
"Never."
Maria's face went pale.
"This man did."
Sophia stood in the hallway with Dr. Shaw.
Nobody had heard them approach.
She whispered:
"Uncle Vinny smell."
Dante turned.
"Sophia."
She pointed at the frozen image.
"Not Tomas."
Clara crossed to her.
"Did you see his face?"
Sophia shook her head.
"Hat."
"Did he talk?"
She nodded.
"Sofi-bird."
Dante closed his eyes.
Vincent had not needed to wear Tomas's face.
He had only needed Tomas's coat, badge, access credentials, and the confidence of a man nobody expected to challenge.
The camera had done the rest.
Bennett looked at Elias.
"Can you prove the credentials were cloned?"
"Already working on it."
Tomas reached into his shirt collar.
"Maybe this helps."
He pulled out a thin chain.
A tiny black object hung from it.
Bennett frowned.
"What is that?"
"A storage token."
Tomas looked at Dante.
"I took it from Mercer's bag in Naples."
Marco stared at him.
"While you were being held?"
"He left the bag in the bathroom once."
"Why didn't you use it?"
"I didn't know what it was."
Elias plugged it into an isolated reader.
The device contained encrypted credentials.
House access codes.
Warehouse access codes.
Property administrator passwords.
Police evidence-system logins.
And a folder labeled IDENTITIES.
Inside were photographs of Dante's guards, staff, contractors, and drivers.
Each file included clothing sizes, schedules, voice samples, and access habits.
Clara felt sick.
Vincent had not merely stolen Dante's name.
He had cataloged everyone around him.
The final file was Clara's.
She stared at her own photograph.
It had been taken outside the roadside diner three months earlier.
Before she ever met Sophia.
Dante looked at Elias.
"Open it."
The file contained her apartment address.
Work schedule.
Landlord information.
Mother's name.
Old employment history.
And one note.
POSSIBLE REBECCA BACKUP HOLDER.
Clara stopped breathing.
They had been watching her before she took the Belladonna job.
"The diner closing."
She said it slowly.
Elias looked at her.
"What about it?"
"It closed two weeks before I applied at Belladonna."
Dante's face changed.
Clara felt the entire path behind her rearrange.
Final notice on her apartment door.
Diner closes.
Desperate for work.
Belladonna hires her almost immediately.
Sophia happens to be there.
What had felt like bad luck now felt designed.
"They put me there."
Dante shook his head.
"Why would Vincent put you near Sophia?"
Bennett answered.
"To watch you."
Clara stared at her.
"Or to see whether Elena had left you instructions tied to the child."
Bennett pointed at Rebecca's file.
"Vincent knew Rebecca and Elena communicated."
"He may have believed Clara inherited something he could not find."
Dante looked toward Sophia.
"And he assumed Sophia would never speak."
Clara felt cold.
That was the mistake.
Vincent had controlled every variable except kindness.
He could arrange a job.
He could force a diner to close through a landlord or creditor.
He could track Clara's shifts.
He could monitor Sophia.
But he could not predict that Clara would treat a silent child like a child instead of a problem.
He could not predict the paper birds.
The sugar-packet towers.
The chocolate heart.
He could not predict Sophia deciding she finally felt safe enough to speak.
"Julian."
The first word had detonated a plan seven years in the making.
Elias opened another file on the token.
"I found Vincent's current operational schedule."
Bennett moved beside him.
There were dates, initials, and locations.
One entry was scheduled for that evening.
BELLADONNA - 21:30 - J.V. - CLOSE.
Julian went pale.
"That's me."
Dante looked at him.
"Close what?"
Julian's voice was flat.
"Loose ends."
Bennett turned.
"You think he's planning to kill you?"
Julian laughed without humor.
"I know he is."
Dante stared at the entry.
Then at the restaurant where everything had begun.
"Good."
Clara looked at him.
"Good?"
Dante's expression became cold and precise.
"For the first time, we know where Vincent plans to be before he gets there."
Bennett folded her arms.
"You're thinking trap."
"I'm thinking dinner."
"With federal surveillance."
Dante looked at her.
"Call it whatever helps with the paperwork."
Bennett almost smiled.
Then Elias opened the final document on Tomas's token.
It was a scanned instruction sheet.
At the top was the Belladonna floor plan.
One table was circled in red.
Table 7.
Sophia's usual table.
Beneath it, Vincent had written a single order.
IF THE GIRL SPEAKS, REMOVE CLARA FIRST.
Clara stared at the words.
May you like
The order was dated three months earlier.
The same week she started working at Belladonna.
