Chapter 9 - ROOM 317

Adam held the small phone while Evelyn watched him from the screen.
Grace sat behind her beneath a single hanging light.
The wall was concrete.
A narrow window showed darkness beyond the glass.
There were no obvious details revealing the location.
âLet her go,â Adam said.
Evelyn tilted her head.
âWhich one of you is speaking?â
âI am.â
âI was asking Lena.â
Ortiz stepped into view.
âMy name is Detective Ortiz.â
Graceâs eyes filled.
âLena.â
The sound of her name in Graceâs voice changed the room.
Ortiz gripped the edge of the table.
Evelyn smiled.
âYou see how emotional reunions complicate judgment.â
âYou kidnapped her,â Ortiz said.
âI relocated a vulnerable patient.â
âYou used a false identity to hold her for thirty-eight years.â
âGrace required supervision.â
Grace turned toward Evelyn.
âYou required silence.â
Evelynâs smile disappeared.
Adam leaned toward the phone.
âWhat do you want?â
âThe Bell House ledger.â
âYou already know what it contains.â
âI want the original.â
âWe copied it.â
âCopies can be challenged.â
âSo can the original.â
âNot with Graceâs testimony.â
Ortizâs voice hardened.
âYou plan to kill her after the exchange.â
Evelyn looked almost offended.
âI have kept Grace alive for nearly four decades.â
âYou kept her imprisoned.â
âI kept her where she could not damage my family.â
âShe is your familyâs victim.â
âShe is the woman who attempted to take my husband.â
Grace laughed softly.
The sound held no humor.
âJonathan was already leaving you.â
Evelyn turned.
âYou always believed that.â
âHe gave me the falcon pendant.â
âHe gave gifts to many women.â
âHe gave me two children.â
Evelyn struck the chair back with one hand.
The camera shook.
Adam saw Grace flinch.
âDo not touch her,â he said.
Evelyn looked into the camera again.
âBring the ledger to the old Carter boathouse at midnight.â
âWhere is it?â
âYour uncle knows.â
Victor nodded once.
âCome alone,â Evelyn continued.
âYou know I wonât.â
âThen choose one companion.â
âGrace walks out first.â
âThe ledger arrives first.â
âNo.â
Evelynâs voice softened.
âYou have already wasted sixty seconds when Lily needed you.â
Adam went still.
She knew exactly where to cut him.
âDo not waste Graceâs remaining time.â
The call ended.
Ortiz took the phone.
âWe trace it.â
Victor shook his head.
âDisposable relay.â
âThen we trace the background.â
âThere was no sound.â
âWindow angle.â
âThe boathouse may not be the current location.â
Adam opened the ledger.
âWe make a copy that looks original.â
Evelyn would examine the binding, ink, and paper.
A simple replacement would fail.
The bank manager entered after hearing raised voices.
Victor asked whether the bank maintained document reproduction services.
The manager shook his head.
Ortiz looked at the ledger.
âWe do not need to fool her for long.â
Adam closed the book.
âWe take the original.â
âNo,â Victor said.
âIt is the only leverage we have.â
âIt is also the only complete record.â
âWe copied every page.â
âCopies will be attacked in court.â
âGrace matters more than paper.â
Ortiz looked at Adam.
âShe is my mother.â
âI know.â
âI need to say it.â
Adam nodded.
Ortiz repeated the words.
âShe is my mother.â
Victor turned away.
Ortiz saw him.
âYou helped take me from her.â
âYes.â
âYou knew she was alive.â
âYes.â
âYou let me spend my life believing I had been abandoned.â
âYes.â
Ortiz crossed the room.
She struck him once across the face.
Victor accepted it.
âYou do not get to look sorry,â she said.
âI am not asking for mercy.â
âGood.â
She turned to Adam.
âWe take the ledger.â
They returned to the hospital before preparing for the exchange.
Lily listened from her bed.
When Adam told her Grace was alive, she cried quietly.
Not from sadness alone.
From relief that the truth had survived.
âEvelyn wants you at midnight,â Lily said.
âYes.â
âShe will not honor the exchange.â
âI know.â
âThen what is the plan?â
âOrtiz goes with me.â
âEvelyn will expect Victor.â
âVictor will be nearby.â
Lily looked at her husband.
âYou still trust him too much.â
âI do not trust him.â
âYou keep using him.â
âHe knows the properties.â
âHe also knows how your mother thinks because he spent decades helping her.â
Victor stood near the door.
âThat is accurate.â
Lilyâs gaze moved to him.
âYou watched Mercer enter my bedroom.â
âYes.â
âYou could have stopped him.â
âYes.â
âYou did not.â
âNo.â
âWhy should any of us believe you will act differently tonight?â
Victor held her gaze.
âYou should not believe it.â
âThen leave.â
Adam looked at Lily.
âLily.â
âNo.â
Her voice remained weak but firm.
âHe does not get to stand in this room while everyone treats his honesty like courage.â
Victor lowered his eyes.
Lily continued.
âAdmitting what you did is not the same as repairing it.â
âI know.â
âThen begin somewhere else.â
Victor left without defending himself.
Adam sat beside Lily.
âYou were right.â
âAbout what?â
âHim.â
âI may be wrong.â
âThat would be unusual.â
A faint smile touched her lips.
Then disappeared.
âYou need him tonight.â
âProbably.â
âNeed is not trust.â
Adam nodded.
Dr. Kim entered with new test results.
âThe medication is clearing.â
âHow is the baby?â Adam asked.
âStable.â
âCan Lily remain here?â
âYes.â
Dr. Kim looked toward the door.
âBut the hospitalâs legal department is challenging my authority.â
âBecause of the transfer order.â
âJudge Wren expanded it.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âShe appointed Evelyn temporary medical guardian of the unborn child.â
Adam felt rage rise again.
âCan she enter?â
âDavid is blocking access while our attorneys seek an emergency review.â
âHow long?â
âHours.â
Adam looked at the clock.
They had less than seven hours before midnight.
Ortiz contacted federal prosecutors.
The Bell House ledger created a basis for fraud and trafficking investigations.
Graceâs kidnapping added urgency.
The prosecutors agreed to assist but demanded operational control of the exchange.
Adam refused.
Ortiz argued with him in the corridor.
âYou are not trained for this.â
âShe asked for me.â
âShe expects you to behave emotionally.â
âShe knows I will come.â
âThat does not mean you lead.â
âWill federal agents guarantee Grace survives?â
âNo one can guarantee that.â
âThen I choose the risk.â
Ortiz studied him.
âYou sound like Jonathan.â
âYou barely knew him.â
âI know how he wrote.â
She held up his recorded statement from the ledger files.
âHe kept apologizing for waiting.â
Adam looked through the glass at Lily.
âI already waited once.â
At eleven-thirty, they left the hospital.
The Carter boathouse stood on a private lake north of the city.
Jonathan had taught Adam to sail there.
Evelyn had hosted summer parties on the lawn.
The property had remained empty since Jonathanâs death.
Adam drove alone in the visible vehicle.
The ledger sat inside a weatherproof case on the passenger seat.
Ortiz and federal agents followed without lights from a distance.
Victor had disappeared after leaving Lilyâs room.
He did not answer calls.
The boathouse lights were on when Adam arrived.
He carried the case to the dock.
Cold wind moved across the black water.
âEvelyn?â
A speaker crackled above the door.
âPlace the case on the bench.â
âShow me Grace.â
The interior lights brightened.
Grace sat inside the boathouse.
Her hands were no longer bound.
She looked toward Adam through the glass.
Evelyn stood behind her.
Adam placed the case on the bench.
âSend her out.â
âOpen the ledger.â
He did.
âTurn to page forty-two.â
Adam found the page.
It listed Graceâs second pregnancy.
Evelyn examined it through a camera.
âRemove the page.â
âNo.â
âThen Grace remains.â
âYou need the entire ledger.â
âI need that page first.â
âWhy?â
Evelyn smiled faintly.
âBecause it contains the only record proving Jonathan was your father.â
Adam looked down.
The page contained blood type information, witness signatures, and the original delivery record.
âIf you destroy this, you can challenge my inheritance.â
âI do not care about your inheritance.â
âYou care about control.â
âI care about what I built.â
âYou built it on stolen children.â
âI built it after men spent generations treating women like decorative property.â
âYou became worse than the men you hated.â
Evelynâs eyes hardened.
âRemove the page.â
Adam tore it carefully from the binding.
Grace watched him.
âDo not give it to her,â she called.
Evelyn moved behind her.
A door opened at the far side of the boathouse.
Mercer stepped inside.
Adam stared.
âYou were arrested.â
Mercer smiled.
âJudge Wren found procedural irregularities.â
Ortiz had warned him that influence could erase ordinary rules.
Mercer took Grace by the arm.
âPage first,â he said.
Adam held it over the water.
âRelease her.â
Mercer pushed Grace toward the dock.
She took one step.
Then the lights went out.
A struggle sounded inside.
Adam ran forward.
A gunshot cracked over the lake.
The lights returned.
Grace was on the floor.
Mercer had vanished.
Evelyn stood beside the open rear door.
Victor lay against the wall, one hand pressed to his side.
He had entered through the service passage.
Grace looked at Adam.
âDo not let Evelyn reach Lily,â she whispered.
âWhy?â
May you like
Graceâs eyes moved toward the ledger.
âBecause Lilyâs name is already inside it.â
