Chapter 4 - THE MISSING ENVELOPE

Adam stood on the sidewalk holding Detective Ortizâs broken phone.
The morning traffic continued around him.
A taxi sounded its horn.
A bus pulled away from the curb.
People hurried past with coffee cups and umbrellas.
No one seemed to notice that a police detective had vanished from the center of downtown Chicago.
Adam looked inside Ortizâs car.
The keys remained in the ignition.
Her badge lay on the passenger seat.
A paper cup had spilled across the floor.
There was no obvious sign of a struggle.
The bank manager hovered several feet away.
âShould I call the police?â
Adam turned toward him.
âYes.â
The manager reached for his phone.
Adam stopped him.
âUse the bankâs landline.â
âWhy?â
âBecause someone may be monitoring mobile calls.â
The manager stared at him.
âGo.â
The man hurried inside.
Adam examined the message again.
BRING THE FILES TO YOUR UNCLE.
The photograph proved someone had been inside the bank.
Someone had watched him retrieve Box 218.
He turned toward the surrounding buildings.
Hundreds of windows reflected the gray morning.
Any one of them could hide an observer.
Adam called Victor Hale.
His uncle answered immediately.
âAdam.â
âWhere are you?â
âAt the office.â
âStay there.â
Victor was silent.
âWhat happened?â
âYou tell me.â
âI have no idea what you mean.â
âA detective disappeared outside First Chicago Bank.â
Another pause followed.
âWhat were you doing at the bank?â
Adamâs grip tightened around the phone.
âI never told you which bank.â
Victor exhaled.
âListen carefully.â
âNo.â
âDo not take the files to the police.â
âYou know about the files.â
âI know enough to understand that you are in danger.â
âWere you in my apartment?â
âNo.â
âDo you have my fatherâs ring?â
Victor did not answer.
Adam looked toward the bank.
âLily saw someone wearing it.â
âWhere is Lily now?â
âAnswer me.â
âIs she protected?â
âFrom you?â
âFrom Evelyn.â
Adam froze.
âYou expect me to believe you are afraid of your own sister?â
âYou have no idea what Evelyn is capable of.â
âI am beginning to.â
âThen stop behaving like a man who believes ordinary rules still apply.â
âWhere is Ortiz?â
âI donât know.â
âThe message told me to bring the files to you.â
âThat message did not come from me.â
âProve it.â
âCome to the Carter Tower.â
âAlone?â
âNo.â
Victorâs answer came quickly.
âBring whoever you trust most.â
Adam almost laughed.
âThat list is becoming very short.â
âThen bring no one.â
The call ended.
Uniformed officers arrived within minutes.
Adam gave them Ortizâs phone but did not mention the contents of Box 218.
He told them the detective had been waiting for him.
He described the open car and the message.
A lieutenant named Mark Ellis took control of the scene.
Ellis had attended several Carter Foundation events.
Adam remembered seeing him shake Evelynâs hand at a police scholarship dinner.
âDetective Ortiz may have left voluntarily,â Ellis said.
âShe left her badge.â
âShe could have been responding to an emergency.â
âWithout her phone?â
âWe are reviewing nearby cameras.â
âThe bank has cameras.â
âWe will request them.â
Adam watched Ellis.
âRequest them now.â
The lieutenantâs expression cooled.
âWe understand your concern.â
âThat phrase usually means nothing will happen.â
Ellis lowered his voice.
âMr. Carter, your family name does not give you command authority.â
âMy family name may be the reason your detective is missing.â
Ellis stepped closer.
âYou should return to the hospital.â
âThat sounds like an order.â
âIt is advice.â
Adam looked across the street.
A black sedan was parked half a block away.
The windows were tinted.
As he watched, it pulled into traffic.
He memorized the license plate.
Then he returned to the vault.
The bank manager allowed him back into the private room.
Adam copied every document using his phone.
He placed one flash drive in his shoe.
He hid the second beneath the lining of his belt.
He left the digital recorder and original folders inside the box.
Then he carried the photograph and birth certificate in an envelope beneath his shirt.
Before leaving, he instructed the manager to restrict access to Box 218.
âOnly I may open it.â
âWhat about your wife?â
âOnly me.â
The manager nodded.
âAnd if I die?â
The manâs face changed.
âMr. Carter.â
âIf I die, release the contents to three news organizations and the United States Attorneyâs Office.â
âIâm not certain the bank can follow such an instruction verbally.â
âThen prepare the documents.â
Adam signed them before leaving.
He did not go to Carter Tower.
He returned to the hospital.
Lily was asleep.
Dr. Kim stood near the monitor reviewing test results.
âHow is she?â
âStable.â
âAnd the baby?â
âStill strong.â
Adam lowered his voice.
âCan I move her?â
âNot safely.â
âMy mother knows she is here.â
âShe cannot enter this wing.â
âShe controls people who can.â
Dr. Kim looked toward the hallway.
âI requested a police officer.â
âWhich officer?â
âI donât know yet.â
âCancel it.â
âAdam.â
âA detective helping us just disappeared.â
Dr. Kim studied his face.
âYouâre serious.â
âYes.â
âThen who protects Lily?â
âI do.â
âYou cannot be awake every second.â
âI will hire private security.â
âFrom which company?â
Adam realized the problem.
Most elite security firms in Chicago had worked for the Carter family.
Victor had selected many of them.
Evelyn knew their directors personally.
âI need someone outside the family network.â
Dr. Kim thought for a moment.
âMy brother runs security for a federal courthouse.â
âCan you trust him?â
âWith my life.â
âCan Lily trust him with hers?â
âYes.â
âCall him.â
Dr. Kim stepped into the hallway.
Lily opened her eyes.
âYou went to the bank.â
Adam sat beside her.
âI found the original birth certificate.â
She searched his face.
âGrace Bell?â
âMy biological mother.â
Lily squeezed his hand.
âIâm sorry.â
âFor what?â
âFor being right.â
Adam looked down.
âMy father knew.â
âHow?â
âHe recorded a message before he died.â
âDid he say where Grace is?â
âA private facility under another name.â
âWhich facility?â
âHe didnât say.â
âWas there anything about the trust?â
Adam nodded.
âThe birth of our child releases sealed records to an independent trustee.â
Lilyâs hand moved over her stomach.
âThat is why Evelyn came.â
âShe wanted to prevent the trigger.â
âOr delay it.â
âWhat is the difference?â
âIf the trust requires a verified live birth, she could not allow the record to exist.â
Adamâs jaw tightened.
âShe was going to erase our son.â
Lily looked toward the window.
âAdam, there is something else about the trust.â
âWhat?â
âClaire said Jonathan left a sealed envelope with his attorney.â
âWhich attorney?â
âSamuel Brennan.â
Adam knew the name.
Brennan had represented Jonathan for most of his career.
He had retired after Jonathanâs death and moved to Wisconsin.
âWhy didnât Claire mention that before?â
âShe did not know what was inside.â
âDid my mother know?â
âProbably.â
Adam searched for Brennanâs number.
The old office line was disconnected.
A public records search showed an address near Lake Geneva.
Adam called Victor again.
His uncle answered.
âYou were supposed to come to the tower.â
âI changed my mind.â
âThat is becoming a family habit.â
âWhere is Samuel Brennan?â
Victor was silent.
âWhy do you want him?â
âMy father left him an envelope.â
âWho told you that?â
âWhere is he?â
âBrennan died six months ago.â
Adam leaned back.
âHow?â
âStroke.â
âWho handled his estate?â
âHis daughter.â
âName?â
âRebecca Brennan.â
âWhere is she?â
âI donât know.â
âThat is a lie.â
âAdam, you are chasing fragments without understanding the people behind them.â
âThen explain.â
âI cannot do that over the phone.â
âYou keep asking me to meet you.â
âBecause Evelyn will know every place you go.â
âShe knows Iâm at the hospital.â
âYes.â
Victorâs voice lowered.
âAnd that is exactly where she wants you.â
The line went dead.
Adam immediately checked the hallway.
Two nurses moved between rooms.
A janitor pushed a cart toward the service elevator.
A man in a dark uniform stood near the exit.
Dr. Kim returned with her brother.
His name was David Kim.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, and wore a plain navy suit.
He carried himself with the calm alertness of someone accustomed to danger.
âRachel explained the situation,â he said.
âYou believe her?â
âI believe my sister.â
âThat is more than I did for my wife.â
David did not respond.
âI need two people at the door,â Adam continued.
âNo one enters without Dr. Kimâs approval.â
âI can arrange that.â
âI also need the service corridors checked.â
âAlready started.â
Adam gave him the black sedanâs license plate.
David sent it to a contact.
Then Adam left for Wisconsin.
He hated leaving Lily.
She made him promise to return before dark.
Dr. Kimâs brother remained outside her room.
Adam drove north through steady rain.
The Brennan house stood near the edge of a frozen lake.
Rebecca Brennan answered the door holding a mug of tea.
She was in her fifties and had her fatherâs sharp blue eyes.
When Adam introduced himself, she nearly dropped the cup.
âYou should not be here.â
âMy father left an envelope with Samuel.â
Rebecca looked past him toward the road.
âCome inside.â
The house smelled of cedar and books.
Boxes filled the dining room.
Rebecca locked the door behind him.
âMy father spent the last six months of his life afraid,â she said.
âAfraid of Evelyn?â
âHe never used her name.â
âDid he give you the envelope?â
âHe told me where it was.â
âWhere?â
âIn a wall safe behind his office shelves.â
âDo you still have it?â
Rebecca looked toward the hallway.
âSomeone broke into the house after his funeral.â
Adamâs heart sank.
âThey found the safe?â
âYes.â
âThe envelope is gone?â
Rebecca nodded.
âAlong with several files.â
âDid you report it?â
âThe police said there was no evidence anything valuable had been taken.â
âWho knew about the safe?â
âMy father.â
âYou?â
âAnd Jonathan Carter.â
Adam walked toward the office.
The shelves had been moved back into place.
Rebecca opened a panel.
The steel safe behind it showed scratches around the lock.
âWas there anything left?â
âOne thing.â
She reached into a desk drawer.
It was a sealed card bearing Jonathanâs handwriting.
The front read FOR ADAM.
Adam opened it carefully.
Inside was a single sentence.
THE WOMAN WHO CALLS HERSELF YOUR MOTHER WILL COME FOR YOUR CHILD.
Beneath the sentence was a phone number.
Adam called it.
A recorded voice answered.
âCedar Hills Residential Care.â
He wrote down the address.
Rebecca watched him.
âWhat is Cedar Hills?â
âA private medical facility.â
âFor whom?â
Adam looked at the photograph of Grace Bell.
âPossibly my real mother.â
His phone rang before he could say more.
It was David Kim.
Adam answered immediately.
âWhat happened?â
Davidâs voice was controlled but urgent.
âSomeone issued a transfer order for Lily.â
âWho?â
âDr. Thomas Mercer.â
âDo not let them move her.â
âWe stopped the transport team.â
Adam grabbed his coat.
âIs she safe?â
âFor now.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âThe order was approved by a judge.â
âWhich judge?â
âEleanor Wren.â
Adam knew Judge Wren.
She had been Evelynâs closest friend for thirty years.
David continued.
âThe order declares Lily mentally incompetent.â
âOn what grounds?â
âA physician submitted a statement claiming she attempted to harm herself and her unborn child.â
Adam felt cold fury move through him.
âWhich physician?â
May you like
David paused.
âThe statement bears your signature.â
