Chapter 5 - THE MAN WEARING THE RING

Adam drove back toward Chicago through sheets of rain.
The windshield wipers moved at their highest speed.
They still could not clear the glass fast enough.
His supposed signature appeared on a legal declaration claiming Lily had injured herself.
The document stated that Adam feared his wife was experiencing pregnancy-related psychosis.
It requested emergency transfer to a psychiatric facility operated by a Carter Foundation subsidiary.
Adam had never seen the declaration.
He had never signed it.
Someone had forged his name.
David Kim sent photographs of the pages.
The signature was nearly perfect.
Even Adam needed several seconds to identify the flaw.
He always crossed the final letter of Carter with a slightly upward stroke.
The forged version angled downward.
That was the only visible difference.
The declaration had been notarized by Victor Haleâs executive assistant.
Adam called Victor.
No answer.
He called again.
Victor declined the call.
Adam sent a message.
YOUR OFFICE FORGED MY SIGNATURE.
Victor responded thirty seconds later.
COME TO THE TOWER.
Adam called David.
âIs Lily still in her room?â
âYes.â
âHas anyone attempted to enforce the transfer?â
âTwo hospital attorneys are outside the wing.â
âDo not let them near her.â
âI need legal authority to block a court order.â
âYou have my authority.â
âThat may not be enough.â
âThen use the toxicology report.â
âDr. Kim is preparing it.â
âIâm going to Carter Tower.â
âThat sounds unwise.â
âMy uncleâs office notarized the forged document.â
âCall the police.â
âA police detective disappeared while helping me.â
David was silent.
âSend me your location,â he said.
âWhy?â
âSo I know where to look.â
Adam entered the city shortly after noon.
Carter Tower rose above the river, forty-eight stories of glass and steel.
Jonathan Carter had built the original company from a regional construction firm into a national investment group.
After his death, Evelyn and Victor had transformed the foundation into the public face of the family.
Adam handled the commercial holdings.
Victor managed trusts and governance.
Evelyn controlled reputation.
Adam now understood that reputation had been her most effective weapon.
No one suspected the woman who funded neonatal units of attacking a pregnant woman.
No one questioned the physician who delivered their children.
No one imagined a respected family foundation had hidden the theft of infants.
Adam entered the underground garage.
Victorâs black Mercedes was parked beside the private elevator.
Adam took the stairs instead.
He emerged on the executive floor and walked through the silent reception area.
Victorâs assistant, Margaret Sloan, stood behind her desk.
Her face lost color when she saw him.
âMr. Carter.â
âYou notarized a declaration with my forged signature.â
âI was told you signed electronically.â
âBy whom?â
She looked toward Victorâs office.
Adam pushed through the double doors.
Victor stood beside the windows with a glass of water in one hand.
He was fifty-eight, tall, and lean.
His dark hair had turned silver at the temples.
He wore a perfectly tailored gray suit.
On his right hand was Jonathanâs signet ring.
Adam crossed the room and struck the glass from Victorâs hand.
It shattered against the wall.
âYou were in my apartment.â
Victor looked at the broken glass.
âYes.â
The admission stopped Adam.
âYou watched them hurt Lily.â
âI tried to prevent it.â
âYou stood in the hallway.â
âI arrived after Evelyn and Mercer.â
âYou had three minutes.â
Victorâs eyes sharpened.
âShe remembers that?â
âShe remembers your ring.â
Victor looked down at his hand.
âI wanted her to see it.â
âWhy?â
âSo you would know the night was connected to Jonathan.â
âYou could have spoken to me.â
âYou would have told Evelyn.â
âNo.â
âThe man you were yesterday would have.â
Adam hated that Victor might be right.
âWhat did you take from the apartment?â
âThe medical bag.â
âWhere is it?â
âSafe.â
âGive it to the police.â
âWhich police?â
âDetective Ortiz.â
âShe is alive.â
Adam stepped closer.
âHow do you know?â
âI arranged for her removal.â
âYou kidnapped a detective?â
âI removed her before Evelynâs people reached her.â
âWhere is she?â
âIn a secure apartment.â
âDoes she know you are supposedly protecting her?â
âShe was not pleased.â
Adam reached for his phone.
Victor raised one hand.
âIf you call anyone, you may expose the location.â
âYou expect me to trust you.â
âNo.â
âThen give me evidence.â
Victor opened a cabinet behind his desk.
Inside was the black medical bag.
He placed it on the table.
The bag contained two unopened ampules, syringes, gloves, and a small tablet computer.
Adam turned on the tablet.
A patient file appeared.
LILY CARTER.
The notes described a planned emergency admission following a pregnancy loss.
The event had been documented before it occurred.
âThey prepared the hospital record in advance,â Adam said.
âYes.â
âMercer expected Lily to lose the baby.â
âYes.â
âAnd you knew?â
âI discovered the plan forty minutes before they entered your apartment.â
âWhy didnât you call me?â
âI tried.â
Adam checked his phone.
There had been no missed calls from Victor.
âI used an encrypted line.â
âI do not have an encrypted phone.â
âJonathan gave you one.â
âMy father has been dead twelve years.â
âHe left it in your study.â
Adam remembered an old black phone inside a locked drawer.
He had never found a charger and assumed it was obsolete.
âYou could have called the police.â
âEvelyn has spent thirty years building relationships with law enforcement.â
âSo you did nothing?â
âI went to the apartment.â
âYou waited in the hallway.â
âI disabled the service camera so Mercer could not later claim someone else entered.â
âYou deleted evidence?â
âI copied it first.â
Victor opened another drawer.
He removed a flash drive.
âThe full recording shows Evelyn and Mercer carrying the bag inside.â
Adam stared at it.
âWhy didnât you stop them?â
âI needed Mercer to open the bag.â
âYou used my wife as bait.â
âI did not know he had already sedated her.â
âYou knew enough.â
Victorâs face tightened.
âYes.â
Adam hit him.
Victor staggered backward against the desk.
Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.
He did not fight back.
Adam grabbed his jacket.
âMy wife could have lost our son.â
âI know.â
âYou stood close enough to hear her.â
âI know.â
âYou let her believe no one would help.â
Victorâs voice lowered.
âI was trying to expose a conspiracy that survived Jonathan, three federal audits, and two grand juries.â
âYou should have saved Lily.â
âYes.â
Victor did not defend himself.
That made Adam angrier.
He released him.
âWhy are you wearing the ring?â
âI took it from Jonathan before the casket closed.â
âWhy?â
âBecause he asked me to.â
Adam stared at him.
âMy father was dead.â
âHe gave me instructions the night before.â
âThe recording said not to trust you.â
Victor looked toward the windows.
âI know.â
âWhy would he tell me that?â
âBecause he did not know whether I would choose you or Evelyn.â
âWhich did you choose?â
âFor twelve years?â
Victor met his eyes.
âMyself.â
At least the answer was honest.
âWhat does the forged declaration have to do with you?â
âMy assistant notarized it after receiving authorization from Evelyn.â
âYou allowed that?â
âI was not in the office.â
âMargaret works for you.â
âShe has worked for Evelyn since before I hired her.â
Adam looked toward the reception area.
Margaretâs desk was empty.
âShe is gone.â
Victor checked the internal camera.
The private elevator had descended.
âShe took something,â he said.
âWhat?â
Victor opened his safe.
Several folders remained inside.
One compartment was empty.
âThe Brennan envelope.â
âYou had it?â
âI recovered it from the person who broke into Brennanâs house.â
âWho?â
âMercer.â
âWhat was in it?â
âI never opened it.â
âWhy not?â
âIt was sealed with a legal trigger.â
âWhat trigger?â
âThe verified birth of Jonathanâs first grandchild.â
Adam laughed bitterly.
âEveryone keeps waiting for my son to be born.â
âBecause the envelope transfers control of the Carter Trust.â
âTo whom?â
âI donât know.â
âYou expect me to believe that?â
âThe trust documents were divided among three custodians.â
âWho?â
âBrennan.â
âDead.â
âClaire Donovan.â
âMissing?â
Victor nodded.
âAnd the third?â
âGrace Bell.â
Adam stepped back.
âMy biological mother.â
âYes.â
âIs she alive?â
âShe was six months ago.â
âWhere?â
âCedar Hills.â
Adam thought of the phone number in Jonathanâs card.
âWhy has no one found her?â
âShe has lived under the name Eleanor Gray for thirty-eight years.â
âEleanor?â
âEvelyn chose it.â
The cruelty of that detail struck him.
âWhat happened to Grace?â
âMercer declared her delusional after you were born.â
âDid my father know?â
âNot until years later.â
âWhy didnât he free her?â
âHe tried.â
âAnd then he died.â
Victor nodded.
Adam picked up the black bag.
âIâm taking this.â
âYou cannot walk out with it.â
âWatch me.â
âIf Evelyn knows you have it, she will stop pretending this is a family dispute.â
âShe attacked Lily.â
âThat was restraint.â
Adam looked at him.
âWhat does she do when she stops pretending?â
Victorâs phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed as he listened.
âWhen?â
He ended the call and turned to Adam.
âCedar Hills reported a patient escape.â
âGrace?â
âYes.â
âDid she escape?â
âNo.â
âHow do you know?â
âBecause the facilityâs west gate camera shows her leaving in Evelynâs car.â
Adam moved toward the door.
Victor blocked him.
âYou cannot go after them without knowing where they are.â
âMove.â
âMy people are tracing the vehicle.â
âYour people allowed Evelyn to control your office.â
âMy people are replaceable.â
âMy mother is not.â
Victorâs face softened for the first time.
âGrace is your mother.â
Adam stared at him.
The words felt unfamiliar.
Victor continued.
âEvelyn is the woman who raised you.â
âShe is the woman who tried to erase my child.â
âYes.â
âAnd you are still protecting her.â
âNo.â
Victor removed the signet ring.
He placed it in Adamâs palm.
âI am giving you the only thing Jonathan trusted me to keep.â
Adam closed his fingers around the ring.
âWhat did he say when he gave it to you?â
Victorâs eyes lowered.
âHe said that when the ring returned to his son, the Carter family would finally be forced to choose between its name and the truth.â
A loud sound came from the reception area.
The office doors flew open.
Lieutenant Mark Ellis entered with six officers.
He pointed toward Adam.
âAdam Carter, put your hands where we can see them.â
Adam looked at Victor.
âWhat is this?â
May you like
Ellis crossed the room.
âYou are under arrest for the abduction of Detective Lena Ortiz.â
