Chapter 12 - VICTORâS CONFESSION

Lily stared at Dr. Kim.
âI never authorized a prenatal paternity test.â
âI know,â Dr. Kim said.
Adam did not release Lilyâs hand.
The report claimed he was not the babyâs father.
The first time doubt had appeared, he had allowed jealousy to freeze him.
He would not repeat that failure.
âThe sample is false,â he said.
Dr. Kim nodded.
âThat is my assessment.â
âHow can you tell?â Lily asked.
âThe collection date is three weeks ago.â
âI was never tested.â
âThe record claims a procedure was performed at the Carter Prenatal Center.â
âI have never been there.â
Adam looked at the document.
âWho entered the order?â
âDr. Mercer.â
âThen this is another attempt to discredit Lily.â
âYes.â
âCan we prove the sample was not hers?â
âWe can compare it with her blood.â
âHow long?â
âSeveral hours.â
Lilyâs face remained pale.
âThey planned every doubt.â
Adam squeezed her hand.
âAnd we stop treating their paperwork as truth.â
Dr. Kim collected another sample under federal observation.
The false report had already reached Charles Wren.
He submitted it to the court with a renewed request for Evelyn to receive guardianship.
Judge Wren scheduled another hearing for the next morning.
Adam realized Evelynâs strategy was not based on winning one argument.
She created so many competing claims that truth became difficult to identify.
If Adam was not Jonathanâs son, he lacked authority.
If Lilyâs baby was not Adamâs, the trust might not activate.
If Lily was unstable, her testimony could be dismissed.
If Adam abducted Ortiz, he could be declared unfit.
Each lie supported another.
Victor asked to see Adam privately.
He had been moved to a secured hospital suite.
Adam entered alone.
Victor looked smaller beneath the white sheets.
A bandage covered his side.
âYou saved Grace,â Adam said.
âI arrived late.â
âYou still entered the boathouse.â
âI knew the service tunnel.â
âWhy did Evelyn shoot you?â
âShe was aiming at Grace.â
Adamâs jaw tightened.
âYou moved between them.â
âYes.â
âThat does not erase what you did before.â
âNo.â
Victor looked toward the window.
âI need to tell you about the second ledger.â
âYou said Mercer had it.â
âHe does.â
âWhat is in Lilyâs record?â
âSamuel Brennanâs name.â
âIs he her father?â
âProbably.â
âThat is not enough.â
âThere is a recording.â
âOf Brennan?â
âOf Anne Donovan.â
Lilyâs mother.
âWhat did she say?â
âShe described Mercerâs arrangement.â
âWhich arrangement?â
âBrennan represented several Bell House patients.â
âDid he know babies were being taken?â
âAt first, no.â
âAnd later?â
âHe discovered the truth after Anne became pregnant.â
âWith Lily.â
âYes.â
âWhy didnât he expose Mercer?â
âEvelyn threatened Anne.â
Adam stared at him.
âBrennan chose silence.â
âHe gathered evidence quietly.â
âLike my father.â
âYes.â
âAnd both men died.â
Victor looked at him.
âBrennanâs stroke may not have been natural.â
âMercer.â
âMost likely.â
âWhy did Rebecca tell me someone stole the envelope?â
âBecause Mercer did.â
âAnd you recovered it.â
âYes.â
âBut Margaret took it from your office.â
âYes.â
âWhere is she?â
âFederal custody.â
âHas she spoken?â
âShe asked for immunity.â
âWill she receive it?â
âThat depends on what she knows.â
âWhat does she know?â
Victorâs voice lowered.
âShe knows where Mercer stores the second ledger.â
Adam leaned forward.
âWhere?â
âAn underground archive beneath the old Carter Womenâs Clinic.â
âWe were there.â
âYou were on the upper level.â
âHow do we enter the archive?â
âMercerâs biometric key.â
âHe is a fugitive.â
âMargaret has a copied fingerprint.â
Adam stood.
âWhy did she help him?â
âShe believed Evelyn would make her Foundation director.â
âShe forged my signature.â
âShe forged many.â
âDid she create the false prenatal record?â
âShe entered it.â
âWhose sample did they use?â
Victor hesitated.
âMine.â
Adam stared at him.
âYour DNA?â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âTo ensure the report excluded you.â
âThen the sample will show the child is related to me.â
Victor nodded.
âWe share family markers through Evelyn.â
âEvelyn is not my biological mother.â
Victorâs expression changed.
âYou are right.â
âThen why use your sample?â
âMercer believed Evelyn was your mother.â
âNo.â
Adam studied him.
âYou knew she was not.â
âYes.â
âMercer knew too.â
âMaybe the sample came from someone else.â
âWho?â
Victor looked uncomfortable.
âThere is one possibility.â
âSay it.â
âDaniel Price.â
âMy assistant?â
âEvelyn paid him.â
Adam remembered that Daniel knew about his early flight.
He had access to schedules, medical insurance records, and family accounts.
âIs he the biological father?â Adam asked.
âNo.â
âDid Lily know him personally?â
âHe worked with her on Foundation archives.â
Lily had taken calls on the balcony.
Evelyn had pointed to those calls.
Adam felt the old mechanism activating.
Doubt.
Suggestion.
Suspicion.
He stopped it.
âEvelyn wants me to believe they had an affair.â
âYes.â
âDid they?â
âI do not know.â
âThen you should not have raised it.â
Victor lowered his eyes.
âYou are learning faster than I did.â
Adam left the room and returned to Lily.
He told her about Daniel.
She did not appear surprised.
âHe helped me find Claire,â she said.
âWhy did you hide that?â
âI did not hide it.â
âYou never mentioned him.â
âYou never asked who helped with the archive search.â
Adam breathed slowly.
This was the moment Evelyn had designed.
âHe knew I was coming home early,â Adam said.
âYes.â
âVictor says Evelyn paid him.â
Lilyâs face tightened.
âI did not know that.â
âDid you meet him outside work?â
âTwice.â
âWhere?â
âA coffee shop.â
âWhy?â
âHe brought records he would not send electronically.â
âDid he ever come to the apartment?â
âNo.â
âDid he touch you?â
Lily stared at him.
âAdam.â
âI am asking because they used someoneâs sample.â
âThat is not what you are asking.â
He stopped.
She was right.
He had allowed the question to become accusation.
âIâm sorry.â
âYou promised.â
âI know.â
âYou promised not to treat doubt like evidence.â
âI failed.â
âYou paused.â
âIt sounded like suspicion.â
âIt felt like suspicion.â
Adam sat beside her.
âI believe the baby is mine.â
âDo you?â
âYes.â
âBecause you trust me or because you think the report is forged?â
âBoth.â
Lily looked away.
âThat should have been your first answer.â
âI am still unlearning thirty-eight years of my motherâs voice.â
âShe nearly cost us our child.â
âI know.â
âI need you to understand that your hesitation is not harmless to me.â
He nodded.
âYou are right.â
She looked back at him.
âI met Daniel because he told me Claire was in danger.â
âWas she?â
âYes.â
âWhere is she?â
âDaniel said Mercer moved her.â
âDid he say where?â
âNo.â
âWhen did you last speak to him?â
âYesterday afternoon.â
âBefore the attack.â
âYes.â
âWhat did he say?â
âThat he found the second ledger.â
Adam stood.
âWhere?â
âHe would only tell me in person.â
âDid you arrange to meet?â
âToday.â
âWhat time?â
âEight.â
The wall clock showed 7:42.
âWhere?â
âA parking garage beneath the Foundation archive.â
Adam called Ortiz.
They left ten minutes later.
The garage was nearly empty.
Danielâs car sat near the lower level.
The driverâs door was open.
Adam approached with Ortiz beside him.
Daniel lay against the steering wheel.
He was alive but barely conscious.
Ortiz called for medical assistance.
Adam found a flash drive clenched in Danielâs hand.
Daniel opened his eyes.
âLily?â
âShe is safe.â
âIâm sorry.â
âFor what?â
âI gave Evelyn your flight information.â
Adam controlled his anger.
âWhy?â
âShe said she wanted to repair your marriage.â
âYou believed her?â
âShe threatened my sister.â
âWhat happened here?â
âMercer.â
âWhere is the ledger?â
Daniel looked toward the concrete wall.
âBelow.â
âBelow the garage?â
He nodded weakly.
âThere is a freight elevator.â
âWhat opens it?â
Daniel lifted his hand.
A small key card rested beneath the flash drive.
May you like
Before losing consciousness, he whispered one final warning.
âDo not let Victor enter the archive.â
