Chapter 18 - THE LAKE HOUSE

Adam remained behind the maintenance door while federal agents positioned themselves outside the depot.
Ortiz listened through an earpiece.
Mercer stood beside the metal coffin.
Evelyn faced him across the room.
Victor leaned against a desk, pale from his wound.
Claire and Alice stood together near the wall.
Neither appeared restrained.
That made the situation more complicated.
They had entered willingly or had been persuaded to remain.
Mercer opened the coffin latch.
Evelynâs face tightened.
âYou said the body was destroyed.â
âI said the evidence was controlled.â
âYou kept Jonathan for twelve years.â
âI kept insurance.â
âAgainst me?â
âAgainst everyone.â
Victor laughed softly.
âYou always believed you were the cleverest person in the room.â
Mercer looked at him.
âAnd you always waited for stronger people to act before choosing a side.â
Claire stepped forward.
âOpen it.â
Mercer smiled.
âWhy?â
âTo prove Jonathan was poisoned.â
âThe preserved tissue proves nothing without chain of custody.â
âAlice can testify.â
All eyes moved toward the elderly nurse.
Alice held herself upright despite fear.
âI saw you inject the bottle.â
Mercerâs expression remained calm.
âYou were under medication.â
âYou gave me the medication.â
âYou signed a statement describing hallucinations.â
âAfter you threatened Emily.â
Mercer glanced toward the door.
âYour daughter has become useful.â
Adam realized Mercer did not know Emily had cooperated.
Evelyn looked at Alice.
âYou kept the blood sample.â
âYes.â
âYou could have destroyed us years ago.â
âI was afraid.â
âFear is still a choice.â
Grace had said something similar about excuses becoming permission.
Adam saw how each person in the room carried both victimhood and responsibility.
Claire turned toward Victor.
âYou approved phase two.â
âYes.â
âYou knew Lily would be targeted.â
âI knew Evelyn would try to discredit her.â
âYou gave Daniel access.â
âYes.â
âYou gave Mercer the trust trigger.â
âYes.â
âYou sent the anonymous email to Adam.â
âYes.â
Adam felt the final confirmation.
Victor had orchestrated the disclosures.
âYou wanted Adam to find everything,â Claire said.
âI wanted him to destroy Evelynâs control.â
âAt the cost of his wife.â
âI did not approve physical harm.â
Evelyn laughed.
âYou never approve the blood on the floor.â
âYou only approve the door being unlocked.â
Victor lowered his eyes.
Mercer rested his hand on the coffin.
âEnough.â
He looked at Evelyn.
âYou will transfer the remaining private accounts.â
âThe trust is frozen.â
âNot the Zurich reserve.â
Victorâs head lifted.
âThere is no Zurich reserve.â
Evelyn looked at him.
âThat is why you were never truly my partner.â
Mercer continued.
âYou transfer the reserve.â
âAnd you give me Jonathanâs body?â
âI destroy it.â
âNo.â
The word came from Evelyn with surprising force.
Adam saw something beyond fear in her face.
Possession.
Even after Jonathanâs death, she could not tolerate anyone else controlling him.
âYou loved him,â Mercer said.
Evelynâs eyes hardened.
âI built his life.â
âHe was leaving you.â
âHe was confused.â
âHe hated you at the end.â
Evelyn crossed the room and struck him.
Mercer laughed.
âYou see?â
He touched his cheek.
âThe perfect Evelyn Carter was always one insult away from becoming ordinary.â
Ortiz whispered through the earpiece.
âAgents ready.â
Adam raised one hand.
Not yet.
He wanted the confession.
Alice looked toward the coffin.
âJonathan was alive after the dinner.â
Adam stopped breathing.
Evelyn turned sharply.
âWhat?â
Alice continued.
âHis heart stopped briefly.â
âI restored it.â
Mercer stared at her.
âYou told everyone he died,â Alice said.
âHe was brain-damaged.â
âNo.â
âHe spoke.â
Evelyn looked at Mercer.
âWhat did he say?â
Mercer did not answer.
âWhat did Jonathan say?â
Aliceâs voice trembled.
âHe told Thomas that Grace and the children would expose them.â
Adamâs eyes filled.
âHe knew Lena was alive?â Claire asked.
âYes.â
âThen why keep his body?â
Alice looked at Mercer.
âBecause Jonathan lived for three more days.â
The room became silent.
Adam gripped the doorframe.
His father had not died at the dinner.
He had been hidden.
âWhat happened during those days?â Victor asked.
Alice began to cry.
âThomas questioned him about the trust.â
Mercerâs face lost its calm.
âYou were not present.â
âI heard through the wall.â
âWhat did he reveal?â Evelyn demanded.
âNothing.â
Mercer struck the coffin lid.
âHe died protecting a document that did not exist.â
âThe document existed,â Victor said.
âThe grandchild letter.â
âNo.â
Victor looked at Adamâs hidden position.
âThe document was Adam.â
Adam understood.
Jonathan knew his children would become living proof.
Mercer reached for his weapon.
Ortiz moved.
âFederal agents.â
The doors opened on both sides.
Mercer grabbed Alice.
Victor lunged toward him.
The weapon fired.
Alice fell away.
Mercer ran toward the rear platform.
Adam entered and pursued him.
Snow blew through broken windows.
Mercer reached an old rail bridge behind the depot.
The tracks crossed a frozen river.
Adam followed.
âStop.â
Mercer turned.
âYou should thank me.â
âFor what?â
âI gave you a family more interesting than the one you believed you had.â
âYou stole my fatherâs life.â
âJonathan made his choices.â
âYou poisoned him.â
âHe refused to understand survival.â
Adam stepped closer.
âGive me the weapon.â
Mercer looked toward the river.
âEvelyn will blame everything on me.â
âShe helped you.â
âShe created me.â
âNo.â
Adamâs voice remained steady.
âYou created every choice after the first.â
Mercer raised the weapon.
A shot sounded.
Mercerâs hand opened.
The gun fell between the tracks.
Ortiz stood behind Adam.
Mercer staggered against the railing.
He looked at Adam with disbelief.
Then the rusted metal gave way.
He fell onto the snow-covered embankment below.
Federal agents reached him.
He was alive.
They placed him in restraints.
Adam returned to the depot.
The coffin had been opened.
Jonathan lay inside beneath a preservation sheet.
Adam stopped several feet away.
He could not move closer.
Grace entered through the side door with federal protection.
She walked to Jonathan.
For a long moment, she simply stood beside him.
Then she touched his hair.
âYou took too long,â she whispered.
Evelyn watched from across the room.
Her face twisted.
âHe belonged to me.â
Grace looked at her.
âNo one belonged to you.â
Agents placed Evelyn under arrest.
She did not resist until they moved her away from Jonathan.
Then she fought with sudden desperation.
âDo not leave me here.â
Adam looked at her.
She had used those words against others for decades.
Now they returned to her.
âYou left everyone else,â he said.
Agents escorted her outside.
Victor sat against the wall.
His wound had reopened.
Adam approached him.
âYou escaped custody.â
âYes.â
âYou came here for the index.â
âYes.â
âDid you find it?â
Victor removed a small metal drive from his pocket.
âThis controls the remaining private accounts.â
âGive it to Ortiz.â
Victor looked at the drive.
For one second, Adam saw the temptation.
Two billion dollars had not been enough.
The Zurich reserve represented something beyond restitution.
Control still called to him.
Then Victor placed the drive in Adamâs hand.
âI do not trust myself with it.â
Adam gave it to Ortiz.
Victor lowered his head.
âI am sorry.â
Adam did not forgive him.
He also did not turn away.
âTestify,â Adam said.
âI will.â
âTell everything.â
âYes.â
âAnd accept what follows.â
Victor nodded.
Federal agents transported Jonathanâs body for examination.
Alice survived with a minor wound.
Claire was reunited with Lily later that night.
For the first time, Lily heard her motherâs recording beside the aunt who had protected it.
Noah continued improving.
Evelyn, Mercer, Judge Wren, Ellis, Martin Shaw, Margaret, and Victor were formally charged across multiple federal cases.
The story appeared to be ending.
Then the medical examiner called Adam.
The preserved body contained evidence of poisoning.
It also contained something unexpected.
May you like
Jonathan had not died three days after the board dinner.
The tissue analysis showed he had lived for nearly six months.
