Chapter 15 - THE HEARING

Adam drove toward Chicago while Ortiz coordinated with federal agents.
The trip from Marlow should have taken ninety minutes.
It felt endless.
Dr. Kim remained on the phone through an encrypted channel.
The maternity floor had entered a security lockdown at 10:17 a.m.
Electronic doors sealed automatically.
The hospitalâs control center claimed the order originated from David Kimâs credentials.
David was trapped inside a stairwell between floors.
The security system rejected all overrides.
Lilyâs contractions had intensified.
Dr. Kim had moved her into an operating room with two nurses.
âCan you deliver safely there?â Adam asked.
âWe have the necessary equipment.â
âWhat about the baby?â
âThe fetal heart rate is fluctuating.â
âTell me what that means.â
âIt means we may need to deliver soon.â
âIs Lily conscious?â
âYes.â
âLet me speak to her.â
A pause followed.
Then Lilyâs voice came through.
âAdam.â
âIâm coming.â
âYou are driving.â
âOrtiz is driving.â
That was a lie.
Ortiz looked at him from the passenger seat.
âDo not rush,â Lily whispered.
âOur son does not understand patience.â
A faint laugh escaped her.
Then she inhaled sharply through another contraction.
Adam tightened his grip on the wheel.
âStay with Dr. Kim.â
âI am.â
âAlice said Kim trained under Mercer.â
Dr. Kimâs voice returned.
âI heard that.â
âIs it true?â
âYes.â
Adam felt fear rise.
âWhy didnât you tell us?â
âBecause training under a physician does not make me his accomplice.â
âMercer trained you.â
âHe also tried to destroy my career when I reported irregular records.â
âWhat records?â
âInfant deaths at the Carter Womenâs Clinic.â
Adam glanced at Ortiz.
âWhy did Alice warn us?â
âBecause Mercer told everyone I was responsible.â
âWere you?â
âNo.â
âHow do I know?â
âYou do not.â
Dr. Kimâs honesty stopped him.
She continued.
âYou know I prevented Lilyâs transfer.â
âYou could have been protecting access to her.â
âYes.â
âYou could be part of phase two.â
âYes.â
âThen give me a reason to trust you.â
Lily spoke in the background.
âBecause I do.â
Adam closed his eyes for half a second.
Lily trusted Dr. Kim.
That had to matter.
âI believe Lily,â he said.
âGood,â Dr. Kim replied.
âThen stop interrogating me while I prepare to deliver your son.â
The call ended.
Ortiz looked at him.
âShe has a point.â
âI know.â
They were twenty minutes from the hospital when Adamâs attorney called.
Judge Wren had moved the trust hearing forward.
The hearing was beginning immediately.
âIf you fail to appear,â the attorney said, âthe court may suspend your authority.â
âMy wife is in premature labor.â
âThe judge has been informed.â
âAnd?â
âShe stated the trust matter cannot be delayed.â
Adam understood the trap.
Evelyn wanted him forced to choose.
If he attended the hearing, he abandoned Lily during labor.
If he chose Lily, Evelyn could regain control of the Foundation and hospital.
Ortiz connected the hearing through the vehicleâs display.
Judge Wren appeared.
Charles Wren sat in the courtroom.
Evelyn joined remotely.
Adamâs attorney requested postponement.
Denied.
The judge asked whether Adam was present.
His face appeared on the screen from the moving car.
âI am present.â
Judge Wren looked displeased.
âMr. Carter, court proceedings require your full attention.â
âMy wife is trapped in a locked maternity ward.â
âThe hospital is addressing the issue.â
âThe hospital board helped create it.â
âYou will confine your remarks to the trust.â
Charles Wren submitted the false prenatal report.
Adamâs attorney submitted Dr. Kimâs statement that the sample was fraudulent.
Judge Wren questioned Dr. Kimâs credibility because she had trained under Mercer.
The timing was deliberate.
Every new truth became another weapon for Evelyn.
Grace joined from the hospital.
She testified that Jonathan had intended restitution for Bell House victims.
Charles attacked her history of institutionalization.
Ortiz interrupted.
âShe was held under a false identity.â
Judge Wren threatened contempt.
Ortiz displayed the Bell House records.
The judge refused to admit them without formal authentication.
Then Rebecca Brennan entered the courtroom.
She carried her fatherâs estate file.
âMy father authenticated them before his death,â she said.
Charles Wren objected.
Rebecca presented Samuel Brennanâs sworn statement.
It named Evelyn, Mercer, Victor, and Judge Wren as participants in suppressing Bell House evidence.
The judgeâs face changed.
âMy inclusion is defamatory.â
Rebecca looked at her.
âYou signed the first sealed-record order in 1998.â
âThat matter involved child privacy.â
âIt involved your brotherâs illegally adopted son.â
Charles Wren stood.
The courtroom erupted.
Federal agents entered through the rear doors.
Ortiz had transmitted the second ledger.
The United States Attorney had issued warrants.
Judge Wren attempted to recess the hearing.
A federal prosecutor objected.
The judge was no longer neutral because she appeared in the evidence.
An appellate judge joined by emergency video and assumed control.
The trust freeze remained.
Evelyn disconnected from the hearing.
Adamâs phone rang immediately.
It was her.
He answered.
âYou lost the court.â
âNo.â
Her voice remained calm.
âI removed myself from a compromised proceeding.â
âYou are running out of institutions to hide inside.â
âI still have the one place you care about most.â
Adam looked toward the hospital in the distance.
âWhat did you do?â
âYou chose the hearing.â
âI am driving to Lily.â
âBut you looked at the screen.â
âWhere are you?â
Evelyn ignored him.
âJonathan made the same mistake.â
âWhat mistake?â
âHe believed truth mattered more than timing.â
The line went dead.
Ortiz called the hospital security command.
No response.
They reached the hospital.
Federal vehicles surrounded the main entrance.
The maternity wing remained sealed.
Smoke began rising from a service vent on the seventh floor.
Adam ran inside.
Fire crews worked to override the elevators.
David Kim emerged from the stairwell after forcing a maintenance panel.
âThe doors are magnetically sealed,â he said.
âWhere is Rachel?â
âInside operating room three.â
âIs there a fire?â
âSmoke device.â
âWhy?â
âTo force evacuation through the service corridor.â
âWho controls that corridor?â
David looked at him.
âEvelyn.â
They climbed six flights of stairs.
David broke the seventh-floor access lock with a hydraulic tool.
The doors opened.
Smoke filled the hallway.
Adam covered his mouth and ran toward operating room three.
Two nurses pushed an incubator toward him.
It was empty.
âWhere is the baby?â he asked.
The nurse stared at him.
âLily has not delivered.â
A crash sounded behind the operating room doors.
Adam entered.
Dr. Kim stood beside Lily.
A masked man was attempting to disconnect the monitor.
David tackled him.
Ortiz removed the mask.
Lieutenant Ellis.
Lily cried out as another contraction began.
Dr. Kim checked the monitor.
âWe cannot wait.â
Adam moved to Lilyâs side.
âIâm here.â
She gripped his hand.
âYou took long enough.â
âI know.â
Dr. Kim prepared the team.
The babyâs heartbeat dropped.
Everyone moved faster.
Adam stayed beside Lily.
Minutes lost their meaning.
There was only her breathing.
Her hand.
The monitor.
The quiet instructions of the medical team.
Then a small sound filled the room.
Thin.
Fragile.
Alive.
Their son cried.
Adam lowered his head beside Lilyâs face.
âHeâs here.â
Tears slid into her hair.
Dr. Kim lifted the tiny baby briefly before the neonatal team moved him to a warming station.
âHe is breathing,â she said.
Adam looked across the room.
His sonâs hands moved beneath the light.
For the first time since returning home, Adam felt hope without suspicion.
A nurse wrapped the baby and placed him near Lily.
She touched his cheek.
âNoah,â she whispered.
They had chosen the name months ago.
Noah Carter opened his eyes.
The fire alarm stopped.
The doors unlocked.
Federal agents secured Ellis.
David checked the service corridor.
Adam remained beside Lily.
May you like
He did not notice the second nurse leave the operating room carrying a sealed medical transport case.
Inside the case was Noahâs blood sample.
