Chapter 1 - THE HEARTBEAT

Adam stood alone beneath the unforgiving hospital lights, staring at the double doors that had swallowed his wife.
The front of his white shirt was marked with Lilyâs blood.
His suitcase was still sitting somewhere inside their apartment.
His wet coat had been left in the ambulance.
None of that mattered.
The only thing that mattered was the silence behind those doors.
A nurse had told him the doctors were trying to stabilize Lily.
Another had promised that someone would update him soon.
Soon had already become twenty-three minutes.
Adam remained frozen beside the wall, replaying the moment he had entered the bedroom.
The backward nightgown.
The shattered photograph.
The dark medical bag.
The bruises around Lilyâs wrist.
His own hesitation.
That final memory cut deeper than everything else.
He had looked at his injured wife and wondered whether she had betrayed him.
He had allowed his motherâs poisonous voice to stand between him and the woman he loved.
For sixty seconds, he had done nothing.
Adam pressed his hands against his face.
He would never forgive himself for those sixty seconds.
The elevator doors opened at the end of the hallway.
Adam looked up sharply.
Evelyn Carter stepped out wearing a cream wool coat over an elegant midnight-blue dress.
Her silver-blonde hair was perfectly arranged.
A string of pearls rested at her throat.
She looked like a woman arriving for a charity luncheon rather than a mother whose pregnant daughter-in-law had been rushed into emergency care.
A hospital administrator walked beside her.
Adam recognized him as Martin Shaw, the vice president of clinical operations.
Evelyn had served on the hospitalâs charitable board for eleven years.
She knew everyone who mattered.
âAdam,â she said softly.
He moved away from the wall.
âWhat are you doing here?â
Evelyn stopped several feet from him.
Her eyes lowered briefly to the stains on his shirt.
A flicker crossed her face.
It was not horror.
It was calculation.
âYou told me Lily was in the hospital,â she said.
âI told you to stay away from her.â
âI am still your mother.â
âYou were inside my apartment.â
Martin Shaw glanced uneasily between them.
Evelynâs expression remained composed.
âPerhaps this is a private family conversation.â
âThere is nothing private about what happened to Lily.â
Adam stepped closer.
âYou brought Thomas Mercer into my home.â
Evelyn looked toward the nursesâ station.
âLower your voice.â
âYou said that on the phone.â
âAnd you ignored me then as well.â
âMy wife told me what you did.â
âYour wife is frightened, exhausted, and under the influence of powerful medication.â
âShe told me before the ambulance arrived.â
Evelynâs jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
Adam saw it.
For the first time in his life, he stopped looking at his mother as the woman who had raised him.
He looked at her as a suspect.
âWhat was in the black bag?â he asked.
Martin Shaw shifted his weight.
Evelyn turned her head toward him.
âMartin, give us a moment.â
The administrator hesitated.
Adam pointed toward the elevator.
âStay.â
Martinâs eyebrows rose.
Evelyn gave Adam a thin smile.
âYou do not issue orders in this hospital.â
âI own twenty-eight percent of the Carter Medical Trust that funds this building.â
âThose shares remain under family governance.â
âNot if a board member participated in an attack on a patient.â
Martinâs face changed.
Evelyn noticed.
âThis is an emotional misunderstanding,â she said.
Adam stared at her.
âMy pregnant wife was found injured in a locked bedroom.â
âThe bedroom was not locked.â
Adam went completely still.
He had never told Evelyn that.
Neither had the paramedics.
The police had not yet taken his statement.
Evelyn seemed to realize her mistake one second too late.
Adamâs voice dropped.
âHow do you know the door wasnât locked?â
Martin Shaw turned toward her.
Evelyn adjusted the cuff of her coat.
âLily may have mentioned it.â
âWhen?â
âShe called me earlier.â
âShe told me you forced your way inside.â
âThat is not what happened.â
âThen tell me what happened.â
âI went there because I was concerned.â
âWhy did you bring Mercer?â
âBecause Lily had been displaying alarming behavior.â
âWhat behavior?â
âParanoia.â
Adam took another step forward.
âAbout you?â
âAbout everyone.â
âShe believed people were following her.â
âWere they?â
Evelynâs eyes hardened.
Before she could answer, the emergency doors opened.
A physician in dark green scrubs walked into the hallway.
She was in her early forties, with tired eyes and a surgical cap tied behind her head.
âMr. Carter?â
Adam turned immediately.
âYes.â
âIâm Dr. Rachel Kim.â
âHow is she?â
Dr. Kim removed her mask.
âYour wife is stable.â
The air left Adamâs lungs.
He gripped the back of a chair.
âAnd the baby?â
Dr. Kim paused.
The pause nearly destroyed him.
âWe detected a heartbeat.â
Adam closed his eyes.
His knees weakened.
He lowered himself into the chair because he no longer trusted his legs.
âIs he all right?â
âThe fetal heart rate has stabilized for now.â
âFor now?â
âLily experienced significant physical stress.â
Dr. Kim glanced toward Evelyn.
âShe also had traces of a sedative in her system.â
Adam looked up.
âWhat sedative?â
âWe are still waiting for a complete toxicology report.â
âCould it hurt the baby?â
âThere are several factors we need to monitor.â
âWas she given something against her will?â
âI cannot determine that yet.â
Evelyn stepped forward.
âRachel, I believe it would be best if we discussed Lilyâs medical history privately.â
Dr. Kim looked at her.
âMrs. Carter, you are not listed as the patientâs emergency contact.â
âI am a member of this hospitalâs board.â
âYou are still not the patientâs emergency contact.â
Adam saw surprise pass across Evelynâs face.
It was quickly replaced by irritation.
Dr. Kim turned back to Adam.
âYour wife is asking for you.â
He stood immediately.
Evelyn reached for his arm.
âAdam, before you go in, you need to understand that she may say things that are not rational.â
He pulled away.
âDo not touch me.â
âThink carefully.â
âI should have thought carefully years ago.â
Her expression sharpened.
âWhat is that supposed to mean?â
âIt means I spent my entire life believing your version of every story.â
âI protected you.â
âFrom what?â
Evelynâs gaze held his.
âFrom people who would have used you.â
âPeople like my wife?â
âPeople like anyone who understood what your name was worth.â
Adam looked at Dr. Kim.
âTake me to Lily.â
Dr. Kim led him through the doors.
Behind him, Evelyn called his name once.
He did not turn around.
Lily lay in a private room near the end of the maternity wing.
A monitor displayed the rhythm of her heartbeat.
Another machine produced a softer, faster pattern.
Their babyâs heartbeat.
Adam stopped in the doorway.
The sound broke something open inside him.
He crossed the room and took Lilyâs hand.
Her skin was cool.
Her eyes opened slowly.
âYou came,â she whispered.
âIâm here.â
âIs he alive?â
âYes.â
Tears gathered in her eyes.
Adam leaned down and pressed his forehead against her hand.
âHeâs alive.â
Lily exhaled unevenly.
âYour mother?â
âSheâs outside.â
Fear moved across Lilyâs face.
âShe canât come in.â
âShe wonât.â
âYou donât understand.â
âI believe you.â
Lily stared at him.
He saw the question in her eyes.
Did he truly believe her now?
Adam swallowed.
âI should have believed you the moment I opened that door.â
âYou were shocked.â
âI stood there.â
âAdam.â
âI looked at you and wondered whether you had lied to me.â
Lilyâs eyes closed.
âI heard you come in.â
His chest tightened.
âYou were awake?â
âNot completely.â
âYou knew I was there?â
âI tried to say your name.â
Adam lowered his head.
âI am so sorry.â
Her fingers moved weakly against his palm.
âYour mother wanted that.â
âWhat?â
âShe wanted you to hesitate.â
Lily opened her eyes again.
âShe turned my nightgown around.â
Adamâs stomach turned.
âWhy?â
âShe said you would see it and think someone else had dressed me.â
He stared at her.
âThe photograph?â
âShe threw it.â
âThe blood?â
âMy hand.â
âShe staged the room.â
Lily nodded.
âShe kept saying you were already suspicious.â
Adam thought of the dinner three weeks earlier.
Evelyn had repeatedly questioned Lilyâs schedule.
She had mentioned Lilyâs former college boyfriend.
She had asked why Lily sometimes took calls on the balcony.
Adam had dismissed it as ordinary interference.
Now he understood.
Evelyn had been preparing him.
âShe planted the idea before tonight,â he said.
âYes.â
âWhy didnât you tell me?â
âI tried.â
âWhen?â
âLast Friday.â
Adam remembered the conversation.
Lily had asked whether he trusted her.
He had laughed and kissed her forehead.
He had told her pregnancy hormones were making her worry too much.
Shame moved through him again.
âShe knew exactly which doubts to create,â Lily said.
âWhat did she want Mercer to do?â
Lily turned her face toward the window.
Rain trailed down the glass.
âHe said he could make it look natural.â
Adam tightened his grip around her hand.
âNatural?â
âHe said no one would question it because I was already considered high-risk.â
âDid he touch you?â
âHe tried to give me an injection.â
Adamâs breathing changed.
âI knocked it away.â
âWhat happened to it?â
âIt fell near the dresser.â
âThe police will find it.â
Lily looked at him.
âNo, they wonât.â
âWhy?â
âThere was someone else in the apartment.â
Adam stared at her.
âYou said my mother brought the doctor.â
âShe did.â
âWho else was there?â
âI never saw his face.â
âWas it a man?â
âI think so.â
âWhat did he do?â
âHe stayed near the hallway.â
âSecurity?â
âMaybe.â
âDid he speak?â
âOnly once.â
âWhat did he say?â
Lily looked toward the closed hospital door.
âHe told your mother they had three minutes.â
Adam leaned closer.
âDid you recognize the voice?â
âNo.â
âAnything else?â
Lilyâs brow tightened as she searched the memory.
âHe reached into the bedroom after I fell.â
âFor the syringe?â
âI think so.â
âDid you see his hand?â
âYes.â
âWhat about it?â
âHe wore a ring.â
Adam waited.
Lilyâs voice became quieter.
âGold.â
âWhat kind of ring?â
âA square black stone with a bird carved into it.â
Adam released her hand.
The room seemed to tilt.
He knew that ring.
He had watched his father wear it every day of his childhood.
A gold signet ring with a black onyx face and the Carter family falcon carved into its center.
Jonathan Carter had been buried with it twelve years earlier.
Adamâs mouth went dry.
âThatâs impossible.â
âWhat is?â
âMy father owned that ring.â
Lily stared at him.
âCould your mother have kept it?â
âNo.â
âHow do you know?â
âI placed it on his hand before they closed the casket.â
The monitor continued its steady rhythm.
Adam looked through the window in the hospital door.
The hallway beyond it appeared empty.
Then a figure passed at the far end.
A tall man in a dark overcoat.
For one second, the man turned his head.
Adam saw a familiar profile.
Dr. Thomas Mercer.
Adam rushed into the hallway.
âMercer!â
The man stopped near the elevator.
Adam ran toward him.
The doors opened.
Mercer stepped inside.
Adam reached the elevator just as the doors began closing.
Mercer looked directly at him through the narrowing space.
His expression held no panic.
Only warning.
Then he lifted one hand.
May you like
On his finger was Jonathan Carterâs black signet ring.
The elevator doors closed.
