Chapter 7 - THE MIDNIGHT TRANSFER

Victor drove through the hospital exit barrier without slowing.
The wooden arm snapped against the roof and spun into the road.
Ortiz fastened her seat belt.
Adam leaned forward between the seats.
âDo not lose them.â
Victor glanced into the mirror.
âI have been following people since before you learned to drive.â
âThis is my wife.â
âAnd that is why you are not driving.â
The transport van moved two cars ahead.
Its emergency lights were off.
It blended into the evening traffic like an ordinary medical vehicle.
Ortiz called dispatch using a secured radio.
âUnlawful patient transfer in progress.â
She gave the license plate and direction.
The response came immediately.
âOrder shows judicial authorization.â
âThe order is based on fraudulent documents.â
âSupervisor review required.â
âWe do not have time.â
âStand by.â
Ortiz ended the transmission.
âThey will delay until she reaches the facility.â
âWhich facility?â Adam asked.
âThe order lists Northlake Behavioral Center.â
Victor shook his head.
âThey are not going to Northlake.â
âHow do you know?â
âThe van turned east.â
âWhat is east?â
âThe old Carter Womenâs Clinic.â
Adam had visited the clinic as a child during Foundation events.
It had closed five years earlier.
The building remained owned by a Carter subsidiary.
âWhy take her there?â
âPrivacy,â Victor said.
âAnd records they can control.â
The van turned through a yellow light.
Victor accelerated.
A delivery truck entered the intersection.
He swerved around it.
Ortiz braced one hand against the seat.
âTry not to kill us before we reach her.â
Victor ignored the comment.
Adam called Lilyâs phone.
It rang somewhere inside the van.
Mercer answered.
âAdam.â
âLet her go.â
âShe requires treatment.â
âYou are not her physician.â
âI have known your family longer than Rachel Kim has been practicing medicine.â
âYou entered my home with drugs.â
âI entered because your mother believed Lily was in danger.â
âYou planned her medical record before touching her.â
Mercer chuckled.
âYou found the tablet.â
âI found enough to put you away.â
âYou found what Victor wanted you to find.â
Adam looked at his uncle.
Victor kept his eyes on the road.
âWhat does that mean?â
âVictor has spent years waiting for an opportunity to control the trust.â
Mercerâs voice remained calm.
âHe needs Evelyn removed.â
âYou tried to harm my child.â
âYour child is the reason everyone is moving so quickly.â
âWhy?â
âYou still do not know.â
âI know about the trust.â
âYou know one part.â
âWhat is the other?â
Mercer lowered his voice.
âAsk Victor why Jonathan warned you not to trust him.â
The call ended.
Adam looked at Victor.
âWhat are you hiding?â
âA great deal.â
âDoes the trust transfer to you?â
âNo.â
âWho receives control?â
âI do not know.â
âMercer says you do.â
âMercer says whatever keeps people divided.â
âMy father warned me about you.â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
Victor turned hard onto an access road.
âBecause I helped Evelyn hide Grace.â
Adam stared at him.
âYou knew where she was.â
âI arranged the first transfer.â
âHow old were you?â
âTwenty.â
âYou helped them steal me.â
âI believed Grace was dangerous.â
âYou believed Evelyn.â
âI was her younger brother.â
âThat is not an excuse.â
âNo.â
Victorâs voice stayed flat.
âIt is an explanation.â
The van turned through the gates of the abandoned clinic.
Victor stopped a block away.
The building stood behind a line of leafless trees.
Most windows were dark.
A single light glowed near the rear entrance.
Ortiz checked her weapon.
âWe need backup.â
âBackup will notify Ellis,â Victor said.
âHe already knows where they are going.â
âThen we have minutes.â
Adam opened the door.
Ortiz grabbed his sleeve.
âYou stay behind me.â
âMy wife is inside.â
âThat does not make you bulletproof.â
âI am not waiting in the car.â
Victor removed a key card from the console.
âThere is an underground service tunnel from the adjacent pharmacy building.â
âHow do you know?â
âI approved the renovation.â
They crossed the alley.
Victor unlocked a steel door behind the empty pharmacy.
The tunnel smelled of damp concrete.
Emergency lights glowed along the floor.
Adam heard machinery ahead.
They reached a staircase beneath the clinic.
Ortiz moved first.
At the top, they entered a storage room filled with unused furniture.
Voices came from the hallway.
Mercer spoke to someone.
âShe needs another dose.â
A woman answered.
âThe fetal rate dropped after the last one.â
Adam recognized Margaret Sloan, Victorâs assistant.
Mercer sounded irritated.
âThe child only needs to remain viable until the transfer documents are completed.â
Adamâs body went cold.
Ortiz raised one hand, signaling him to wait.
Margaret continued.
âEvelyn said no visible complications.â
âEvelyn is not here.â
âShe is on her way.â
Victor whispered to Ortiz.
âThe procedure room is around the corner.â
Ortiz moved silently toward the doorway.
Adam followed despite her warning look.
Through the narrow opening, he saw Lily on a hospital bed.
Her restraints had been removed, but she appeared weak.
Mercer stood beside an IV pole.
Margaret held a clipboard.
Two private guards waited near the opposite wall.
Lilyâs eyes moved toward the storage room.
She saw Adam.
Her expression did not change.
She understood that reacting would expose him.
Adam loved her fiercely in that moment.
Mercer adjusted the IV line.
Ortiz stepped into the hallway.
âChicago Police.â
The guards reached inside their jackets.
âHands where I can see them.â
One guard froze.
The other drew a weapon.
Victor threw a metal cart into the hallway.
The weapon fired.
The sound exploded through the clinic.
Ortiz moved behind the wall and returned fire.
The guard dropped his weapon and fell against the floor.
The second guard raised both hands.
Adam ran to Lily.
Mercer grabbed a syringe.
âStay back.â
Adam stopped.
Mercer held the needle near Lilyâs IV port.
âOne step and I administer the entire dose.â
Lily looked at Adam.
Her breathing remained controlled.
âYou wonât,â Adam said.
Mercer smiled.
âYou still believe doctors are guided by conscience.â
âI believe you need the baby alive.â
Mercerâs smile faded slightly.
âYou heard too much.â
âWhat happens when he is born?â
âThe trust activates.â
âAnd?â
Mercer glanced toward Victor.
âYour uncle becomes very wealthy.â
Victor stood behind Ortiz.
âThat is a lie.â
âIs it?â
Mercer pressed the syringe closer to the port.
âJonathanâs trust names a protector.â
âWho?â Adam asked.
Mercer looked at him.
âThe oldest surviving child of Jonathan Carter.â
Adam frowned.
âI am his only child.â
Mercerâs eyes shifted toward Lily.
âNo.â
The distraction lasted less than a second.
Lily pulled the IV line from the port.
The syringe plunged into the empty tubing.
Adam crossed the room and struck Mercerâs arm away.
Ortiz rushed forward.
Mercer fell against the equipment cart.
Victor restrained him.
Margaret attempted to run.
David Kim appeared in the doorway with two federal courthouse officers.
He blocked her path.
âMy sister called,â he said.
Adam lifted Lily carefully.
âYou came.â
Her voice was weak.
âI promised.â
âAre we safe?â
âNot yet.â
Dr. Kim arrived with an emergency team.
She checked Lily and the baby.
The fetal monitor produced a rapid heartbeat.
âTake her back now,â Dr. Kim ordered.
Ortiz handcuffed Mercer.
He watched Adam with a strange expression.
âYou think this ends with me?â
âIt ends with you in prison.â
Mercer leaned closer as Ortiz pulled him away.
âAsk Evelyn why Jonathanâs oldest child is not listed in any family record.â
Adam stared after him.
Victorâs face had gone pale.
âYou know what he meant.â
Victor looked toward Lily.
âThis is not the place.â
âTell me.â
âJonathan had another child.â
âWith Grace?â
Victor did not answer.
âWhere is that child?â
âI donât know.â
Adam grabbed his arm.
âBoy or girl?â
âA girl.â
âWhat happened to her?â
âShe was born two years before you.â
âAnd?â
âEvelyn took her too.â
Adam released him.
âWhere did she go?â
Victor looked toward Detective Ortiz.
Adam followed his gaze.
Ortiz stood near the doorway, staring at both men.
Her face had become completely still.
âWhat?â Adam asked.
Ortiz reached beneath her blouse and pulled out a small chain.
A black onyx pendant hung from it.
May you like
The stone bore a carved falcon.
âMy mother said this was wrapped around me when I was abandoned,â she whispered.
