Chapter 14 - THE NURSE WHO REMEMBERED

Adam returned to Victorâs hospital room before sunrise.
The photograph lay inside his coat pocket.
Victor was awake.
He looked at Adamâs face and understood that the archive had been found.
âYou saw the files,â he said.
âYes.â
âAnd Mercer?â
âFederal custody.â
Victor nodded.
âThat is progress.â
Adam placed the photograph on the bed.
Victor looked at it.
His expression remained still.
âWhat is phase two?â Adam asked.
âI do not know.â
âMercer wrote that you approved it.â
âMercer wrote many lies.â
âYou met Judge Wren.â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âTo learn what Evelyn was preparing.â
âDid you know about the guardianship petition?â
âI learned about it during the meeting.â
âDid you approve my arrest?â
âNo.â
âDid you arrange for Ortizâs removal?â
âYes.â
âDid you know the trust names you temporary protector?â
Victor looked toward the door.
âYes.â
Adam felt anger spread through him.
âYou said you did not know who controlled the trust.â
âI said I did not know the permanent recipient.â
âYou knew you would control two billion dollars temporarily.â
âIf both parents were incapacitated.â
âYou watched Evelyn create exactly that situation.â
âI was trying to prevent it.â
âBy allowing Mercer into my home?â
Victorâs voice sharpened.
âI did not approve an attack on Lily.â
âWhat did you approve?â
âA confrontation.â
âWith a doctor carrying medication?â
âI believed Mercer intended to frighten her into surrendering the copied files.â
âYou believed what was convenient.â
âYes.â
Adam hated how easily Victor admitted guilt.
It made accusation feel useless.
âWhat was phase two?â
Victor closed his eyes.
âRemoving Evelyn.â
âHow?â
âBy forcing her into an act she could not explain.â
âYou used Lily as bait.â
âI believed she would be threatened, not physically harmed.â
âYou keep separating the threat from the harm.â
Victor looked at him.
âI was wrong.â
âYou were ambitious.â
âYes.â
âYou wanted the trust.â
âI wanted the ability to dismantle what Evelyn built.â
âYou wanted to be the man controlling the dismantling.â
âYes.â
Adam took the signet ring from his finger.
He placed it on the bedside table.
âYou do not deserve to see this on my hand.â
Victor looked at the ring.
âNo.â
âYou will testify.â
âYes.â
âYou will surrender every account, record, and private communication.â
âYes.â
âYou will resign from every Carter entity.â
âYes.â
âAnd you will never ask Lena, Grace, Lily, or me to forgive you.â
Victorâs voice became quiet.
âI understand.â
Adam turned toward the door.
âPhase two included one more person,â Victor said.
Adam stopped.
âWho?â
âAlice Ward.â
âThe nurse who tested my paternity.â
âYes.â
âWhere is she?â
âMercer found her two months ago.â
âIs she alive?â
âShe was when he found her.â
âWhere?â
âA town called Marlow, Wisconsin.â
âWhy does she matter now that the DNA test confirmed Jonathan?â
âShe witnessed Jonathanâs murder.â
Adam turned back.
âShe was at the dinner?â
âShe was working as his private nurse after a minor surgery.â
âWhy did she disappear?â
âMercer threatened her family.â
âDo you know the address?â
Victor wrote it on a hospital notepad.
âAdam.â
âWhat?â
âEvelyn knows about Alice.â
Adam folded the page.
âThen I leave now.â
Ortiz insisted on coming.
Grace wanted to go as well.
Dr. Kim refused to discharge her.
Lily remained in bed with the baby stable.
Adam gave her Anne Donovanâs recording.
He sat beside her while she listened.
When her motherâs voice said that Brennan wanted her, Lily covered her mouth.
Adam held her through the final minutes.
âMy whole life, I thought he chose silence because I did not matter,â she whispered.
âHe chose silence because he was afraid.â
âThat does not make it right.â
âNo.â
âBut it makes the truth different.â
Adam nodded.
âDo you want to meet Rebecca Brennan?â
âEventually.â
âWhat do you want now?â
âFor you to find Alice.â
Adam kissed her forehead.
Marlow was a small town near the Wisconsin border.
Alice Ward lived in a white farmhouse surrounded by bare apple trees.
No one answered the door.
Ortiz found fresh tire tracks beside the barn.
Adam looked through a kitchen window.
A kettle steamed on the stove.
The back door stood open.
They entered.
A chair had been knocked over.
A broken cup lay near the table.
Ortiz drew her weapon.
âAlice?â
A sound came from the cellar.
They found an elderly woman sitting on the bottom step.
Her hands were tied.
She had a bruise on her forehead but remained alert.
Ortiz cut the ropes.
âAre you Alice Ward?â
The woman looked at Adam.
âYou have Jonathanâs eyes.â
Adam knelt.
âWho did this?â
âA woman.â
âEvelyn?â
âNo.â
âWho?â
âClaire Donovan.â
Adam stared at her.
âClaire tied you?â
âShe came asking about Lily.â
âWhere is she now?â
âShe took my evidence.â
âWhat evidence?â
âA vial containing Jonathanâs blood.â
âWhy did you keep it?â
âBecause Mercer changed the death samples.â
âYou knew he poisoned Jonathan.â
âI saw him inject something into the whiskey bottle.â
âDid you tell the police?â
âThe police report was written before they interviewed me.â
âBy Lieutenant Ellisâs father.â
Alice nodded.
âClaire said she needed the vial to prove the murder.â
âWhy tie you?â
âShe said I would call Evelyn.â
âWould you?â
âNo.â
âThen why?â
Alice looked frightened.
âClaire is not working alone.â
âWith whom?â
âShe received a call.â
âDid you hear the voice?â
âA man.â
âWhat did he say?â
âHe told her phase two was complete.â
Adam and Ortiz exchanged a look.
âDid she use a name?â Ortiz asked.
âYes.â
âWhat name?â
âVictor.â
Adam closed his eyes.
Victor had confessed part of the truth while continuing to direct events.
Alice grabbed his sleeve.
âThere is something else.â
âWhat?â
âThe baby is not safe at the hospital.â
Adamâs chest tightened.
âWhy?â
âMercer trained another doctor.â
âWho?â
Alice swallowed.
âRachel Kim.â
Adam stood so quickly that the chair behind him fell.
Ortiz reached for her phone.
There was no signal inside the farmhouse.
They ran outside.
Adam called Lily.
No answer.
He called again.
The call went directly to voicemail.
Then Dr. Kim answered Lilyâs phone.
Her voice sounded calm.
âAdam.â
âWhere is my wife?â
âShe is resting.â
âPut her on.â
âI cannot.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Lily went into labor twenty minutes ago.â
Adam stopped beside the car.
âShe is only thirty-two weeks.â
âI know.â
âIs the baby coming?â
âYes.â
May you like
Dr. Kim lowered her voice.
âAnd someone has locked the entire maternity floor from the outside.â
