Chapter 8 - The Early Return

By eight the next morning, New York knew Luca Ventresca had never gone to Zurich.
The story appeared first on a financial news site.
Then television stations repeated it.
By nine, reporters were asking why a billionaire had staged an international trip four days before his wedding.
By ten, photographs of police vehicles at the Ventresca estate were everywhere.
Luca gave them exactly one statement.
"My mother is safe."
"She left her residence voluntarily."
"A private family matter involving financial documents is being reviewed with counsel and law enforcement."
"The wedding schedule has not changed."
The final sentence became the headline.
THE WEDDING IS STILL ON.
Nora read it from Elena's bedroom and nearly threw the tablet across the room.
"He cannot be serious."
Elena sat beside the window eating toast.
"He is."
"Your future daughter-in-law withheld your medication, slapped you, tried to force you to sign forged documents, burned evidence, framed me for theft, and accused Luca of kidnapping you."
"That is an efficient summary."
"And he is still marrying her?"
Elena buttered the toast.
"No."
Nora stopped.
"Then why announce the wedding is still on?"
Elena looked at her over the rim of her tea cup.
"Because if you are trying to catch a rat in the pantry, you do not remove the cheese."
Nora stared at her.
"You sound disturbingly comfortable with this."
"I married Antonio Ventresca."
"Comfort was not the family specialty."
Nora sat down.
After the hospital evaluation, Elena had returned to the estate under a new security arrangement.
Marco controlled the staff entrances.
Warren Pike and the two guards who had assaulted Luis had been removed for police questioning.
Celeste remained in the east guest suite by her own choice after her attorney advised her not to leave while investigators were present.
Gabriel had gone to his Manhattan apartment.
Edmund Vale remained detained at Teterboro.
Everything looked more controlled.
Nora trusted the appearance even less than before.
"Is Luca here?" she asked.
"In his study."
"He came back last night?"
"At two in the morning."
"Did you see him?"
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
Elena smiled.
"He said I am never allowed to kidnap myself again."
Nora laughed despite herself.
"What did you say?"
"I asked whether that was an order or a request."
"And?"
"He said request."
"Good answer."
The bedroom door opened.
Luca entered.
Nora had not seen him since the cameras changed everything.
He wore a charcoal suit without a tie, and exhaustion showed beneath the control in his face.
His eyes went to Nora's cheek.
The mark from Celeste's slap had faded but remained visible.
"Marco told me."
Nora stood.
"He tells you everything eventually."
Elena looked between them.
"I suddenly need to inspect my roses."
"Mother."
"Do not mother me."
She rolled her chair toward the door.
Nora moved to help.
Elena waved her away.
"I survived your fiancee."
"I can survive a doorway."
Luca watched her leave.
Then he looked at Nora.
"I owe you more than one apology."
"You do."
He nodded as if he had expected that.
"I watched the sitting-room feed from Manhattan."
"I know."
"Marco told you."
"By accident."
"He is losing his touch."
Nora did not smile.
Luca's expression became serious.
"The moment Celeste withheld the medication, I sent Dr. Keller."
"The moment she hit your mother?"
"The camera did not show the strike."
"Only the result."
"Yes."
"And you stayed in Manhattan."
"Yes."
Nora folded her arms.
"Why?"
"Because I had spent eleven years wondering whether my father's death came from inside my family."
"Yesterday, for the first time, I saw evidence that it might have."
"So you needed Celeste to keep playing."
"Yes."
"Even if Elena paid the price."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"I believed I could control the risk."
"You couldn't."
"No."
The admission came without excuse.
Nora had prepared herself for arrogance.
It was harder to stay angry at accountability.
She managed.
"And now you want the wedding to continue."
"I want everyone involved to believe their plan can still work."
"Everyone involved?"
"Celeste is not the only one."
"Gabriel?"
"Maybe."
"Vale?"
"Definitely."
"Dr. Harlan?"
"We are looking for him."
"Celeste's father?"
"We do not know yet."
Nora looked toward the hall where Elena had disappeared.
"Your mother is bait again."
"No."
"The wedding is."
"There is a difference."
"Only if you keep Elena out of it."
"I will."
Nora held his gaze.
"Promise her, not me."
"I already did."
That mattered.
Luca stepped toward the window.
"I need you to leave the estate today."
Nora stared at him.
"What?"
"Publicly."
"Why?"
"Because Celeste believes you are the reason her plan began falling apart."
"If I fire you and escort you out, she will think she has won something."
Nora felt anger rise again.
"You want to fire me as theater."
"Yes."
"After she already framed me as a thief."
"We cleared the theft accusation with the police."
"The internet did not get that memo."
"It will."
"Eventually."
Luca turned.
"Nora, I am not asking you to disappear."
"I am asking you to work outside the house with Marco."
"Then say that."
"I cannot say it where Celeste might hear."
"You are saying it now."
"This room is clean."
Nora looked around.
"That sentence used to make me feel safe."
"It should not anymore."
At least he understood that.
"What would I be doing?"
"Helping Daniel reconstruct where the forged documents came from."
"Why me?"
"Because you remember people others do not notice."
"Paul Rainer was not Paul Rainer because you remembered serving Edmund Vale at a charity dinner."
"My mother hid evidence in a room every executive in my family forgot existed."
"The people running this conspiracy rely on the assumption that household staff are invisible."
Nora thought about Celeste's first words to her.
You have forgotten what you are.
"And if I say no?"
"Then you leave with full pay, a security detail, and whatever reference you want."
"No retaliation."
"No pressure."
"No threats."
She studied him.
"You do not sound like a mafia boss."
Luca's mouth moved slightly.
"The newspapers will be disappointed."
Before Nora could answer, the bedroom door opened again.
Celeste stood there.
No guard was visible behind her.
Nora went still.
Luca did not.
"You were told to remain in the east suite."
Celeste looked only at him.
Her face was pale and beautiful and carefully devastated.
"I needed to see you."
"You saw me."
"Luca, please."
Nora had never heard her use that voice before.
It was softer than fear and more calculated than grief.
Celeste stepped into the room.
"Everything has gotten out of control."
"That is one description."
"I made mistakes."
"With my mother's medication?"
"I was trying to get her to listen."
"By withholding a cardiac prescription."
Celeste flinched.
"I did not understand how serious it was."
"You understood enough to hold the pill case in your hand while she asked for it."
Celeste's eyes flicked to the corners of the room.
She knew now.
"You recorded me."
"I protected my mother."
"You spied on me."
"Those are not mutually exclusive."
Her composure cracked.
"You lied about leaving the country so you could watch me in secret."
"And what I watched justified the lie."
Celeste's eyes filled with tears.
Nora almost admired the speed.
"Do you know what Gabriel has been doing?" Celeste asked.
Luca's expression did not change.
"Tell me."
"He pressured me for months."
"He said the board would never accept me unless I helped fix the continuity problem."
"He told me your mother was blocking everything."
"Did he tell you to hit her?"
Celeste looked away.
"I lost my temper."
"Did he tell you to forge her signature?"
"I did not forge it."
"Who did?"
"Vale handled the paperwork."
"On whose instructions?"
Celeste hesitated.
"Gabriel's."
Luca watched her carefully.
"And Dr. Harlan?"
Fear crossed her face.
Real fear this time.
"I do not know where he is."
"But you know what he was supposed to do."
Celeste's eyes moved to Nora.
"She should not be here."
"She stays."
"Luca."
"She stays."
Celeste inhaled slowly.
"Harlan was supposed to examine you after the wedding."
"Why?"
"Gabriel said it was just paperwork."
"For what condition?"
"He said you had fainting spells."
"I do not."
"I know that now."
Nora almost spoke but stopped herself.
Celeste was lying.
The scorched schedule listed first dose and second dose.
She had known there would be symptoms to diagnose because someone planned to create them.
Luca apparently reached the same conclusion.
"What was in the toast?"
Celeste's face went blank.
"What toast?"
"Six ten."
Her pupils widened.
Nora saw it.
"First dose at six fifteen," Luca continued.
"Second dose at seven if needed."
Celeste took one step back.
"I do not know what you are talking about."
Luca moved closer.
"You burned the schedule."
"Not well enough."
Celeste's breath quickened.
Then something unexpected happened.
She looked at Nora.
"He is going to blame me for all of it."
"Who?" Nora asked.
"Gabriel."
"You just blamed him."
"Because he started it."
"That is not the same as saying you were innocent."
Celeste's tears disappeared.
"You think you understand these people because Elena likes you."
"You do not."
She pointed at Luca.
"He will use you until he has what he needs, then send you back to polishing silver."
Luca's face hardened.
Nora answered before he could.
"Maybe."
Celeste blinked.
"But he did not take medication from a sick woman and call it a lesson."
Celeste stared at her.
Then she smiled.
"Not yet."
Luca stepped between them.
"Go back to the east suite."
Celeste looked at him for a long time.
"Are you still marrying me?"
Nora held her breath.
Luca's answer came without hesitation.
"The ceremony remains scheduled."
Hope and suspicion collided on Celeste's face.
"Why?"
"Because canceling it now tells everyone there is no reason to keep moving."
"Maybe I am not everyone."
"Then prove it."
"How?"
"Tell me where Harlan is."
Celeste looked down.
"I cannot."
"Cannot or will not?"
"Cannot."
She turned toward the door.
Before leaving, she looked back at Nora.
"When he fires you later, remember I warned you."
Two guards appeared in the hall and escorted her away.
Nora looked at Luca.
"You really are going to fire me publicly, aren't you?"
"In twenty minutes."
"Wonderful."
"Make it convincing."
Nora's eyes narrowed.
"I can do convincing."
At eleven thirty, the entire senior household staff was assembled in the main hall.
Celeste watched from the balcony above.
Gabriel had returned and stood beside her.
Reporters could not enter the estate, but several long lenses were visible beyond the gates.
Luca stood at the foot of the staircase.
Nora faced him in her black uniform.
"Ms. Hayes," Luca said coldly, "your involvement in private family matters has become unacceptable."
Nora stared at him.
"Your private family matter slapped your mother."
A murmur ran through the staff.
Celeste leaned forward.
Luca's expression remained stone.
"You are dismissed effective immediately."
Nora let anger fill her face because none of it was fake.
"Fine."
"Nora," Elena called from the upper corridor.
Nora did not look up.
"I hope your cameras keep you company," she said to Luca.
That line was not planned.
His eyes changed for half a second.
Good.
She wanted it to hurt a little.
Nora turned and walked out through the front doors carrying one suitcase.
Photographers captured every step.
By noon, the headline changed again.
HOUSEKEEPER AT CENTER OF VENTRESCA SCANDAL FIRED HOURS AFTER ELDERLY MATRIARCH FOUND SAFE.
Celeste read it from the east suite.
Then she called a number she believed Marco had not discovered.
"She's gone," she said.
The man on the other end answered.
"Good."
Celeste lowered her voice.
"Luca is still going through with the ceremony."
A pause.
"No, I don't trust him."
Another pause.
"But I can still get him to drink the champagne."
May you like
Outside the estate, Nora's sedan turned toward Manhattan.
She did not see the motorcycle that followed her from the gate.
