Chapter 10 - The Wedding Contract

Charles Beaumont did not look like a man who arranged poisonings.

He looked like a man who arranged museum wings.

At sixty-five, he was lean, silver-haired, and known for appearing in photographs beside hospital donors, university presidents, and sailing trophies.

His company controlled shipping terminals on three continents.

His foundation financed pediatric clinics.

His daughter's wedding had been described in magazines as a union of two American dynasties.

Nothing in his public life suggested he would meet a disgraced security supervisor in a private banking office three days before the ceremony.

That was exactly why Luca took the meeting seriously.

Marco's surveillance team photographed Warren entering Cormorant at 3:17 p.m.

Charles Beaumont arrived through a private garage at 3:24.

Warren left at 3:49 carrying no envelope.

Charles remained until 4:30.

At 4:41, twenty-five thousand dollars moved from a Beaumont advisory account to a consulting company Warren had incorporated six months earlier.

Daniel stared at the transaction record.

"That is either remarkably stupid or deliberately visible."

Nora looked at him.

"Can we prove the payment is connected to me?"

"No."

"Then maybe he does not care if we see it."

Luca paced the apartment.

"Or he wants me to see it."

"Why?"

"To push me toward Charles instead of Gabriel."

Marco crossed his arms.

"Or Gabriel wants you to think that."

Nora looked between them.

"This is exhausting."

Daniel nodded.

"Welcome to conspiracy law."

A knock came at the apartment door.

Marco checked the camera, then opened it.

A woman entered wearing a navy suit and carrying a black document case.

Nora recognized her from television.

Federal prosecutor Rachel Sloan had handled two organized-crime cases involving Ventresca competitors.

Her presence changed the room.

Luca did not look pleased.

"You brought a prosecutor."

Daniel shrugged.

"You brought a fake wedding."

Sloan set her case on the table.

"I am here unofficially."

"Then officially, you are not here."

"That is how unofficially works."

She looked at Nora.

"Ms. Hayes."

"I have seen your statement."

Nora frowned.

"Which one?"

"The one Luis Ortega recorded during the security interview."

Nora turned to Marco.

"I thought the memory card disappeared."

"Luis sent a partial audio copy to cloud storage automatically."

"We recovered more than he realized."

Sloan opened her case.

"The recovered file includes Celeste's voice in the hallway after the interview."

She played it.

Celeste spoke to Warren outside the door.

"The bracelet goes in the second drawer."

Warren replied, "What about the medicine?"

Celeste said, "Leave that to me."

The recording ended.

Nora closed her eyes.

"That would have been useful yesterday."

"It is useful now," Sloan said.

"Useful enough to arrest her?"

"For evidence tampering and false reporting, possibly."

"Then why is she still at the estate?"

Sloan looked at Luca.

"Because Mr. Ventresca asked us to wait."

Nora's head snapped toward him.

"You asked them not to arrest her?"

Luca's voice remained even.

"For thirty-six hours."

"You made that decision after what she did to Elena?"

"My mother agreed."

Nora looked at Elena's empty chair in her mind and felt anger return.

"Of course she did."

"All of you think pain becomes acceptable if it buys enough evidence."

Sloan studied her.

"For what it is worth, Ms. Hayes, I made the same objection."

Luca ignored that.

"What changed?"

Sloan removed a document.

"This."

It was not one of the continuity amendments.

It was a marital property agreement signed by Celeste three weeks earlier.

Luca stared at the first page.

"That is not my prenup."

"No."

Daniel took it.

"This purports to be a side letter to the prenup."

"It grants Celeste beneficial access to Ventresca Family Holdings upon marriage."

"My signature is not on it."

"A digital signature is."

Luca's eyes hardened.

"Forged."

Sloan nodded.

"We think so."

Nora looked at the certification page.

"Who prepared it?"

Sloan turned the page.

Edmund Vale's name appeared again.

Beneath it was a second attorney.

Daniel Russo.

Everyone looked at Daniel.

He went completely still.

"That is not my signature."

Sloan watched him.

"You understand why I had to come in person."

Daniel picked up the page.

"My bar number is correct."

"My office address is old by one floor."

"And I stopped using this signature block four years ago."

Luca said nothing.

Nora watched him.

Trust seemed to leave his face by degrees.

Daniel noticed.

"Luca."

"Where were you August eleventh?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"What?"

"The execution date."

"Where were you?"

Daniel thought.

"Chicago."

"Board mediation for Palmer Steel."

Sloan nodded.

"Travel records confirm it."

"The document was uploaded from a Ventresca legal server at 7:12 p.m. Eastern."

Daniel looked at Luca.

"Someone used my credentials."

"Who has them?"

"Nobody."

"That answer is becoming unpopular," Nora said.

Daniel ignored her.

"My hardware token stays with me."

"Was it with you in Chicago?"

"Yes."

Sloan placed another sheet on the table.

"Your token authenticated at 7:11 p.m."

Daniel stared at it.

"Impossible."

Marco leaned forward.

"Cloned token?"

"Not supposed to be possible."

"Neither are dead notaries."

Daniel looked genuinely shaken.

For the first time, Nora understood how deep the plan went.

It did not rely on one forged signature.

It relied on creating a complete legal environment in which every lie supported the next.

If challenged, the paperwork could point to real lawyers, real authorization systems, real doctors, and real board officers.

The conspiracy was designed not merely to steal power.

It was designed to make the theft look administrative.

Sloan turned to Luca.

"You still intend to proceed with the ceremony."

"Yes."

"Then I need you to understand something."

"If Celeste says yes at that altar and the marriage license is valid, even a forged side letter can create hours or days of confusion before a court freezes anything."

"Hours are enough to move money."

Daniel nodded.

"Or replace directors."

"Or trigger insurance."

Nora looked at the medical schedule.

"Or decide who is allowed near Luca after he collapses."

Sloan's eyes moved to her.

"Exactly."

"So do not let the marriage become legal," Nora said.

Luca looked at her.

"We need Celeste to believe it did."

Daniel suddenly sat straighter.

"The license."

Everyone looked at him.

"The ceremony can happen without the officiant filing the license."

Sloan shook her head.

"If the officiant signs and the couple signs, you are creating risk."

"Then use a ceremonial document."

"Not the legal one."

Luca considered it.

"Celeste will notice."

Nora shook her head.

"Not if the signing happens later."

"At the reception."

"She planned the champagne for six ten."

"She expects the legal trigger before the dose."

"Then give her a folder that looks like the license packet."

Daniel understood.

"And the real license never leaves my custody."

Sloan frowned.

"I dislike this plan."

Nora looked at her.

"Apparently that means the Ventrescas approve."

Sloan almost smiled.

Luca did not.

"What about Vale?"

Sloan's expression sharpened.

"He wants immunity."

"For what?"

"He claims he can identify who designed the incapacity plan."

"Charles?"

"He will not say without a deal."

"Gabriel?"

"Same answer."

Luca's voice became cold.

"No immunity for extortion."

"He is not asking you."

"He is asking my government."

"Exactly."

Daniel looked at the side letter again.

"If Vale is protecting the designer, why cooperate now?"

Sloan answered.

"Because he believes someone intends to make him the fall guy."

Nora remembered Celeste's panic when Elena vanished.

"Everybody is betraying everybody."

"That is usually when cases improve," Sloan said.

Marco's phone vibrated.

The team following Warren had lost him inside a subway station.

Nora frowned.

"He has spent years in private security."

"He knows surveillance."

Marco nodded.

"But he left something behind."

A courier envelope had been dropped in a trash bin before Warren entered the station.

Marco's agent recovered it.

Inside was a photocopy of the wedding reception floor plan.

Three locations were circled.

The champagne service station.

The medical suite.

The private elevator to Luca's hotel penthouse.

A handwritten note at the bottom read:

AFTER 7:15, NO VENTRESCA SECURITY ABOVE FLOOR 38.

Nora looked at Marco.

"They planned to remove your team."

"Yes."

"How?"

"The replacement after-party contractor would take over guest security at seven."

"We already canceled them."

Luca shook his head.

"Do not cancel."

Marco stared.

"You want hostile security inside the hotel?"

"I want them to think they are inside."

"Replace every member with our people using their uniforms."

Marco slowly nodded.

Nora looked at the floor plan.

The whole wedding had become a stage where almost every actor would be pretending to be someone else.

Celeste would think the doctors were hers.

Luca would think the doctors were his.

Federal agents would pose as catering staff.

Ventresca security would wear uniforms from a hostile contractor.

The legal wedding documents would be fake.

The collapse would be fake.

The only thing Nora could not identify was the one variable nobody controlled.

People.

People panicked.

People improvised.

People betrayed plans when fear entered the room.

"What happens if Celeste realizes the champagne switch?" Nora asked.

Luca answered.

"We have six backup scenarios."

"And if she uses something besides champagne?"

Marco said, "Everything Luca eats or drinks will be controlled."

"And if she does not wait until the reception?"

No one answered immediately.

That worried her.

The door buzzer sounded.

Marco checked the camera.

His expression changed.

"It is Elena."

Nora stood.

"Here?"

Marco opened the door.

Elena entered in her wheelchair with Sal Bellini behind her.

She looked furious.

"I hear my son is planning to fake a medical emergency at his own wedding."

Luca sighed.

"Mother."

"Do not mother me."

Nora had heard that before.

Elena rolled to the table and looked at the diagrams.

"If you are going to pretend to collapse, you need to know what Celeste expects the drug to do."

Sloan leaned forward.

"Do you know?"

Elena reached into her handbag.

She removed a small amber vial.

Every person in the room went still.

"Where did you get that?" Luca asked.

"From Celeste's dressing room."

"When?"

"Before I left the estate yesterday."

Marco looked horrified.

"You stole a vial while arranging your own extraction?"

Elena frowned.

"I prefer collected."

Sloan put on gloves and took the vial.

The label had been removed.

"This goes to the lab now."

Nora looked at Elena.

"Did Celeste see you take it?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

Elena's confidence flickered.

"I was."

Luca looked at the vial.

"If she notices it missing, the plan changes."

As if summoned by the sentence, Luca's secure phone rang.

The caller ID showed the estate.

He answered.

Celeste's voice came through, soft and cheerful.

"Luca, I think we should have dinner tonight."

Luca looked at the amber vial in Sloan's gloved hand.

"Just the two of us," Celeste added.

"I want to start over."

Nora felt a chill.

May you like

The wedding trap had been scheduled for two days from now.

Celeste had just moved the game forward.
