Chapter 15 - The Missing Bride

The convoy reached Rosebridge Recovery Residence at 11:08 p.m.
Federal vehicles took the front approach.
Marco's team covered the service road.
Luca arrived in a separate car despite Sloan's repeated instruction to stay away.
Nora was in the car behind him despite Luca's repeated instruction that she stay at the hotel.
Nobody commented on the pattern.
Rosebridge looked less like a clinic than a country house designed for people who did not want their illnesses photographed.
Stone walls rose behind old trees.
Warm lamps glowed beneath a slate roof.
No sign identified the property from the road.
The front doors were unlocked.
That was the first bad sign.
The lobby was empty.
That was the second.
The third was the smell of antiseptic mixed with burned plastic.
"Power room," Marco said.
One of his agents pointed toward the corridor.
A surveillance server had been deliberately overheated.
Its storage drives were blackened.
"They knew we were coming," Nora whispered.
Luca said nothing.
He moved faster.
Agents cleared treatment rooms one by one.
Empty.
Empty.
Empty.
Then a voice called from the east hall.
"We have someone."
Dr. Vincent Harlan was sitting on the floor of a locked patient room.
His hands were zip-tied in front of him.
Blood had dried along his hairline.
The bed beside him was empty.
Luca entered.
"Where is my mother?"
Harlan looked up.
"Gone."
Luca stepped closer.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Wrong answer."
Marco caught Luca's shoulder before he could move nearer.
"Let him talk."
Harlan swallowed.
"Charles came in ten minutes after they brought her here."
"He was furious."
"He said the hotel operation failed."
"He wanted me to sedate Mrs. Ventresca and sign a competency declaration."
Nora stared at him.
"Declaring her incompetent?"
"Yes."
"Did you?"
Harlan's face twisted.
"No."
Luca laughed once without humor.
"You were willing to falsify my diagnosis but found ethics for my mother?"
Harlan looked down.
"I was willing to make you appear temporarily impaired."
"I told myself it would be reversible."
"Charles never told me he intended to harm an elderly woman."
"That distinction will look excellent at sentencing," Sloan said as she entered.
Harlan flinched.
"I know."
"Where did Beaumont take Elena?"
"He did not tell me."
"Who went with him?"
"Two men and a nurse."
"Names?"
"I only knew one."
"Warren Pike."
Nora frowned.
"Warren was with us in the hotel basement."
Harlan looked confused.
"Then Charles lied to me."
"Describe him."
Harlan described a tall man with a shaved head and a scar along his jaw.
Marco recognized the description.
"Derek Shaw."
"Former Beaumont Maritime security."
"He was fired after a customs investigation."
Sloan wrote the name.
"Vehicle?"
"White ambulance."
"Plate?"
"I did not see it."
Luca looked at the empty bed.
The sheet still held a shallow impression where Elena had been.
On the bedside table sat her pearl earring.
Only one.
Nora picked it up.
"Elena would not leave this accidentally."
Luca looked at her.
"She wears that pair every day."
Nora examined the table.
A second object was wedged beneath the lamp.
A tiny dried orange blossom.
Sal Bellini entered behind them and stopped.
"That flower came from her handbag."
Nora turned.
"Why would she carry dried orange blossoms?"
Sal looked at Luca.
"Antonio's funeral."
"She kept six from the wreath."
Luca closed his eyes.
His mother's old code again.
Orange blossoms meant danger tied to Antonio's death.
Elena had left one deliberately.
Nora searched the floor.
Near the door, another small petal lay beneath a chair.
"She was making a trail."
Marco shook his head.
"A trail to a vehicle we do not have."
"Not exactly."
Nora held up the pearl earring.
"She left us a starting point."
Daniel arrived with a tablet.
"We have traffic footage."
A white ambulance left Rosebridge at 10:51 p.m.
It traveled south toward the Hutchinson River Parkway.
Cameras lost it near Mount Vernon.
"Where does Charles own property south of here?" Nora asked.
Daniel scrolled.
"Manhattan."
"A warehouse in the Bronx."
"Two port facilities in Brooklyn."
"A townhouse on East Seventy-Third."
"And a private pier in Red Hook through Beaumont Maritime."
Marco looked at Sal.
"What would Elena associate with orange blossoms besides Antonio?"
Sal thought.
"The old greenhouse."
Luca looked at him.
"The greenhouse is at the estate."
"Not that one."
"Antonio stored imported citrus trees at Pier Nine before he built the greenhouse."
"Beaumont Maritime owned the cold-storage building next door."
Daniel checked the map.
"Pier Nine is Red Hook."
Luca headed for the door.
Sloan blocked him.
"We do this correctly."
"My mother is in the hands of a man who helped cover up my father's death."
"Which is why you are emotionally compromised."
Luca stared at her.
Sloan did not move.
"You want Elena alive, not a heroic story about how you ignored a tactical perimeter."
Nora stepped between their argument.
"Send teams to the pier."
"Send others to the townhouse and Bronx warehouse."
"Charles knows we will search his properties."
"He may use one only long enough to transfer her."
Marco was already issuing orders.
Luca looked at Nora.
"You should not be here."
"We are past that."
His mouth tightened.
He did not argue.
At 11:31, Celeste Beaumont disappeared from federal supervision at the Grand Veridian Hotel.
She had not been under arrest.
Her attorney had negotiated a controlled interview pending formal charging decisions.
Two agents waited outside a conference room while she spoke privately with counsel.
When the attorney opened the inner restroom door, the room was empty.
A maintenance panel behind a decorative mirror had been removed.
The opening connected to a service shaft.
By the time hotel security locked the building, Celeste was gone.
Her attorney claimed to know nothing.
Nobody believed him.
Luca received the news while crossing the Brooklyn Bridge.
"Find her," he told Marco.
"Working it."
"Was Charles in contact?"
"Her phone stayed in the room."
"She may have a second one."
Nora remembered the number Celeste had used after Luca's staged firing.
"She does."
"The private phone."
Marco looked at her.
"We never recovered it."
"She hid it before the hotel interview."
Luca called Daniel.
"Pull every signal around the hotel tied to the secondary number."
Ten minutes later, they had one ping.
The phone turned on for nineteen seconds near Bryant Park.
A message went to a prepaid number.
The content was encrypted.
Then the phone went dark.
"Can we trace the prepaid?" Nora asked.
Marco shook his head.
"Not fast enough."
"Maybe we do not need to."
Luca looked at her.
"Celeste's father has Elena."
"Celeste just escaped."
"If she is running to Charles, she will lead us."
Marco frowned.
"We lost the signal."
Nora looked out at Manhattan approaching across the river.
"Then follow what she wants."
"What does she want?" Luca asked.
Nora answered quietly.
"To survive him."
At 12:06 a.m., federal agents entered the Red Hook pier facility.
They found one Beaumont van, fresh tire marks, and a room with medical equipment.
Elena was not there.
On the wall, someone had written a message in black marker.
LUCA - TOMORROW, 10 A.M.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT HER BACK.
Beneath it was a second line.
BRING THE ORIGINAL MARRIAGE LICENSE.
Luca stared at the words.
Daniel swore.
"Charles needs the legal marriage."
Nora felt a chill.
"Why?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Because the forged side letter only becomes useful if Celeste is actually his wife."
"Charles still thinks he can activate the whole structure."
Luca's phone rang from a blocked number.
He answered.
Celeste spoke before he could.
"Do not go to Red Hook tomorrow."
Luca looked at Nora.
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"My mother is missing."
"I know."
"Your father has her."
Celeste's voice broke.
"I know."
"Then help me."
A long silence followed.
"The message at the pier is a decoy," Celeste whispered.
"He is moving Elena before dawn."
"Where?"
"I don't know yet."
"Find out."
"I am trying."
"Why should I trust you?"
Celeste laughed bitterly.
"You shouldn't."
"But if my father gets that license, he will make sure neither of us gets a chance to explain anything."
The line disconnected.
Marco looked at Luca.
"Can we trace?"
"Already trying."
Nora stared at the marker on the wall.
Celeste had escaped federal supervision and was now warning Luca against her own father.
The bride had disappeared.
The mother was missing.
May you like
The groom had faked a collapse.
And the wedding was less than thirty-six hours away.
