Chapter 14 - The Mother They Tried to Silence

The second phase of the trap began at 10:02 p.m.
Daniel announced to the ballroom that Luca had suffered an unexplained medical episode and was being evaluated privately.
Guests were asked to remain calm.
The rehearsal dinner ended early.
Reporters outside received no details.
Within minutes, the rumor market created its own.
Heart attack.
Stroke.
Poisoning.
Drug overdose.
Assassination attempt.
By 10:15, financial desks in three countries were preparing stories about emergency succession at Ventresca Family Holdings.
That was exactly what Charles Beaumont had expected.
Celeste entered the hotel penthouse carrying the ceremonial license folder.
Two guards wearing the uniforms of the replacement after-party security contractor waved her through.
She did not know both men worked for Marco.
Gabriel arrived six minutes later.
He looked furious.
"Where is Luca?"
Celeste closed the penthouse door.
A hidden microphone captured everything.
"Medical suite."
"Is he conscious?"
"I don't know."
"Then why did you call me?"
"Because my father said the continuity plan is active."
Gabriel went still.
"Your father said what?"
Celeste stared at him.
"Don't pretend."
"You wanted this amendment too."
"I wanted governance protection."
"I did not want Luca poisoned."
Celeste's face changed.
"You knew there would be a medical event."
"I knew Charles claimed Luca had an undisclosed condition."
"You believed him?"
"I believed Luca had hidden health information before."
"That is not the same thing."
Gabriel stepped closer.
"What was in the glass?"
"I don't know."
"You told Charles he said it would make Luca dizzy."
Celeste looked around.
"How do you know what I told him?"
Gabriel froze.
He had revealed too much.
Celeste's eyes narrowed.
"You are listening to my calls."
Gabriel's face hardened.
"I have been listening to Charles for months."
"How?"
"Vale."
Celeste laughed once.
"Vale is betraying everyone."
"Yes."
"Including your father."
She stared at him.
"My father paid Warren today."
"I know."
"Why?"
Gabriel looked toward the windows.
"Because Warren has a ledger."
Nora, watching from the basement command room, held that ledger against her chest.
Marco looked at her.
"Useful timing."
The wet pages had been photographed immediately.
Federal technicians were drying the original sheet by sheet.
Celeste asked, "What ledger?"
Gabriel's voice dropped.
"Records going back to Antonio."
"Your father?"
"Luca's father."
"What do they show?"
Gabriel looked directly toward the hidden camera without seeing it.
"Things that can destroy both our families."
Celeste whispered, "Did you kill Antonio?"
Nora stopped breathing.
Gabriel's face changed.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he sat down.
"I changed a route."
Celeste stared.
"That is not an answer."
"Antonio was meeting investigators."
"He believed Charles and I had hidden beneficial ownership from him."
"Had you?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"Yes."
Nora felt Marco go still beside her.
Gabriel continued.
"Charles wanted Antonio frightened."
"A controlled collision."
"A warning."
Celeste's voice became barely audible.
"He died."
"The truck came too fast."
"The driver panicked."
"That was not the plan."
"But you covered it up."
"Yes."
"And my father paid for it."
Gabriel looked at her.
"Yes."
Nora whispered, "There it is."
Marco sent the timestamp to Sloan.
The confession was not complete, but it was more than anyone had possessed for eleven years.
In the penthouse, Celeste backed away from Gabriel.
"You let me marry into this."
He laughed bitterly.
"You were never marrying into anything."
"You were being placed."
"By whom?"
"Charles."
"Your father saw an opportunity when you met Luca."
"He encouraged the relationship from the beginning."
Celeste's eyes filled.
"That is a lie."
"Ask yourself why every accidental meeting happened near a Beaumont event."
"Ask yourself why Vale handled your legal introductions."
"Ask yourself why your father knew Luca's travel schedule before you did."
Celeste looked genuinely shattered.
For the first time, Nora almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Being used did not erase what Celeste had chosen to do once she understood she had power over Elena.
Gabriel stood.
"We need to stop this before Charles controls the narrative."
"How?"
"Find Luca."
"If he is conscious, we tell him everything."
"And if he isn't?"
Gabriel looked at the ceremonial folder.
"Then do not sign anything."
Celeste stared at him.
"You wanted me to sign yesterday."
"Yesterday I thought I understood the board."
"Tonight I know Charles has been playing both sides."
The penthouse door opened.
Dr. Elaine Mercer entered between two men in security uniforms.
She believed they were Charles's people.
They were not.
"Ms. Beaumont," Mercer said.
"We need your signature."
Gabriel stepped in front of Celeste.
"For what?"
Mercer held up a medical authorization.
"Transfer of Mr. Ventresca to a private treatment facility."
"Who ordered that?"
"Mr. Beaumont."
Gabriel laughed without humor.
"Of course he did."
Celeste took the form.
"I am not his wife yet."
Mercer pointed to the ceremonial folder.
"The marriage license was signed tonight."
"No, it wasn't," Gabriel said.
Celeste looked at him.
"What?"
"Daniel Russo never lets original license papers circulate before a ceremony."
"That folder is probably ceremonial."
Nora looked at Marco.
"He figured it out."
Marco nodded.
"Too late to help them much."
Mercer's face changed.
She reached for her phone.
One of the disguised guards took it.
"What are you doing?"
"Security procedure."
"Give that back."
Gabriel stepped away from her.
He understood before Celeste did.
"These are Luca's men."
Both guards removed the false contractor badges.
Mercer went pale.
The penthouse doors opened again.
Federal agents entered.
"Dr. Mercer, do not move."
Celeste stared at them.
"Where is Luca?"
No one answered.
Then Nora's radio crackled.
Another team was shouting from the estate.
Marco listened.
His face changed instantly.
"What happened?"
Nora asked.
"Elena."
"What about her?"
"She's gone again."
Nora stared at him.
"She did not arrange this one."
Marco shook his head.
"No."
At 9:54 p.m., while the hotel operation focused on Luca's staged collapse, a private ambulance had arrived at the estate with a transfer order bearing Dr. Keller's forged signature.
The temporary guards at the east service gate had verified the digital code.
The code was valid.
The ambulance team entered Elena's room and told her Luca had suffered a serious medical emergency.
They said he was asking for her.
Elena went willingly.
The vehicle left eight minutes later.
Dr. Keller had signed nothing.
The ambulance company did not exist.
Nora felt sick.
"Charles used Luca as bait."
Marco was already moving.
"He knew Elena would leave if she thought her son needed her."
Luca entered the command room wearing the same suit he had collapsed in.
"Where is my mother?"
Marco gave him the facts.
Luca's face lost all color.
Nora expected anger.
What she saw was fear.
"Track the ambulance."
"Plate is cloned."
"Traffic cameras?"
"Working it."
"Her phone?"
"Left at the estate."
Luca looked toward the live feed of Celeste and Gabriel under federal detention upstairs.
"Charles."
Sloan's voice came over the line.
"His car left the hotel during your medical transfer."
"We lost it near the FDR."
Luca grabbed his coat.
"He has my mother."
Daniel entered carrying the dried photographs from Warren's ledger.
"Maybe not for long."
He held up one page.
A recurring old payment address appeared beside Charles's initials.
It was a private medical property in Westchester owned through a Beaumont trust.
Nora read the name.
Rosebridge Recovery Residence.
Marco called his teams.
Luca headed for the door.
Sloan stopped him through the speaker.
"Do not go charging into that building."
Luca turned toward the microphone.
"Then get there before I do."
At Rosebridge, Elena woke in a dark room with no idea how long she had been unconscious.
Her wrists were not restrained.
The door was locked.
A heart monitor beeped beside the bed despite there being nothing wrong with her heart at that moment.
She sat up slowly.
A man stepped from the shadows.
Dr. Vincent Harlan looked exhausted.
"Mrs. Ventresca."
Elena stared at him.
"You have made a very poor career decision."
Harlan almost smiled.
"I know."
"Then open the door."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
His eyes moved toward a camera in the corner.
"Because Charles Beaumont is watching us."
Elena followed his gaze.
May you like
Then Harlan leaned closer and whispered something the camera could not hear.
"He is not planning to let either of us leave."
