Chapter 12 - The Rehearsal Dinner Trap

Edmund Vale's story began seventeen years earlier.
He told it in a federal interview room with two attorneys beside him and a camera above the door.
Luca watched remotely from the Chelsea apartment.
Nora sat beside Daniel.
Marco stood behind them.
Sloan had arranged a limited live feed because Vale's claims directly affected the planned wedding operation.
Vale looked older than he had at the Beaumont gala.
His gray beard was uneven now, and fear had stripped away the polished confidence Nora remembered.
"Charles Beaumont borrowed heavily in 2009," Vale said.
"His shipping company was collapsing."
"Antonio Ventresca provided private financing."
The prosecutor across from him asked, "Legal financing?"
Vale hesitated.
"Some of it."
Luca's expression remained unreadable.
Vale continued.
"The debt was secured by minority shares in Beaumont Maritime."
"Charles could not repay."
"Antonio could have taken control."
"He did not."
"Why?"
"Because Gabriel convinced him to restructure."
Luca leaned forward.
Vale wiped his hands on his trousers.
"The restructuring created reciprocal options."
"Beaumont received temporary interests in several Ventresca logistics subsidiaries."
"Antonio intended to unwind those interests after the market recovered."
"Did he?"
"No."
"Why not?"
Vale looked directly into the interview camera.
"He died."
Nora felt the room around her go still.
"What happened to the options?" the prosecutor asked.
"They were supposed to expire."
"But Charles kept renewing them through side agreements."
"Signed by whom?"
Vale closed his eyes.
"Gabriel."
Luca's hand tightened on the arm of his chair.
"Did Luca know?"
"No."
"Did Elena?"
"I don't know."
"How much of Ventresca Holdings do those instruments represent?"
Vale swallowed.
"If validated, between seven and eleven percent depending on the subsidiary."
Daniel whispered, "Enough to swing a contested board."
Nora understood.
Charles did not need to steal the whole empire.
He needed to prevent Luca from discovering that his family had secretly pledged pieces of it for years.
The prosecutor continued.
"Why the continuity amendment?"
Vale looked miserable.
"Because the old options would be exposed during Luca's post-marriage estate consolidation."
"His lawyers were planning a full beneficial-ownership review."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"We were."
Vale continued.
"Charles wanted a ninety-day window to restructure before the review."
"Gabriel wanted control because he feared Luca would remove him after discovering the old agreements."
"Celeste wanted security and status."
"Everyone wanted something different."
Nora felt cold.
"And Harlan?" the prosecutor asked.
Vale's eyes dropped.
"Charles introduced him."
"For what purpose?"
"To create a medical basis for temporary incapacity."
"Was the plan to poison Luca?"
Vale breathed in.
"I was told the substance would produce dizziness, confusion, and a brief loss of consciousness."
"Was it lethal?"
"I don't know."
"Did you care?"
Vale looked away.
The prosecutor let the silence answer.
"Who was supposed to administer it?"
"Celeste."
Nora looked at Luca.
He did not move.
"Did Celeste know exactly what it was?"
"She knew it would make him appear ill."
"Did Charles know?"
"Yes."
"Gabriel?"
Vale hesitated.
"Gabriel knew about the incapacity plan."
"I do not know whether he knew about the substance."
"What changed this week?"
Vale's fear returned.
"Elena refused to sign."
"Nora saw the document."
"Then Luca's fake Zurich trip started looking fake."
"Charles panicked."
"He told us to accelerate."
"That is why you attempted to leave?"
"Yes."
"Why tell us now?"
Vale stared at the table.
"Because Charles planned for the forged papers to lead to me and Gabriel if anything failed."
"He was going to make us disposable."
Luca leaned back.
Nora looked at him.
"Celeste was telling the truth about one thing."
"Charles was hiding part of the plan from her."
Daniel nodded.
"But she still knew about the dose."
"Yes."
No one in the room mistook partial ignorance for innocence.
Sloan called immediately after the interview segment ended.
"We can arrest Charles now."
Luca looked at the wall map.
"Will you?"
"Not yet."
Nora raised an eyebrow.
Sloan sighed through the speaker.
"I know how that sounds."
"We have enough for conspiracy and fraud, but we do not know where Harlan or Mercer are."
"If Charles gets arrested, they disappear."
Marco said, "The rehearsal dinner is tonight."
"They may use it as a test."
Sloan agreed.
"We think they will."
Nora looked at the plan.
"Then we go."
Luca shook his head.
"You do not."
"Why?"
"You are supposed to be fired and hiding."
"I can enter through service."
"No."
"This is the part where you become controlling again."
"This is the part where someone followed you on a motorcycle today."
"Marco lost him."
"Marco followed him to Warren."
"And Warren was paid by Charles."
"Which proves my point."
Nora folded her arms.
"I am the person who knows the service staff best."
"You need me in the control room."
Marco looked at Luca.
"She is right."
Luca gave him a look.
"Occupational betrayal," Marco said.
Daniel smiled.
"It is spreading."
Luca finally nodded.
"Control room only."
"No floor."
"Agreed."
"And if anything goes wrong, you leave."
Nora nodded.
She had no intention of defining wrong the same way he did.
The rehearsal dinner took place in the Grand Veridian Hotel ballroom, where the wedding reception would be held two nights later.
Three hundred guests attended.
The actual ceremony rehearsal had finished at the cathedral an hour earlier.
Now politicians, financiers, actors, judges, and distant relatives moved beneath chandeliers while a string quartet played near the terrace doors.
Celeste arrived on Charles Beaumont's arm.
Nora watched from a basement surveillance room.
Charles looked relaxed.
Too relaxed.
Gabriel arrived separately and ignored him.
That tension looked real.
Luca entered with Elena.
The room applauded.
Nora watched Elena smile as though no one had tried to seize control of her family forty-eight hours earlier.
"She is terrifying," Nora whispered.
Marco stood beside her.
"Yes."
"You say that like a compliment."
"It is."
The first hour passed without incident.
Every drink Luca received came from controlled service.
Every plate was prepared under observation.
Celeste remained near him but never touched his glass.
Charles circulated comfortably.
Gabriel drank mineral water and spoke to almost no one.
At 9:05, Dr. Elaine Mercer entered the ballroom.
Nora recognized her from the vendor file.
"Medical team just arrived."
Marco touched his earpiece.
"We have eyes."
Mercer wore a black dress rather than medical attire.
She looked like a guest.
Nora watched her speak briefly with Charles near the east bar.
Then she moved toward the corridor leading to the private medical suite.
A federal agent followed.
At 9:18, Warren Pike appeared on a service camera.
Nora sat forward.
"How did he get in?"
Marco looked at the access log.
"Borrowed florist credential."
"Stop him?"
"No."
"Track him."
Warren entered a storage room and met a catering captain named Victor Ames.
Ames had worked for Bellweather Catering for twelve years.
Nora knew him.
He had always been reliable.
Warren handed him a small packet.
Ames looked terrified.
"No," Nora whispered.
Marco zoomed in.
Ames shook his head.
Warren grabbed his collar and spoke close to his face.
The room had no audio.
Ames finally took the packet.
"He is being coerced," Nora said.
"Maybe."
"Look at him."
"Fear does not prove innocence."
Nora watched Ames tuck the packet into his jacket.
Then he returned to the ballroom.
"Where is he going?"
The camera followed him toward the champagne station.
Nora stood.
"Marco."
"I see it."
Ames slipped behind the bar.
He looked over both shoulders.
Then he emptied the packet into a single champagne flute marked with a tiny gold ribbon.
That ribbon identified Luca's glass for service.
Nora's pulse hammered.
"Take him now."
Marco did not move.
"We need the handoff."
"You have it on camera."
"We need to know who gives the final instruction."
Ames picked up the tray.
Nora stared at the gold-ribbon glass.
"Marco."
"Controlled."
"If that glass reaches Luca—"
"It won't."
An agent disguised as a server was positioned to switch the tray in the corridor.
Ames left the bar.
The camera followed.
He entered the service passage.
The disguised agent stepped out.
Then the lights went off.
Every monitor in the basement control room flickered black.
Nora's heart stopped.
Emergency lights came on six seconds later.
The feeds did not.
"What happened?"
Marco was already on the radio.
"Ballroom power event."
"Backup network not responding."
"Get eyes on Ventresca now."
Nora pulled off the headset.
"I'm going upstairs."
Marco caught her arm.
"No."
"The cameras are dead."
"My people are there."
His radio filled with overlapping voices.
One agent had lost sight of Ames.
Another reported the champagne tray was missing.
A third said Luca was still at the head table.
"Where is Celeste?" Marco demanded.
No answer.
Nora looked at him.
"You do not know where she is."
Marco released her.
"Stay behind me."
They ran.
The service stairs opened behind the ballroom kitchen.
The room was chaos.
Staff moved under emergency lighting while technicians shouted about a transformer fault.
Nora pushed through the pantry.
On the far side of the ballroom, guests were laughing nervously as power returned.
Music resumed.
Luca stood near Elena.
He was safe.
Nora exhaled.
Then she saw the gold-ribbon champagne flute in his hand.
Ames stood ten feet away, pale as death.
Celeste was beside Luca.
"To tomorrow," she said.
Luca raised the glass.
Nora did not think.
She ran.
"Luca!"
Hundreds of heads turned.
Celeste's face went white.
Luca looked at Nora.
The disguise was useless now.
The fired housekeeper had just sprinted into the rehearsal dinner wearing service black.
"Don't drink it!" Nora shouted.
Luca looked at the glass.
Then at Celeste.
Then he drank.
Nora stopped dead.
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then Luca's fingers opened.
The crystal shattered on the ballroom floor.
His knees buckled.
May you like
Elena screamed his name.
Luca collapsed in front of three hundred witnesses.
