Chapter 2 - The Man Who Never Left

The black sedan carrying Nora away from the main house never passed through the front gate.

Warren Pike told her she was being taken to the staff residence while the incident was reviewed.

Instead, the driver turned toward the old carriage buildings on the north side of the Ventresca property.

Nora noticed immediately.

"The staff residence is south."

Warren sat beside her in the rear seat.

"Security protocol."

"Whose protocol?"

"Mr. Ventresca's."

Nora looked out the window.

She had worked for Luca long enough to know one thing about his security procedures.

They were precise.

Nothing about this felt precise.

The sedan stopped beside a stone service building that had been converted into offices.

Warren opened the door.

"Inside."

Nora stayed seated.

"I want to call the house manager."

"You can call whoever you want after we document your statement."

"Then let me use my phone."

Warren held out his hand.

"Your phone is being secured as evidence."

Nora's pulse quickened.

"Evidence of what?"

"That depends on what we find."

She looked at the second guard in the front passenger seat.

It was Luis.

He avoided her eyes.

Nora understood the message.

Warren was not planning an ordinary staff interview.

She stepped out anyway because refusing would give him an excuse to use force.

Inside the building, Warren led her toward a windowless room with a metal table.

Nora stopped in the doorway.

"I am not going in there without someone else present."

Warren sighed.

"Ms. Hayes, you are making this harder than it needs to be."

"You are taking my phone, my keys, and putting me in a locked room because I gave an elderly woman her prescribed medication."

"I think it is already harder than it needs to be."

Luis looked down to hide a reaction.

Warren saw him.

"Ortega, wait outside."

Luis hesitated.

"Sir, policy says two personnel for employee interviews."

Warren's face tightened.

"I know the policy."

"Then I should stay."

For one second, Nora thought Warren might explode.

Instead, he smiled.

"Fine."

They entered together.

Nora sat nearest the door.

Warren placed her phone on the table but kept it out of reach.

"Start from the beginning."

Nora did.

She described the broken glass, Elena's cheek, the missing medication, and the continuity amendment.

She did not mention Elena's whispered instruction about the blue room.

That secret felt like the only thing Celeste did not know she possessed.

Warren listened without taking notes.

Luis wrote everything.

When Nora reached the forged date, Warren interrupted.

"You are not qualified to determine whether a corporate document is legitimate."

"I am qualified to know whether a woman was unconscious in a hospital on a certain date."

"Were you in the hospital room every minute?"

"No."

"Then you do not know what she signed."

Nora leaned back.

"You already decided what happened before I walked in here."

Warren's eyes chilled.

"Be careful with accusations."

"Celeste said security would find whatever she wanted in my room."

"Did she?"

"Yes."

"Convenient."

Luis stopped writing.

Nora turned toward him.

"You saw the pill case in Celeste's hand."

Luis swallowed.

Warren looked at him.

The room went silent.

Luis chose his words carefully.

"I saw Ms. Beaumont holding a silver case when we entered."

"Thank you," Nora said.

Warren's chair scraped the floor.

"Interview suspended."

He reached for Nora's phone.

Before his fingers touched it, someone knocked once and opened the door.

Dr. Samuel Keller walked in carrying his medical bag.

He was Elena's cardiologist and one of the few people on the estate who seemed completely unimpressed by security badges.

"Which one of you is having chest pain?" he asked.

Warren stood.

"Doctor, this is a restricted security interview."

"Then restrict it after you explain why Mrs. Ventresca's noon medication was delayed by fourteen minutes and why her blood pressure is currently one eighty-two over one ten."

Nora's fear sharpened.

"Is she all right?"

Dr. Keller looked at her.

"She will be if people stop treating her prescriptions like bargaining chips."

Warren's face changed.

"Who told you that?"

"A patient."

The doctor set his bag on the table.

"And before you ask, I have already documented the mark on her face."

Luis's pen moved again.

Warren noticed.

"Put that down."

Luis did not.

Dr. Keller picked up Nora's phone and slid it across the table to her.

"Ms. Hayes is needed at the main house."

Warren laughed once.

"On whose authority?"

The doctor pulled a folded sheet from his coat.

"Mine, as Mrs. Ventresca's physician."

"That does not override security."

"No, but this does."

A second man appeared behind him.

Marco D'Angelo wore no visible weapon and no expression at all.

Every guard on the property knew his face.

He had run Luca Ventresca's personal security for eleven years.

Warren went still.

"Mr. D'Angelo."

Marco stepped into the room.

"Dr. Keller asked for Nora."

"There is an active investigation."

"I know."

"Mr. Ventresca left me in charge of estate security while you were assigned to Zurich support."

Marco's eyes held his.

"Plans changed."

It was not an explanation.

Warren understood that he was not getting one.

He handed Nora's keys back.

"This is highly irregular."

Marco looked at the keys.

"So is confiscating an employee's phone without a signed incident order."

Warren's mouth tightened.

"I was protecting the family."

"Then you should be happy we are reviewing everything."

Marco turned to Nora.

"Come with us."

Outside, Nora finally exhaled.

"Is Luca back?"

Marco kept walking.

"Mr. Ventresca's travel schedule is private."

"Celeste said he is in Zurich."

"Ms. Beaumont says many things."

Nora stopped.

Marco turned.

"Elena told me something before they took me out," Nora said.

"I need to see her."

"You will."

"Now."

Marco studied her for a moment.

"What did she tell you?"

Nora thought about the camera she did not know existed.

She thought about Warren's questions.

She thought about the ease with which Celeste had transformed from aggressor to victim when the guards entered.

"I would rather tell Elena first."

Marco gave a small nod.

"That is probably wise."

At the Hudson River office, Luca watched Marco escort Nora out of the carriage building on a split-screen feed.

He had chosen the office because it belonged to a shell company that did not appear in any directory connected to the Ventresca name.

Only Marco, Luca's attorney Daniel Russo, and Luca himself knew he was there.

At least that was what he had believed that morning.

Now he was less certain about everyone.

On the central monitor, the sitting-room feed had gone quiet.

Celeste stood by the window with her phone to her ear.

Elena was gone, taken upstairs by Dr. Keller.

Luca increased the audio.

Celeste's voice was low.

"She saw the date."

A man's voice answered through the speaker, too faint for the camera microphone to capture clearly.

Celeste turned away from the fireplace.

"No, she didn't see the whole amendment."

A pause.

"Because I stopped her."

Another pause.

Celeste's posture stiffened.

"Do not speak to me like I am one of your employees."

Luca leaned closer.

Marco had installed directional microphones in only three rooms.

The sitting room was not one of them.

The hidden camera captured Celeste's side of the conversation, but not the caller's words.

"The wedding is in four days," Celeste continued.

"Nothing changes."

She listened.

"Then handle Nora."

Luca's expression did not move, but his right hand closed around a pen until his knuckles whitened.

Celeste lowered her voice.

"And tell your notary that if anyone asks about February seventeenth, Elena signed at home."

Luca pressed a button.

"Marco."

A secure line opened through Marco's earpiece.

"Go ahead."

"Nora does not leave your sight."

Marco did not ask why.

"Understood."

"Also, pull every notary used by Ventresca Family Holdings in the last twelve months."

"Already started."

"Focus on February seventeenth."

"I will have names in an hour."

Luca ended the call.

He rewound Celeste's conversation and watched it again.

His anger was not loud.

It had never been loud.

He had learned as a young man that rage announced your next move before you made it.

His father had been loud.

His father had also died at fifty-three after trusting the wrong people.

Luca preferred silence.

Three weeks earlier, Elena had made a strange complaint over breakfast.

She said papers were being moved in her study.

Luca asked which papers.

She said she did not know.

Two weeks earlier, she told him her medication seemed to disappear and reappear.

Again, he asked for specifics.

Again, she gave none.

Then, ten days earlier, she looked at Celeste across the dinner table and asked Luca whether he had changed the emergency voting rules for the family holding company.

Celeste laughed.

Luca had not.

That night, he ordered Marco to install discreet cameras in the common rooms used by his mother.

He also created the Zurich trip.

A real jet left Teterboro.

A real Ventresca executive boarded it.

Luca's luggage went with him.

Luca left the estate in the convoy, transferred beneath a covered service ramp, and returned to Manhattan in a different vehicle.

He had expected to catch Celeste snooping.

He had not expected to watch her withhold medication from his mother.

He had not expected to see a forged corporate amendment.

And he had not expected an internal authorization code.

The office door opened.

Daniel Russo entered carrying a laptop and a thin folder.

He was fifty-seven, silver-haired, meticulous, and had served as Ventresca counsel since Luca was twenty-four.

"I have the February board logs," Daniel said.

Luca turned.

"Who approved code G-seven-four-nine?"

Daniel stopped.

He did not need to ask what Luca meant.

His eyes dropped for half a second.

That was enough for Luca to notice.

"You recognize it."

Daniel set the folder down.

"The approval codes rotate."

"Not the first letter."

Daniel looked at him.

"G is Gabriel."

Luca already knew.

Hearing it still felt different.

Gabriel Ventresca was his father's younger brother.

He had taught Luca to drive.

He had stood beside Luca at his father's funeral.

He had been the person Elena trusted most after her son.

"Could someone clone his authorization?" Luca asked.

"Not easily."

"Could you?"

Daniel did not flinch.

"Yes."

"Could Celeste?"

"Not unless someone gave her access."

Luca looked back at the monitor.

Celeste had ended her call.

She now stood alone beside the portfolio, perfectly composed.

"Find out whether Gabriel is in New York," Luca said.

Daniel hesitated.

"He is."

Luca turned slowly.

"You checked already?"

Daniel placed both hands on the desk.

"He canceled his Milan meetings yesterday."

"Reason?"

"Family wedding."

Luca laughed without humor.

"Of course."

At the estate, Nora entered Elena's bedroom with Dr. Keller and Marco.

Elena was propped against pillows, oxygen tubing beneath her nose.

The mark on her cheek looked darker now.

Nora moved toward the bed.

"I'm sorry."

Elena frowned.

"For what?"

"I should have come in sooner."

"You came when everyone else was pretending not to see."

Marco stayed near the door.

Dr. Keller checked Elena's pulse and quietly left them with instructions to rest.

Nora lowered her voice.

"You said blue room."

Elena's eyes shifted toward Marco.

He noticed.

"I can step outside."

"No," Elena said.

"If Luca trusts you, stay."

Marco's face remained neutral.

Nora leaned closer.

"What is in the blue room?"

Elena looked toward the hall before answering.

"The second key opens my old writing cabinet."

"What cabinet?"

"The one Celeste thinks is empty."

"What is inside?"

Elena closed her eyes for a moment, gathering breath.

"Proof that the amendment she showed me is not the first one."

Nora felt the hairs rise on her arms.

"There are more?"

Elena opened her eyes.

"Three that I know of."

Marco stepped away from the door.

"Mrs. Ventresca, what do they change?"

Elena looked directly at him.

"Who controls everything if Luca cannot."

Nora's stomach tightened.

"Who?"

Elena's voice became a whisper.

"His wife."

The word hung in the room.

The wedding was four days away.

Then Elena reached beneath her blanket and pushed a small brass key into Nora's hand.

"Go before Celeste remembers the blue room exists."

Nora closed her fingers around it.

Across town, Luca's secure phone lit up with a message from an unknown number.

There were no words.

Only a photograph.

May you like

It showed Luca entering the supposedly secret Hudson River office that morning.

Someone already knew he had never gone to Zurich.
