Chapter 11 - The Second Signature

Luca agreed to dinner with Celeste for one reason.

She had changed the schedule.

People changed schedules when they were afraid, and fear often made hidden instructions visible.

The dinner was set for eight o'clock in the small glass conservatory at the estate.

Celeste requested no staff except one waiter.

Luca agreed to that too.

Then he replaced the waiter.

At seven forty-five, Nora sat in the service control room beneath the west wing wearing a headset and watching six camera feeds.

Officially, she was unemployed.

Unofficially, she had entered the estate through a laundry delivery tunnel that had not appeared on public plans since 1988.

"I cannot believe this house has a laundry tunnel," she whispered.

Marco's voice answered through the headset.

"It used to carry coal carts."

"That is somehow worse."

On the central screen, Luca entered the conservatory.

He wore a dark suit and no tie.

Celeste was already seated beneath hanging jasmine vines.

She had chosen a white dress.

Nora wondered whether that was deliberate too.

A replacement waiter named Evan Cole stood near the door.

He was actually a former Secret Service agent on Marco's team.

Every bottle, glass, plate, and utensil in the room had been inspected.

The kitchen staff had been changed without Celeste knowing.

Even the ice came from a sealed machine under guard.

"You look tired," Celeste said.

Luca sat across from her.

"Busy week."

"Because of me?"

"Partly."

Celeste lowered her eyes.

"I know you think I am a monster."

Nora muttered, "Strong opening."

Marco said nothing.

Luca's face on the monitor remained calm.

"What do you think you are?" he asked.

Celeste looked up.

"Scared."

"Of what?"

"Of losing you."

"That fear made you take my mother's medicine?"

Celeste inhaled slowly.

"Gabriel told me Elena would never accept me."

"He said if I could get her to sign the continuity amendment, she would finally understand I belonged in the family."

"And when she refused?"

"I got angry."

"You hit her."

Celeste's eyes filled.

"Once."

Nora felt her jaw clench.

The word once was doing more work than it deserved.

Luca did not react.

"You also framed Nora."

"Warren did that."

"At your direction."

"I wanted her gone."

"Why?"

Celeste's voice hardened.

"Because she was always around Elena."

"Because Elena trusted her."

"Because she looked at me like I was dirt every time I entered a room."

Nora stared at the monitor.

She had barely spoken to Celeste before that week.

Some people did not need open contempt to feel judged.

They supplied it themselves.

Luca leaned back.

"Where is Dr. Harlan?"

Celeste's face closed.

"I told you I do not know."

"Where is the vial?"

Nora stopped breathing.

Celeste had noticed.

Luca did not blink.

"What vial?"

Celeste smiled faintly.

"The one your mother stole from my dressing room."

Nora looked at Marco.

He cursed under his breath.

On-screen, Luca's tone remained flat.

"Why was there an unlabeled drug in your dressing room?"

"It was not a drug."

"What was it?"

"A cosmetic serum."

"Then you will not mind if a laboratory tests it."

Celeste's smile disappeared.

"You already have."

"Maybe."

"What did they find?"

"You tell me."

Celeste looked toward the waiter.

"Leave us."

Evan looked at Luca.

"Go," Luca said.

The agent exited.

He did not go far.

Nora could see him on the hall camera.

Celeste leaned forward.

"Gabriel said you were becoming unstable."

"He said you blacked out twice last year."

"False."

"I believed him."

"Did you believe him when he said a dose would make the lie look true?"

Her face changed.

There it was.

Not confession.

Recognition.

Luca saw it too.

"What dose?" Celeste whispered.

"You tell me."

She sat back.

"You are recording this."

"Would it matter if I were?"

"It matters to me."

"My mother's medication mattered to her."

Celeste's eyes hardened.

"You will never forgive me."

"That depends on what you think forgiveness means."

"Does it mean the wedding is canceled?"

"The ceremony remains scheduled."

She studied him.

"Why?"

"Because I want to know who shows up."

Celeste laughed softly.

"There he is."

"Who?"

"The man everybody warned me about."

"You never loved me."

Luca's expression did not change.

"Do not rewrite this into a romance tragedy."

"You chose to hurt my mother."

Celeste flinched as if he had struck her.

Then she reached for the wine.

"One glass," she said.

"For whatever we were before this."

Nora leaned toward the screen.

The bottle had been sealed under Marco's control.

Celeste poured into both glasses.

She lifted hers.

Luca lifted his.

"To honesty," Celeste said.

Nora almost laughed.

Their glasses touched.

Celeste drank.

Luca only wet his lips.

Nothing happened.

Celeste watched him for three seconds too long.

Then she smiled.

"You really do think I poisoned you."

Luca set the glass down.

"Did you?"

"Not tonight."

The words seemed to surprise even her.

Nora stared at the monitor.

Luca's face became colder.

"Not tonight?"

Celeste closed her eyes.

"That is not what I meant."

"What did you mean?"

"I meant I never poisoned you."

"Then what was the vial?"

She pushed back from the table.

"Dinner is over."

Luca did not stop her.

As she passed his chair, he said one sentence.

"Charles paid Warren today."

Celeste froze.

Nora saw the blood drain from her face.

She turned slowly.

"What?"

"Your father met Warren at Cormorant Bank."

"That is impossible."

"Twenty-five thousand dollars moved afterward."

Celeste looked genuinely frightened.

"My father told me Warren worked for Gabriel."

"He does."

"Then why would Charles pay him?"

"That is what I am asking you."

Celeste's eyes shifted toward the glass walls.

For the first time, she looked as if she expected someone outside them.

"Luca, you need to cancel the wedding."

Nora looked at Marco.

The request was not what either expected.

"Why?" Luca asked.

Celeste lowered her voice.

"Because I do not think the plan belongs to Gabriel anymore."

"Whose plan is it?"

"I don't know."

"That answer is running out of value."

Celeste gripped the back of the chair.

"My father told me the continuity amendment was insurance."

"He said Gabriel wanted it."

"Gabriel told me Charles wanted it."

"They both said Harlan was the other's doctor."

Luca watched her.

"And you never thought that was strange?"

"I thought they were using each other."

"They were."

"Maybe they still are."

She shook her head.

"No."

"Charles would never pay Warren without telling me unless he was hiding something from me."

"You have hidden plenty from him."

"Not like this."

Celeste moved toward Luca.

"Cancel the wedding."

"Tell me where Harlan is."

"I can't."

"Then we are done."

Luca stood.

Celeste caught his sleeve.

"There is one thing."

He looked at her hand until she released him.

"Harlan has a storage suite at Grand Central Medical Plaza."

"Under what name?"

"Mercer."

Nora's eyes widened.

Premier Concierge Health listed Dr. Elaine Mercer.

Luca understood immediately.

"Elaine Mercer?"

Celeste nodded.

"His sister."

"She is the reception doctor."

Celeste went pale.

"What?"

"You approved her company."

"I approved the vendor name."

"Charles's office handled the physician list."

Luca reached for his phone.

Celeste whispered, "Oh my God."

Nora was already moving.

"Marco, we need that storage suite."

"Federal warrant team is closer."

"Call Sloan."

Within twenty minutes, investigators entered a leased medical storage suite two blocks from Grand Central.

They found no Harlan.

They found no Elaine Mercer.

They found three locked cases of medications, unused IV kits, sealed syringes, and a portable cardiac monitor.

They also found a laptop.

The laptop contained draft medical reports declaring Luca temporarily incapacitated.

One report was dated the morning after the wedding.

Another was dated the same night.

A third was dated two days earlier.

Nora stared at the screen when Sloan transmitted the document.

"Two days earlier?"

Daniel read the metadata.

"Created six weeks ago."

"They had multiple timelines."

Marco pointed to the signature block.

Dr. Harlan's name appeared on one line.

Dr. Elaine Mercer's appeared on the second.

Under both was an attestation from Ventresca family counsel.

Again, Daniel Russo's name had been forged.

Daniel looked physically ill.

"Someone has been using my identity as legal glue."

Sloan's voice came over speaker.

"We found something else."

A photograph appeared.

It showed a hardware security token identical to Daniel's.

"Clone?" Marco asked.

"No."

Sloan zoomed in.

A tiny serial number was visible.

Daniel looked down at the token on his own keychain.

He read the numbers.

They matched.

Nora frowned.

"How can both be the same physical token?"

Daniel stared at the image.

"They cannot."

Luca looked at him.

"When was yours photographed?"

Daniel thought back.

Then his face changed.

"The engagement party."

"What happened?"

"I left my jacket in the library for twenty minutes."

"The token was in the inner pocket."

Marco said, "A photograph of the seed code could allow a sophisticated clone if they also had the server secret."

"Who has the server secret?"

Daniel answered.

"Our cybersecurity director."

"And the outside vendor."

Nora asked, "Which vendor?"

Daniel looked at Luca.

"Beaumont Digital Risk."

Celeste's father's company had been inside Ventresca legal systems for two years.

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Charles."

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

A voice from the Teterboro interview team spoke quickly.

Edmund Vale had just changed his mind about immunity.

He wanted to talk immediately.

His first sentence was already written in the agent's notes.
