Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper Thief

By six o'clock that evening, every employee on the estate had heard that Nora Hayes was a thief.
The story traveled with the speed of something people had been waiting to believe.
A diamond bracelet belonging to Celeste had supposedly vanished from her dressing room.
Two bottles of Elena's prescription medication were missing from the locked medical cabinet.
Five thousand dollars in cash was gone from a desk in the guest suite.
The accusations were almost impressive in their efficiency.
Nora heard them from a pantry maid who would not meet her eyes.
"They are searching staff rooms," the woman whispered.
"Warren says nobody leaves."
Nora looked toward the service corridor.
"Where is Celeste?"
"With Mr. Gabriel."
That stopped her.
"Gabriel is here?"
"He arrived twenty minutes ago."
Nora thanked her and turned away.
Marco had taken the documents from the blue room to Luca.
Before leaving, he had placed Nora under the protection of two guards he trusted.
He had also told her not to confront anyone.
Nora had agreed.
She had meant it at the time.
Then she saw Gabriel Ventresca walk into Elena's upstairs sitting room as if he owned the house.
He was sixty-two, elegant, silver at the temples, and still handsome enough to disarm people who wanted to dislike him.
Nora had always found him charming.
That memory now made her feel foolish.
He bent and kissed Elena's forehead.
"I came as soon as Celeste called."
Elena stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because she said you were upset."
"I am not upset."
"Your blood pressure says otherwise."
"My blood pressure has excellent reasons."
Gabriel smiled.
"Still sharp."
Elena's eyes narrowed.
"You should hope so."
Nora stayed beyond the partially open door.
Celeste stood near the fireplace, wearing a different dress and the face she used for photographers.
There was no sign of the woman from the sitting room.
Warren waited near the hall.
"Where is Luca?" Elena asked.
Gabriel sat across from her.
"Zurich."
"Are you sure?"
A tiny pause followed.
Nora caught it.
So did Elena.
Gabriel's smile did not change.
"Of course."
"Then call him."
"It is after midnight there."
"My son owns a telephone."
Celeste stepped forward.
"Elena, Luca has an important meeting in the morning."
Elena did not look at her.
"Then he can decide whether his mother matters more than a meeting."
Gabriel placed one hand on Elena's knee.
She immediately moved away from it.
His expression cooled.
"You are making this very difficult."
"For whom?"
"For everyone who loves you."
"That sentence has introduced more misery in this family than any threat ever has."
Nora nearly smiled.
Gabriel did not.
He leaned back.
"Celeste tells me you accused her of withholding your medication."
"She did."
"She says Nora moved the medication and then blamed her."
"Celeste lies."
"Nora is being investigated for theft."
Elena looked toward the door.
Nora instinctively stepped back.
Gabriel continued.
"A bracelet has been found in the staff wing."
Celeste lowered her eyes with perfect sadness.
"I did not want to believe it."
Elena's voice became hard.
"Where?"
"Nora's room," Warren said from the doorway.
Nora's stomach dropped.
She stepped into view.
"You planted it."
Warren turned.
Celeste looked almost pleased.
"There she is."
Gabriel stood slowly.
"Ms. Hayes, I think it would be better if you remained in the staff wing."
"I think it would be better if everyone stopped pretending this is normal."
"Nora," Elena warned.
Nora knew she was walking into the trap.
She also knew silence would allow them to build it around her.
"Celeste told me this afternoon that security would find whatever she wanted in my room."
Gabriel looked at Celeste.
She gave a small, wounded laugh.
"I never said that."
"Luis Ortega heard part of what happened."
Warren's face shifted.
Only slightly.
It was enough.
Gabriel noticed.
"Who is Luis Ortega?"
"A guard," Nora said.
"He was in the interview room when I made my statement."
Warren stepped forward.
"Ortega has already been removed from duty for violating procedure."
"Where is he?"
"Off property."
Nora's heartbeat quickened.
Marco had not mentioned Luis being removed.
"Who authorized that?"
Warren's jaw tightened.
"I did."
Nora took out her phone.
"Then I am calling Marco."
Warren moved faster than she expected.
He took the phone from her hand.
"You are not calling anyone."
Elena's voice cracked like a whip.
"Give it back."
Everyone turned.
She sat straighter in the wheelchair.
The oxygen tube was gone now, and the color had returned to her face.
"This is my house too," Elena said.
"Give Nora her phone."
Warren looked at Gabriel.
Gabriel sighed.
"Elena, please."
"Do not please me."
"You are unwell."
"I am old, Gabriel."
"There is a difference."
Celeste stepped close to Elena.
"No one is trying to upset you."
Elena looked up at her.
"Then you have failed accidentally with remarkable consistency."
Nora saw Gabriel's patience thinning.
He walked to the window.
"The wedding is four days away."
"Three and a half," Celeste corrected softly.
Gabriel ignored her.
"There are hundreds of guests arriving."
"There are reporters everywhere."
"The family cannot afford a scandal because a housekeeper misunderstood a private document."
Nora heard what he was really saying.
The problem was not what Celeste had done.
The problem was that Nora had seen it.
"I did not misunderstand the date," Nora said.
Gabriel turned.
The room became completely still.
Celeste's eyes flashed a warning.
Nora continued anyway.
"February seventeenth."
Gabriel's face did not move.
"What about it?"
"Elena was in the hospital."
"Many documents are signed electronically."
"Not notarized physical signatures."
Gabriel smiled thinly.
"You have been studying corporate law?"
"No."
"Then stop pretending you understand things above your position."
The words landed exactly as he intended.
Nora felt the old humiliation of being dismissed because of a uniform, an hourly wage, and a name nobody important recognized.
She let herself feel it for one second.
Then she looked directly at him.
"My position was close enough to the floor to read the date when the paper fell."
Elena covered a laugh with a cough.
Celeste's face reddened.
Gabriel stared at Nora long enough to make the room uncomfortable.
"Warren," he said.
"Escort Ms. Hayes to the staff wing."
"No," Elena said.
Gabriel did not look at her.
"Now."
Warren grabbed Nora's arm.
Before Nora could pull away, another voice came from the hall.
"Take your hand off her."
Luis Ortega stood in the doorway.
His uniform jacket was gone.
A bruise darkened the side of his mouth.
Warren released Nora.
"You are trespassing."
Luis stepped into the room.
"I never left the property."
"You were ordered off."
"You ordered two men to take me out through the north gate."
"They forgot the cameras in the vehicle record every trip."
Warren's face drained.
Luis held up a small body camera.
"And they forgot I was still wearing this."
Celeste's eyes moved to Gabriel.
Nora saw it.
So did Luis.
"What happened?" Nora asked.
Luis looked at her.
"They drove me to the old maintenance lot."
"Warren told them to convince me that I had seen Celeste holding a jewelry case, not a pill case."
Elena inhaled sharply.
Warren took one step toward Luis.
"You are lying."
Luis backed away.
"Stay where you are."
Gabriel raised both hands.
"Enough."
His voice remained calm, but a vein had appeared at his temple.
"This can all be sorted out."
Luis looked at him.
"I already sent the recording to Mr. D'Angelo."
Warren's face changed.
That was the first time Nora saw real fear in him.
Celeste recovered first.
"This is absurd."
"A disgruntled guard and a housekeeper are trying to create drama because they know Luca is away."
Luis looked at Elena's cheek.
"I know what I saw."
Celeste walked toward him.
"Do you?"
"Because I seem to remember you telling Warren during your interview that Nora had a silver case in her hand."
Nora frowned.
"I never said that."
Celeste did not look at her.
"Memory becomes unreliable under stress."
Luis's voice hardened.
"The body camera has audio from the moment I entered the sitting room."
Silence.
Celeste stopped.
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"Where is the camera footage now?"
Luis hesitated.
It was the wrong hesitation.
Nora knew it immediately.
So did Warren.
Warren lunged.
Luis stepped back, but Warren caught the front of his shirt and drove him into the doorframe.
Elena shouted.
Nora grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the table.
Celeste screamed for security.
Before Nora could swing, Marco appeared with three men behind him.
"Pike!"
Warren froze.
Marco's pistol remained holstered, but his right hand rested near it.
"Let him go."
Warren released Luis.
Marco looked around the room.
"Everyone stays where they are."
Gabriel's voice turned icy.
"You do not give orders to me in my family's house."
Marco met his gaze.
"Mr. Ventresca gave me authority over estate security."
"My nephew is in Switzerland."
"His authority travels well."
For the first time, Gabriel did not have an answer.
Marco's men took Warren aside.
Luis handed over the body camera.
Nora expected relief.
Instead, Marco's expression tightened when he checked the device.
"Where is the memory card?"
Luis blinked.
"Inside."
Marco opened the compartment.
It was empty.
Luis went pale.
"No."
"I checked it before I came upstairs."
Warren laughed.
It was a small sound.
Everyone heard it.
Marco turned toward him.
"Where is the card?"
"I have no idea."
Nora looked at Luis.
"You said you sent the recording."
"I sent a clip."
"How much?"
"Thirty seconds."
"Which thirty seconds?"
Luis's face fell.
"The maintenance lot."
The footage from the sitting room was gone.
Celeste's confidence returned one degree at a time.
"Then perhaps we can stop this performance."
Marco looked at her.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because the bracelet found in Nora's room still has a store inventory seal on the clasp."
Celeste's smile vanished.
Marco continued.
"It was purchased yesterday."
"It has never been listed on your insurance schedule."
"And the five thousand dollars supposedly missing from the guest suite came from a bank bundle issued this morning."
Gabriel looked at Warren.
Warren stared back.
Marco's voice became almost gentle.
"If you are going to frame someone, Mr. Pike, do not use cash that can be traced by serial range."
Nora felt breath return to her lungs.
It lasted less than a second.
A house phone rang on the side table.
Celeste answered before anyone else could.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
"What do you mean she is gone?"
Everyone turned toward Elena.
Celeste looked at the empty wheelchair beside the bed.
Then Nora realized the woman sitting near the window was not Elena at all.
In the confusion over Luis, Dr. Keller's nurse had taken Elena through the adjoining dressing room.
The private elevator beyond it stood open.
Marco ran to the doors.
The car was already descending.
His radio exploded with voices.
A black medical van had just left the underground garage.
No one on Marco's team had authorized it.
Nora stared at Gabriel.
He looked genuinely shocked.
Celeste looked frightened too.
That was when Nora understood something worse.

Whoever had taken Elena was not following the plan in this room.
There was another player they had not identified.
