Part 6: The Uninvited Guest

Brooke’s radiant smile faltered slightly as she reached the altar and noticed the heavy, suffocating silence hanging over the entire congregation.

Instead of the warm murmurs of admiration typical of a high-society wedding, the church felt like a courtroom waiting for a death sentence to be read.

She glanced sideways at Dominic, her brow furrowing in confusion.

“Dominic?” she whispered, her voice carrying clearly through the clip-on microphone pinned to his lapel.

“Why is everyone staring like that?”

Dominic couldn’t speak.

His throat was entirely dry, and his chest heaved as he fought to draw breath.

He looked out over the pews, his eyes locking once more onto me where I sat calmly in the third row, gently rocking my sleeping daughter.

Olivia stood up from the front pew, her face contorted with rage, and marched halfway down the aisle toward me.

“You have a lot of nerve showing your face here, Eleanor!” Olivia hissed, loud enough for the front half of the cathedral to hear.

“Guards! Remove this delusional woman and her bastard child immediately before I have you arrested for trespassing!”

The two private security guards stationed near the entrance blinked uncertainly, looking at Olivia and then looking at me.

They didn’t move an inch.

Before Olivia could demand their intervention again, I stood up slowly from my seat, adjusting my coat with calm deliberation.

The absolute silence in the cathedral was deafening.

“There’s no need for guards, Olivia,” I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the vaulted stone architecture without a single trace of hesitation.

“I’m not here to crash a wedding.

I’m simply delivering a belated wedding gift on behalf of the primary trustee of the Vance Group.”

Brooke’s father stood up from the front row, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson.

“What is the meaning of this outrage?” he demanded, looking back and forth between Dominic and me.

“Dominic, who is this woman, and why is she interrupting my daughter’s wedding?”

Dominic closed his eyes tightly for a split second, whispering a desperate prayer to a god he had ignored for years.

“Mr. Kensington… please… let’s just calm down,” Dominic stammered, his voice trembling uncontrollably.

“It’s just a misunderstanding—an angry ex-wife trying to cause a scene—”

“An angry ex-wife?” I interrupted, stepping out into the center aisle.

I unzipped my leather portfolio with deliberate slowness, sliding out the thick manila envelope sealed with red wax.

“Dominic, calling this a misunderstanding is terribly ungrateful, considering how much effort went into compiling these documents.”

I began walking slowly toward the altar, each step echoing against the marble floor like a countdown timer.

The entire congregation held its collective breath.

Brooke looked from Dominic to me, her manicured fingers gripping her white lily bouquet so tightly her knuckles turned white.

“Dominic, what is she talking about?” Brooke demanded, her voice rising in panic.

“What is in that envelope?”

I stopped just five feet away from the groom, looking up into his sweat-slicked face with a serene, terrifying smile.

“Open it and find out, husband,” I whispered softly.

“Or should I read the highlights aloud for your new in-laws?”
