Part 18: The Ghost on the Line

The voice on the other end of the phone line was calm, measured, and terrifyingly familiar, carrying the distinct cadence of a man who believed he held all the cards in the world.
“Jonathan,” I said steadily, my voice completely devoid of fear.
“I thought you went down with your yacht off the coast of Monaco ten years ago.”
A low, raspy chuckle echoed through the speaker.
“At-sea accidents are so theatrical, Eleanor,” Jonathan Vance replied smoothly.
“Let’s just say I found it much more profitable to manage my syndicates from the shadows while my nephew and my sister played their little roles on the public stage.”
Beside me, Leo was furiously typing on his tablet, tracking the IP routing of the incoming call through Sinclair & Black’s global cybersecurity network.
He caught my eye and held up a hand, mouthing: Tracing... hold him on the line.
“You’ve been watching all of this unfold, haven't you?” I asked calmly, keeping my tone level to buy Leo time.
“Every single second,” Jonathan answered, sounding almost amused.
“I watched Dominic throw those divorce papers in your face.
I watched Olivia try to fly away with three million dollars she didn't earn.
And I watched you systematically dismantle every single piece of their arrogant little world.”
“Then you know I have the master decryption keys to Apex Holdings and the entire syndicate,” I said, shifting my weight slightly as I looked down at Grace sleeping peacefully in her bassinet.
“You know that your entire corporate foundation is currently sitting inside my family trust.”
There was a brief pause on the line.
The ambient background noise of the call shifted—faint sounds of waves crashing against a private dock, mixed with the distant hum of a helicopter engine.
“I do know that, Eleanor,” Jonathan said, his voice dropping its playful tone and turning razor-sharp.
“And that is precisely why we need to make an arrangement.”
“An arrangement?” I raised an eyebrow, glancing at Leo, whose fingers flew across his tablet keyboard.
“What could you possibly offer me that I haven't already taken from your family?”
“Your father’s original patent archives,” Jonathan said smoothly.
“The ones your grandfather hid away before he passed away—the ones Dominic spent six years searching for without ever finding.
I have the physical hard copies.
And I am willing to trade them to you in exchange for one simple signature on a deed of transfer releasing Apex Holdings back to my oversight.”
Leo suddenly slammed his hand down softly on the desk, turning his tablet around so I could see the screen.
Trace complete, the display flashed.
Location: Private maritime estate, Lake Como, Italy.
I looked down at the screen, then back to the phone, a cold, fierce smile spreading slowly across my face.
“Jonathan,” I whispered into the receiver.
“You spent ten years hiding from federal marshals because you thought you were the smartest predator in the room.”
May you like
“And what is that supposed to mean?” he snapped, a hint of irritation piercing through his calm facade.
“It means,” I replied, my voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable power, “you just gave international law enforcement your exact GPS coordinates.”
