Part 12: The Courthouse Flashbulbs

The granite steps of the federal courthouse downtown were swallowed by a churning sea of reporters, camera crews, and flashing strobe lights.
Microphone booms crisscrossed the damp morning air as news anchors broadcasted live updates regarding the high-profile indictment of Dominic Vance.
Inside the courthouse briefing room, the U.S. Attorney stood behind a polished wooden podium flanked by federal investigators, stepping up to the microphone to deliver the official statement.
“This morning, a federal grand jury has returned a multi-count indictment against Dominic Vance, former CEO of the Vance Group,” the prosecutor announced, his voice echoing through the packed room and across national broadcast networks.
“Charges include corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, international securities manipulation, and systemic financial deception totaling over twelve million dollars in illicit transactions.”
Flashbulbs flared blindingly as reporters scrambled to type out live transcripts and shout follow-up questions from the gallery.
At that exact second, a synchronized press release was distributed digitally by Sinclair & Black to every major financial publication across the globe.
The headline flashed instantly on millions of computer screens in boardrooms across Wall Street, London, and Zurich: Vance Group Reverts to Primary Family Trust; Sole Managing Trustee Eleanor Vance Restores Complete Corporate Control.
I watched the broadcast unfold on the large television screen in my mother’s private study while holding Grace in my arms.
The television showed archival footage of Dominic stepping out of a police cruiser in handcuffs, his head bowed low to avoid the blinding camera flashes.
His expensive custom suits, his elite social club memberships, his penthouse views, and his arrogant swagger had all been reduced to a prison jumpsuit and a serial number.
My phone buzzed continuously on the coffee table with congratulatory messages from corporate partners, venture capitalists, and old friends who had watched my silent endurance over the past few difficult months.
I ignored them all, keeping my full attention focused on my daughter.
The doorbell of the estate chimed softly downstairs.
A few moments later, our housekeeper entered the study, holding a heavy, cream-colored envelope bearing no return address.
“This was left at the front security gate by a courier, Mrs. Vance,” the housekeeper said politely, placing the envelope on the desk before stepping out of the room.
I walked over, picked up the letter opener, and sliced open the thick paper flap.
Inside was a single handwritten note scrawled hastily on institutional yellow legal paper.

Recognizing the shaky, frantic handwriting immediately, my breath caught slightly in my throat.
It was a note from Dominic.
