Chapter 10 - The Appointment He Knew About

Khloe's next prenatal appointment was scheduled for nine the following morning.
Only three people outside the medical office knew the exact time.
Khloe.
Harrison.
And the driver assigned to take her.
Yet at 8:42 a.m., Richard was already sitting in the waiting room.
Khloe stopped just inside the glass doors.
Harrison's security officer immediately stepped between them.
Richard stood.
He carried a paper coffee cup and wore no tie.
He looked tired enough to appear human.
"Khloe."
She did not move.
"How did you know I was coming?"
Richard glanced toward the receptionist.
"I'm the father."
"That is not an answer."
"I called the office."
Harrison had anticipated that explanation.
Their attorney had already instructed the practice not to release appointment information to anyone without Khloe's written authorization.
The receptionist looked alarmed.
"Mrs. Harrington, we did not confirm your appointment to him."
Richard smiled faintly.
"I guessed."
Khloe stared at him.
"You guessed nine o'clock on a Thursday?"
"We were married six years."
"I know your routines."
The security officer asked Richard to leave.
He refused.
"I have a right to be involved in my daughter's care."
Khloe felt anger flare.
"You leaked my miscarriages to reporters."
The waiting room went silent.
Richard lowered his voice.
"I did not."
"You stole my records."
"I had copies because I attended appointments with you."
"Not for the last two years."
His jaw tightened.
Then a nurse opened the inner door.
Patricia Sloan.
Khloe recognized her immediately.
Patricia had taken her blood pressure at dozens of appointments.
She had held Khloe's hand after the second miscarriage.
She had once brought her tea when Richard failed to arrive for an ultrasound.
Now Khloe knew more than two hundred thousand dollars had flowed into a company in Patricia's name.
Patricia saw Harrison's investigator standing near the entrance.
Her face changed.
"Mrs. Harrington?"
Khloe looked at her.
"How long have you been giving my husband my medical information?"
Patricia froze.
Richard moved first.
"Khloe, stop."
She ignored him.
"How long?"
Patricia looked toward the other staff members.
"I don't know what you mean."
Harrison's investigator stepped forward.
"Ms. Sloan, we would like to speak with you and your counsel regarding payments from a Harrington-affiliated trust."
Patricia's face went white.
Richard turned toward the door.
The security officer blocked him from approaching Khloe but did not prevent him from leaving.
Before Richard walked out, he looked at Patricia.
The glance lasted less than a second.
It was enough.
Patricia began crying.
"I never gave him anything that could hurt the baby."
Khloe felt sick.
"You gave him information about me."
Patricia covered her face.
"He said it was for the divorce."
"He said he needed to know whether you were planning to leave the state."
"He said you were hiding things from him."
"And he paid you?"
"Not at first."
"My sister needed money."
"Miriam had legal bills."
Harrison's investigator exchanged a look with Khloe.
"Miriam Sloan?"
Patricia nodded.
"She refused to sign Richard's engineering reports."
"After that, Harrington Commercial threatened to sue her firm for millions."
"Leonard said he could make the lawsuit disappear if I helped with small things."
Khloe's pulse raced.
"Where is Miriam?"
Patricia looked terrified.
"Costa Rica."
"Is she safe?"
"I think so."
"You think?"
"I haven't spoken to her directly in seven months."
Harrison's investigator asked Patricia to stop speaking until law enforcement and counsel were present.
Khloe's doctor moved the appointment to a private examination room away from everyone else.
The baby was healthy.
Khloe was not.
Her blood pressure had climbed dangerously high.
The physician ordered additional monitoring and warned that continued stress could trigger complications.
"You need rest," the doctor said.
Khloe almost laughed.
"Can you prescribe a different husband?"
The doctor did not smile.
"I am serious."
"So am I."
Because of the blood pressure reading and intermittent abdominal tightening, Khloe was sent to the hospital for observation.
Harrison met her there.
He arrived with two phones, three legal folders, and the expression of a man trying not to show fear.
Khloe noticed immediately.
"The baby is okay."
"I know."
"The doctor said it is precautionary."
"I know."
"Then stop looking like you're about to cross-examine God."
Harrison sat beside the bed.
"I don't like hospitals."
Khloe knew why.
Their mother had died in one.
Their father had died in one.
Two of Khloe's pregnancies had ended in one.
She reached for his hand.
"Neither do I."
For an hour, they said nothing about the case.
Then Harrison's phone buzzed.
He read the message and stood.
"What?"
"Patricia gave a formal statement."
"And?"
"She admits providing Richard with appointment schedules, treatment summaries, and copies of selected records."
Khloe closed her eyes.
"For two years?"
"Twenty-one months."
"Before Vanessa."
"Around the same time."
"Before Richard planned the divorce."
"Maybe not."
Harrison showed her another detail.
Patricia said Leonard Pike first approached her after Miriam refused to approve altered concrete tests.
Leonard offered to make Harrington Commercial's threatened lawsuit against Miriam disappear.
In return, Patricia would provide information about Khloe.
The arrangement had seemed unrelated to engineering.
Now Harrison suspected it was not.
"Why would they care about my medical appointments because Miriam refused to falsify reports?"
"Maybe they did not care at first."
"Maybe Leonard discovered a vulnerable person and later used her for a different purpose."
"Or maybe Richard was already planning to neutralize your shareholder rights."
Khloe stared at him.
"By making me look unstable."
"Yes."
A nurse entered and adjusted the monitor.
The baby's heartbeat filled the room.
Strong.
Fast.
Alive.
Khloe listened until her breathing slowed.
Then someone knocked on the door.
Richard entered before the nurse could stop him.
Harrison stood so quickly the chair struck the wall.
"Get out."
Richard raised his hands.
"I came to see my wife."
"She does not want you here."
Richard looked at Khloe.
"Do you?"
Khloe stared at the man she had once begged to attend appointments.
Now, when she wanted him nowhere near her, he had found the hospital within an hour.
"Five minutes," she said.
Harrison looked at her.
"Khloe."
"Stay."
That was the condition.
Richard pulled a chair to the opposite side of the bed.
His eyes moved to the fetal monitor.
For a moment, genuine emotion crossed his face.
"Is she okay?"
"Yes."
"Are you?"
"Why are you here?"
Richard reached into his jacket.
Harrison stepped forward.
Richard slowly removed a document envelope.
"Because I want this to stop."
Khloe almost laughed.
"You started it."
"Maybe."
"Then stop it."
Richard placed the envelope on the table.
Inside was a settlement agreement.
The amount had increased.
Twenty-five million dollars.
The Lower Merion estate free of debt.
A separate trust for the baby.
Full restoration of Khloe's shares.
In exchange, she would withdraw every corporate records request, consent to confidential arbitration, and agree not to provide company information to law enforcement unless compelled by subpoena.
Khloe read the last clause again.
"You came into a hospital room to buy my silence."
"I came to protect our daughter from a public war."
"You used her medical records to build that war."
Richard's expression tightened.
"Leonard handled things I did not authorize."
Harrison spoke from the corner.
"That sentence is going to become very expensive for you."
Richard ignored him.
"Khloe, the company supports thousands of jobs."
"One reckless investigation can freeze financing and destroy projects that have nothing to do with our marriage."
"Did you change safety tests?"
"No."
"Did you order someone else to change them?"
Richard looked at Harrison.
"This is privileged settlement discussion."
Harrison's face remained expressionless.
"Not everything you say in a hospital becomes magic because you brought paper."
Richard returned his attention to Khloe.
"Sign it and walk away with more money than you could spend in three lifetimes."
Khloe looked at the fetal monitor.
Then at the agreement.
Then at her husband.
"No."
Richard's composure cracked.
"You don't even understand what you are refusing."
"I understand enough."
"Harrison is turning you into a weapon against me."
Khloe's voice became quiet.
"No, Richard."
"You did that when you forged my name."
Richard stood.
"You think your brother can protect you from everything?"
Harrison moved between them.
"Leave."
Richard looked past him at Khloe.
"Friday morning is your last chance."
The words struck her.
Friday.
The calendar entry from Vanessa's phone.
K.H. execution.
Khloe sat upright.
"What happens Friday morning?"
Richard realized too late that he had said too much.
"The hearing."
"What happens before the hearing?"
"Nothing."
"What signature page do you still need?"
Richard's eyes changed.
Harrison saw it.
"Get out now."
Security escorted Richard from the floor.
Khloe's heart rate alarm began beeping.
A nurse hurried inside.
Harrison stood beside the bed while the medical team calmed the contraction pattern.
For the next two hours, he refused to discuss Friday.
Then Naomi called.
She had found the answer.
The missing blue archival box contained the original shareholder agreement and stock certificate.
But under Pennsylvania corporate law and the company's old transfer restrictions, Richard's forged transfer had a vulnerability.
He still needed a spousal acknowledgment tied to a later recapitalization transaction.
Without that acknowledgment, the transfer could be challenged not only as a forgery but as procedurally incomplete.
A signature page existed in the closing binder.
It was blank.
Khloe stared at Harrison.
"He needs my real signature."
"Yes."
"Why would he think I would give it to him Friday?"
Harrison's face became grim.
"Because someone planned to put a document in front of you that you would sign without realizing what it was."
Khloe's stomach tightened.
"At the courthouse."
"Probably."
Then Harrison's phone rang.
It was the outside prosecutor.
Police had located Leonard Pike's Mercedes at Philadelphia International Airport.
Leonard was not on any passenger manifest.
But inside the trunk they found Miriam Sloan's passport.
May you like
And a hotel key card from a hotel less than three miles from Khloe's hospital.
